She is warm, professional and very adept at finding your child's musical strengths and then identifying material to help them access and enjoy the music and instrument. Mandolin is a delightful instrument to study and is a great addition if you are already a guitarist or a singer looking to accompany themselves in unique ways. As with my guitar lessons, I design a student's curriculum to fit each individual's needs and desires. I can teach reading and music theory, but also get you strumming along to your favorite songs or learning how to flatpick basic bluegrass tunes. My goal with any instrumental lessons is to get a student to think for themselves on their instrument through a balance of ear training and functional knowledge of the instrument.

About Chris

Are you interested in being able to confidently play lead and rhythm parts in a band? Want to learn to write songs? Want to learn to just strum along to your favorite records by yourself? I will teach you or your child all of the knowledge and tools needed to do whatever your dream is on your instr

The basics on mandolin through some standard bluegrass tunes. Personally, I'm a fan of all-things Chris Thile (Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers, his solo material, etc...) but it's great to dive into the bluegrass classics to get started!

About Chris

Chris grew up hearing his dad play guitar around the house and at live shows. He “caught the bug” around age 13 and hasn’t stopped playing since! He’s been teaching guitar since 2003 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Music at North Central University in 2008 where he studied jazz, blues, rock, c

My 15 year-old son started guitar this summer. He has truly enjoyed working with Chris. Chris is patient and encouraging, as well as being a cool guy that my son looks up to.
Helen
My 13-years old son was reluctant to take music lessons. He had not liked piano (with a different instructor) when he was younger, but agreed to try guitar. Since the first trial lesson, he has been excited to learn more!

Chris is a fun teacher who knows his stuff and who communicates well with both his students and their parents. I have three kids and have found it’s difficult to find a teacher who is responsive to parents + engaging with youth + gifted at music.

His rates are very reasonable for our area. His in-home lesson space is professional and comfortable — I get to sit on a comfy couch and get work done during my son’s weekly lesson. In addition, Chris goes above and beyond to make sure the lessons are meeting our expectations. He tracked down strings for us when we accidentally broke one. He has rescheduled lessons due to our busy schedules. He is genuinely kind and such a pleasure to work with — we couldn’t be more thrilled!
Brian
Our kids have loved working with Chris. He picks songs they're excited to play, teaches them patiently, and has a lot of fun with them. They've made a ton of progress since they started with Chris, and they're always excited to see him!

I have been playing mandolin for years. Most of my mandolin background is in folk/bluegrass but I am nonetheless comfortable playing a great number of styles. I often use the Hal Leonard Mandolin method book alongside my own worksheets to help teach basic bluegrass melodies.

About Jared

I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

"I absolutely LOVE taking lessons with David! It is the best part of my week!
Being a somewhat shy individual and an adult student, I was really nervous to begin music lessons with a stranger.. David put me at ease from day one. Each thirty minute session is packed with just enough material to keep me occupied during practice through the week and eager for more by the time our next lesson comes around. His instrument knowledge is phenomenal, and it makes the experience so much more fun to have David accompany my mandolin playing with banjo or guitar. He is also great for giving advice on buying a new instrument. Best-Instructor-Ever! I can't recommend David enough"

"Alex is a terrific instructor, who adjusts lessons based on what the student wants to accomplish. For example, my goals include learning the instruments (baritone uke in octave mandolin tuning and concert uke in mandolin tuning), fingerpicking, playing both melody lines and chords, being able to determine what chords to use without sheet music. So we work on music theory and ear training a lot, as well as learning tunes. Very good instructor who is both flexible and knowledgeable...highly recommend him to others."

How to Play The Mandolin for Beginners: 5 Steps to Get Started

So you want to learn how to play the mandolin. For beginners to playing an instrument, the mandolin is a great option for starting your musical journey. Many people ask, "Is the mandolin easy to play?" or "Is it hard to play the mandolin?" Fortunately, the mandolin is not a difficult instrument to learn. It’s lightweight and compact so you can practice anywhere. It also has less strings than many other instruments, like the guitar, which makes reading tablature much easier. The mand …
