I work with beginners, Michael Aaron method and/or John Thompson.

About Stephen
Stephen made his operatic debut in the title role of Gluck's Orfeo in Santa Barbara, CA. Other roles performed in the United States have been Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the title role in John Eccles' The Judgement of Paris and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart. Among the roles sung in Europe were Orlolsky in Fledermaus, Bertarido in Rodelinda and Oberon in Sommernachtstraum. He has been a soloist in many Churches and Synagogues in the United States and Europe. Highlights have been Messiah, Elijah, St. Mathew Passion and Cantorial soloist for the Jewish High Holidays. He appeared in Summer Stock and played the guitar in a number of bands. Reviewers have cited Stephen's naturally full and warm timbre and his unforced agility.

Stephen has a strong interest and knowledge in vocal technique and maintains a s
tudio in Manhattan. He has given many workshops on vocal technique and had a large studio in Amsterdam, Holland, where lived for six years. He taught music at the International School of Amsterdam and has taught voice, piano and guitar privately for more than twenty years. My 10 year old son has no musical knowledge what-so-ever. We wanted him to have some basics, and he was curious about the guitar. Sadly our family isn't musical and it's hard to know where to start. We were lucky to have engaged Stephen. His calm, patient, encouraging approach has been the perfect complement to my son's temperament.

When I overhear snippets of exchanges during their lesson I am excited that my son is making connections and having a conversation about what he's learning. I can't support his instruction because of my complete inability to read sheet music—so I am particularly pleased that he seems to be making observations and taking small steps towards understanding something that confounds me.

My son looks forward to his time with teacher and (so far) is interested in practicing too. Of course we'd recommend Stephen!

Are you interested in studying piano for the first time, or are you looking for a new teacher? Regardless of age, I can help build a strong foundation for you, in terms of practice, technique, music theory (musicianship), and performance. For the very young student or for the adult beginner, piano lessons are an excellent source of structure, relaxation, creativity, fun, and discipline.

I use a variety of method books (Dozen a Day, Bastien, Faber, and others) that I have found to be very successful in building technique and theory skills alongside the study and development of repertoire for performance.

I encourage students to perform in front of others in recital opportunities, while at the same time, I honor each student's goals and needs. Whether you're playing for pleasure or starting your child on a musical journey to last a lifetime, I will be there to support you at every step!

About Nicole
Welcome! Thank you for visiting my page.

I am a professional opera singer and native New Yorker. I am so excited to reach out to new and continuing students in NYC - for both voice and piano study at all levels from age 5/6 and up.

I am an active performer and I love to share my passions and knowledge with my students. I have 13+ years of individual one-on-one voice and piano teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities.

What sets me apart from the other teachers here at TakeLessons?

I bring a special warmth, dedication, wisdom, and commitment to our work. Lessons are not solely about technique or making good sounds, but about communicating musically in a more meaningful way, and unleashing your unique gifts.

Primarily, I focus on classical/opera/musical theatre repertoire with my voice students. For stude
nts age 12-18, I emphasize a combination of folk songs, Disney, a limited selected pop music, and more. Ages 5-11 I use a combination of vocal method books for very young singers in addition to selected musical theatre and Disney songs.

My voice students have performed on and off Broadway, been nominated for NJ Paper Mill Playhouse's Rising Star Awards, have been accepted to pre-college musical theater programs on full scholarship, have earned multiple leading roles in high school musicals and plays, have performed major choral works at Carnegie Hall, have sung in church choirs and for weddings, and have released their own pop/rock albums.

I look forward to the pleasure of meeting and working with you!

Piano is a great first instrument for anyone interested in making music, no matter what your age or experience is. In the past 5 years of teaching, I have taught students from all sorts of musical backgrounds, ages 5-50! I have played piano almost my whole life and love sharing it with my students. I instill in them not only an understanding of technique and music theory, but also musicality and a love for many styles of music. For those new to reading music, I will help you with sight reading, scales, and the musical differences between styles. I use the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures curriculum for beginners, and have found it to be very effective in teaching students to read music for the first time. For those less new to reading music or at a more advanced level of piano, I am also able to use teach my students from a music theory perspective, by introducing concepts of tonality and the construction of harmony. I always encourage you to choose pieces that interest you, as well as ...

About Emily
Singing and playing piano have always been a huge part of my life. I love to perform everything from opera and sacred music to music theater and jazz, and have been performing since I was very young. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music in vocal performance from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. It was there that I fell in love with teaching, when I taught my first student as part of a course in vocal pedagogy. Since then I have built my studio to over 20 voice and piano students here in NY and CT. It has been thrilling to see all the progress they've made! I just completed my Masters of Music at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College.

I have had several excellent and truly inspiring teachers myself with different teaching styles, and so I have a variety of approaches to drawn upon in helping my own students. Vocal techni
que was not something that came easy for me, and was something I had to really work on. This work on technique has made me a stronger teacher. I know how many different approaches it can take to make something click, so I use the diverse experiences of my own studies to find what works best for each student. While I am classically trained, I am comfortable teaching all types of singers, because I believe that at its core, what makes a singer great is the same between all genres. My number one goal in teaching is to help my students use their voice in a way that is healthy and allows them the greatest ability for expression, because ultimately, I believe that is what music is about.

