Ukulele is the perfect instrument for young students learning their first instrument. It's incredibly easy to get off the ground and start making music right away. For that reason, it's one of my favorite instruments to teach, and it's the instrument I recommend to first-time music students, even if they eventually want to switch to other instruments.

About Ben

Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments

Thanks Ben!

Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

"Everyone should have and play a Uke. It's so simple to carry with you and it is one instrument you can't play and not laugh! It's so sweet and also very old--some are made of wood--some are made of armadillo's. I love them. The more the merrier. Everyone I know who is into the Uke is crackers. So get yourself a few and enjoy yourself."--George Harrison

I had a one off single lesson with Matthew, I was only in New York for a couple days and was lucky enough to get a sing writing session with him. He gave some great insight and valid techniques towards song writing. He was easy going and very friendly. Would certainly recommend.

Matt is an awesome instructor. Unlike a traditional guitar teacher, Matt understands what his students want to play, making lessons much more interesting and making practicing much easier. I've had a few lessons with Matt and have learned more in those lessons that I could have ever learned by myself. Highly recommend.

Just had my first piano lesson with Matthew today. He is a truly great artist and instructor who will teach you not just about the playing technique but about the music theory/history behind it. Would definitely recommend!

Ukulele students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?"

A beginning student will practice ...

"This review is in regards to Teresa teaching my 7-year-old daughter to play the ukulele, but I have to begin with my own journey as a musician. I’m a 53 year old jazz sax player who didn’t start playing until I was 33, so I never took music classes in school, meaning that most of my training and instruction came from private one-on-one lessons as opposed to group lessons. That being the case, I have had a lot of experience with music teachers, both first hand and through feedback from other music students that I’ve known, and I can tell you that great music teachers are few and far between, and I mean that sincerely. Living in Los Angeles, we’re surrounded by great players – some of the best players in the world call this city home – but just because a person is a great musician doesn’t mean they are also a great music teacher.

Being a great teacher means being able to distill the information that you have to share into a form that the student can understand and use, while at the same time keeping them motivated and excited about learning – and about practicing! It’s a rare gift and Teresa definitely has it!

About a year before meeting Teresa, my daughter tried piano for a few months, also with a private teacher. The results were ok, but her progress was slow, she wasn’t excited about it and practice was definitely a chore for her. But for the longest time she’s said that it’s her dream to one day become a rock star, so we thought maybe ukulele would be something good to try. We never really planned for her lessons to become a long-term commitment. We figured she’d learn a few chords, learn to play a couple of songs, and then kind of explore the instrument on her own to see if it ‘stuck’, thereby avoiding the ‘chore’ of having to practice on a regular schedule.

I also expected that I would have to go through several teachers before I found one that was even halfway decent. But we hit the lottery with Teresa! It was clear from the first lesson that she was a very special teacher (and person)! She’s one of those people that just glows – always positive, always in a great mood, and one of those people that it’s just a joy to be around.

She and my daughter hit it off right away. And that’s all great, but if she wasn’t a competent teacher, then ultimately it would be a waste of time and money in regards to our objective – teaching my daughter to become a musician. But Teresa is the most fantastic teacher! In addition to being able to inspire and motivate, she’s also shown the ability to translate complex info, like music theory, in such a way that a 7-year-old not only understands it, but is excited about it. She’s also been really great at being flexible in her study plan. Many of the music teachers that I’ve met, even the good ones, like to go from A to B to C, etc., following what they have determined is the best route for guiding the student on the journey to become a better musician. But sometimes you have to be able to deviate from that plan, to include additional material necessary to keep the student inspired. And again, Teresa is excellent at that! My daughter has brought several songs to her that she wanted to learn, and not only was Teresa open to teaching them to her, but she spent a considerable amount of her free time creating lead sheets for these songs so that my daughter could learn them!

I could go on singing her praises all day, but suffice it to say, my wife and I think the world of Teresa and are amazed and delighted at the progress my daughter is making with her (she’s already performed at one recital – singing and playing simultaneously, and she’ll probably be doing another one in the fall!). So if you’re looking for a music teacher, we can’t recommend her highly enough! (Note: though she teaches our daughter ukulele, I know that she teaches other instruments, as well. For sure piano, voice, drums and guitar, but I’ve seen a trumpet in her studio, so she may teach that as well!)"

"I've tried using on line videos and ukulele lesson books to learn to play the ukulele. But I couldn't seem to get past a certain level. I signed up for lessons with Athena and I understand a LOT more about the composition, and how to bring it all together in my playing. She's great at understanding my "why" questions, and is very patient as I learn each new thing. At the end of our lesson she gives me a practice plan so I know what to work on for the week to improve. It's made a big difference. I appreciate how quickly Athena understands what's confusing me about something new, and how quickly she explains it in a logical, clear way. I'm enjoying my lessons, and Athena has been encouraging at each step of the way. If you want to learn a new instrument, or improve your skill, Athena is a great instructor to work with!"

How to Sing and Play Ukulele in 4 Easy Steps

Learning to play an instrument is difficult enough, but what about trying to sing at the same time? It's really not as hard as it sounds! Here, teacher Willy M. takes you through the steps to play the ukulele while singing... It doesn’t matter what instrument I teach (piano, guitar, harmonica, drums, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, and voice), every student I ever have, with the exception of those playing harmonica, asks, “How do I sing and play my instrument at the same time?” The uk …

Kamaka Vs. Martin Ukulele: Pros & Cons for Uke Students

When you enter the market to buy yourself a new (or used) ukulele there are many factors to take into account: size of the uke, the type of woods used, the level of craftsmanship, and most importantly the price you’ll pay to get your hands on it. In doing your research, the most important thing to start off with is your price cap. Are you looking for the cheapest uke you can find, which would be anywhere from $20-40? Is it the next level up, around $100-200? Or is it the tier where the inst …

How to Improvise on a Fretted Instrument: a Step-by-Step Guide

Learning how to improvise is often seen as a more advanced skill attempted only after you have mastered the basics. It is often clouded in mystery and seems almost like magic when demonstrated through a great improviser. However, we can turn that idea on its head and use improvising as a path to learning how to play an instrument, even from the early stages. Humans are naturally improvisational (just think about how you like to move or even “drum” to songs you love), and we can use t …
