I've been teaching piano for over 20 years and I remain eager to share music with others, help them explore it for themselves and receive It's many benefits.
I try to find the best approach for each one of my students depending on their interests, and I usually incorporate various techniques, including reading, improvisation, memorization and analysis of music.I place emphasis on methods of practicing that yield the best results and best use of practice time.
I always feel that learning music should be a fun and rewarding experience and I strongly feel that the process of learning music is as important, if not more than the end result.

I'm a professional musician and teacher with over 20 years of experience.I feel that music is a beautiful thing in our world, magical at times and can be incredibly exciting, fun and rewarding.A universal language and a powerful tool, that can help us connect with ourselves and each other.
I always enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for music with students and help them discover what it can do for them.
I strongly feel that learning music at any level should be fun,and that the process of learning is most important and essentially the same as the end result.

In my lessons I strive towards a balance between discipline and creativity, and look for a holistic approach to learning.I explore sight-reading,ear-training, technique, memorization,as well as improvisation which I found to be a powerful learning tool and a fun way to experience music fr
om the beginning.I encourage classical music ,improvisation techniques as well as pieces that the student may have special connections to.I've learned that in general every one learns in his or her own unique way, and I see my job as a teacher to find the best approach for each of my students and guide him or her towards what they are naturally inclined to.

Piano lessons consist of technique, ear training, music reading, and music theory.
NYSSMA preparation is available.

About Bernadette
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My educational background is in teaching, and thus my focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

Incorporated in my system of guitar training work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB,
as well as fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

Within the first 2 months, beginning students will have learned the melodies and basic harmonies/chords to simple songs including "Jingle Bells", "Ode to Joy" and "Love me Tender".

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

*** Specialties ***
Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!

My 14 year old daughter loves music lessons from Ophelia. I can say this is the first time my daughter has ever expressed this much interest in music. I was glad I was able to find Ophelia through another friend of mine whose daughter also learns from Ophelia. Whenever Ophelia teaches a new piece of music, she goes over the composer's history with her, teaches the theory behind the piece, and does a ton of musicianship training. The lessons are truly worth their cost. It makes my daughter learn so much, just as if she was going to school. I've got to say, Ophelia is worth her price tag. Anywhere else with this kind of private music training would probably go for at least $100 per 45 minute or more.

Ophelia is truly wonderful for helping my daughter pick up piano again. She is 15 years old and there's a lot of distractions that kept her from practicing piano. Ophelia was able to help her find interest in it again. Her teaching style is truly unique. After my daughter took her lessons she gradually became a better and happier musician and not just play off the books. Ophelia teaches music theory, singing and more to really help benefit my daughter overall! I will definitely be recommending her to my daughter's classmates!

I am a 20 year musician with 11 years teaching experience. Born and raised in New York City, I attended Laguardia high school for music and art and afterward Queens College majoring in music. My main instruments are Clarinet, Drums, and Saxophone, but i also have a strong background in Piano, Trumpet, and Flute. I've taken private music lessons for the past 15 years with world class musicians, among them David Weber and Howard Hirsch. I've performed in every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall when i was only 11 years old. I performed alongside many famous musicians, including the late Tito Puente.

My teaching includes all aspects of music; Musical theory, sight singing, as well as Music History. My teaching style allows the child to have fun while they learn their instrument, but I emph
asize a strong practice regiment. Your child will understand that while learning music and an instrument can be fun, there will be some work involved if they want to become great. I usually use either the Alfred or Rubank method books to supplement a curriculum that I tailor make for each individual student. Any question or confusion a student has about anything during the lesson will be explained in detail and dealt with until he/she understands the concept. I've had many students pass all levels of the ABRSM and NYSSMA exams as well as receive academic scholarships for musical excellence.

As a former master's student at The Eastman School of Music and a lifelong musician, I've yet to encounter a voice teacher as perceptive, honest, patient, and encouraging as Mr. Tompkins. One of the best pedagogues and technicians I've encountered, his repertoire knowlege and ability to discern what is hindering a singer's progress is quite remarkable. Within an hour of working with him, he was able to fine tune and efficiently improve what was impeding my progress. That 60 minute session was more productive than in an entire semester at conservatory. A world class singer, Mr. Tompkins is as accomplished a voice teacher as he is a performer. Highly recommended.

I generally teach with a long-term focus in mind. Want to learn how to play that piece that seems impossible to you now? I can show you how to get there. I'm happiest when I get a chance to open the flood gates on all the knowledge I've accumulated about the pieces I love, and that's also when you'll be getting the most out of me as a teacher.

About Erik E.
Basically, I'm very good at what I do. If you want someone who's a fountain of information, who can give you hours of background and detail on a Chopin piece or the like, and knows what it takes to get to the point where you can pretty much play anything, I'm your guy. If you want someone to teach your daughter Mary Had A Little Lamb, I can do that too, and that's often where it all starts!

I've been teaching for 12 years and have had well over 150 different students in that time: Kids, retirees, beginner to advanced.

Hello! I have been playing and teaching piano, organ, and keyboards (all styles, levels and ages) for more than 40 years. I will teach in your home on your instrument and gained a degree in Jazz Piano from Birmingham Conservatoire in the UK. Teaching is my passion and my lessons cover all aspects of playing including basic keyboard layout, posture, fingering, ear training, improvisation, music theory and general musicianship. However, lessons and curriculum will be shaped to the individual needs of the student. I fully understand the different approach needed for children (could be a great future pianist) and adults, who in most cases are looking for a creative, fun and entertaining hobby. Yes, practice and study are essential but most important - learning must be fun! I am friendly, patience, trustworthy and reliable and look forward to helping you achieve your musical goals.

About Andrew
Andy has been involved in music his entire working life playing the piano, home keyboard and home organ (not classical style) for over 40 years. He and his wife recently moved from the UK where he studied piano, achieving a jazz piano performance degree. He went on to work in the music industry for many years. This included working for a number of music education organizations producing materials for the Technics Music Academy and Yamaha Music School systems, training teachers for these systems, many piano / keyboard performances across the UK and Europe plus over 30 visits to Japan to work on instrument design for Yamaha and Casio. However, he continued to teach piano / keyboard on a private basis through all these activities. Teaching is his passion and he is a friendly, positive and reliable person who has assisted many students o
f all ages and all levels to improve their musical skills. He can teach all styles of music but has an expertise for Jazz (improvisation, jazz scales, chord structures, etc) Blues, American Song Book and artists such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Sting etc. He will come to your home and teach on your instrument which is very important. He will shape the tuition process to the individual needs of the student and looks forward to meeting and helping with you reach your musical goals.