Although singing has been a big part of my professional work in the past few years, I have also been playing classical piano since I was four and still love to play and share this love with my students. Most of my students are piano students, and I love seeing the progress they've made over the years. Students that started with me as beginners a few years ago are now reading music with confidence and playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

I am an active performer and am able to draw upon this experience in my teaching. This summer I performed in Manhattan with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble and won 2nd prize in their dell'Arte/Jeiven Awards. Past roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Brooklyn College and Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Other roles include April in Company with Westport Community Theatre, Despina (cover) in Mozart's Così fan tutte for Connecticut Lyric Opera, the messenger in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at DePaul University, and Maria in West Side Story with the McLeod Summer Playhouse. I have a special love for early music and have performed oratorio by Bach with the DePaul Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Bethesda Music Series in New Haven. I also participated in the prestigious Amherst Early Music Festival for two years. I have performed abroad in Austria and Italy, and speak French, Italian, and some German. Because of my experience on stage in opera , music theatre, and recitals, I understand the skills it takes to engage an audience and create a well-rounded performance. I am thus an asset to any student preparing for a contest, audition, or stage appearance.

I am a 20 year musician with 11 years teaching experience. Born and raised in New York City, I attended Laguardia high school for music and art and afterward Queens College majoring in music. My main instruments are Clarinet, Drums, and Saxophone, but i also have a strong background in Piano, Trumpet, and Flute. I've taken private music lessons for the past 15 years with world class musicians, among them David Weber and Howard Hirsch. I've performed in every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall when i was only 11 years old. I performed alongside many famous musicians, including the late Tito Puente.

I usually use either the Alfred or Rubank method books to supplement a curriculum that I tailor make for each individual student. Any question or confusion a student has about anything during the lesson will be explained in detail and dealt with until he/she understands the concept. I've had many students pass all levels of the ABRSM and NYSSMA exams as well as receive academic scholarships for musical excellence.

My classes are very flexible when it comes to what the student wants. I can go from just teaching very basic bass playing to advanced harmonic concepts and jazz improvisation. On the first class, I give the student the choice of controlling our lessons materials about what they want to learn. Or the student can choose to let me control our classes, in which I will bring my own materials and ideas in which we should work and will go through the whole academic process of learning music.

About Marcelo
Established New York musician. Berklee College of Music Graduate. Have been teaching for many years and know that each student has their own mindset and we need to work around each person`s goals and interests. I teach mainly pop, rock, blues, jazz, classical, funk, RnB. All ages and levels are welcome.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are very relaxed and we will focus on ways to practice and getting the student to learn what he/she wants. Some people just want to come and learn a few tunes, some want to really learn the instrument and practice all the time. It all depends on the individual and I`m more than ready to adapt for each one of my students with the methods I have.
On our first class we will spend some time discussing what are the goals of the student and I will formulate a good plan so we can reach those goals in no time
.
I usually have 3 main paths that the student can choose.
1st - Learn the instrument enough so you can play your favorite songs and have fun with friends.
2nd(most requested) - Learn the instrument from scratch. Study technique, repertoire, a little of reading and music theory and learn how to improvise. This will allow the person to have their own tools to study on their own after attending classes with me.
3rd - Usually people who have been playing before like this one. We will go deep in music theory, ear training, reading, improvising and technique. Always leaning challenging tunes that will develop the student skills. This one allows the student to follow a professional path on the future, or maybe go into a music college.

*Location
Classes can take place at my studio or at your own location with an extra fee for transportation.

*Under 18 students
For children under 18 parents are more than welcome to stay for the classes, tell me if there is any specific goal you are looking for or talk about any subject that you might want.

*AUDITION PREP
I also help people to prepare for auditions. For this subject, I will tell you how to get ready for an audition. If you are trying to get in a college I have many contacts around the country and know how most auditions work and can help you with any question there might be. For auditions for orchestras or band we can work on repertoire and behavior to get you ready and all set to get accepted.

Experienced, patient teacher. NYS certified music educator. All levels, all styles. Will travel to your home.

About Jon
I am a patient, caring teacher with NYS certification in music education and many years of experience in private instruction and in the public schools. I teach piano and voice and individualize instruction for each student. You will learn basic technique, theory, and repertoire, and then you will focus on the music you want to learn. We'll work together to make the lessons fun and interesting. Teaching is a way for me to share my love of music. My goal is to see my students learn, progress, and perform on their own.

I teach all styles, ages, and ability levels, and specialize in popular, Broadway, jazz and rock. I am qualified to prepare you for NYSSMA, levels I - VI, and can also prepare you for high school, college, and theater auditions.

I'd like to give you an idea of what the lessons are like. For younger students, I use a co
mbination of method books and fun songs that your child will enjoy. With older students and adults, we can go in different directions, for example: rehearsing for school auditions, talent shows, concerts, and plays, performing original songs, using recorded accompaniment, playing duets, improvising solos, using electric keyboards and synthesizers, learning keyboard accompaniment for singer/songwriters, and more. And we don't forget the fundamentals.

No matter what your musical goal, we can achieve it together. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Will travel to your home. Ages 6 and up.

Want your child to start getting into music and piano? My approach is that music lessons need to be fun! We will play games, jump, dance, and sing. Through all that, the students will learn piano, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training.

About Dor
Dor is an Israeli-born vocalist based in Brooklyn, New York. She began her music education at the age of five when she studied classical piano. During those years she had experimented with saxophone and guitar but soon realized that her voice is her most powerful instrument.

In 2009, she started taking classical voice lessons and joined the “Moran Singers Ensemble” (Israel). With them, she performed many high profile national and international events, and eventually managed the ensemble during her last year there. In 2014 Dor joined the prestigious “Gary Bertini Israeli Choir”, directed by Ronen Borshevsky, where she participated in several co-productions with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by legendary Zubin Metta.

In 2015 Dor moved to New York to continue her academic studies at The New school for Jazz and Contempor
ary Music, after receiving a sizeable scholarship from the school itself.

In 2016 she formed a vocal jazz quartet, a collaboration with Israeli composer Rami Bar-David.

Dor is also the leader of 'SAGE', a progressive-rock band, playing her original music.

Yes that's right - her vocal techniques has actually helped me a ton when I was interviewing for new jobs to sound more confident and composed.
