About Molly
Raised in New York city, I attended Stuyvesant High School, the jewel in the crown of the NYC public school system. Traditional academic achievement was not enough for me however, and I went on to study fashion design, honing my artistic skills at Drexel University. Call me a renaissance woman or a Jill-of-All-Trades, I've been employed in fashion houses, graphic design firms and visual effects shops. I've also made my way freelancing as a photographer, web designer, and writer. In addition to this variety of creative skills, I have a Bachelors in Business Administration, and training in Quickbooks. I recently scored a perfect 170 on the GRE verbal, and obtained admission into several competitive doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology.

I realize it is not enough to merely have skills or intelligence in order to be a tutor. One must
be able to convey them to the student in a way that is effective and (hopefully) enjoyable. From the helping students prepare a portfolio for undergraduate admission, to teaching the basics of essay writing, I have a warm attentive attitude that sets students of all ages at ease. My teaching style is focused on the learning style of the person I am working with, tailoring the exercises to help achieve specific goals.

Molly was understanding in scheduling conflicts and worked with me so we could get our lessons done. She made sure that I understood each thing that we went over and gave me homework that helped me get some practice in that I needed. I made a blanket for my sister who just had a baby and it is a wonderful keepsake!

Thanks Molly!

About Cathy
I teach sewing, mostly, but also design clothing and knitwear. I can drape and draft patterns, hand spin and weave, embroider, make lace, style wigs, and am an all-around crafty gal. I graduated with a degree in American Studies from Mount Holyoke College. My background includes over 20 years of building theatrical costumes, wardrobing Broadway shows and regional productions, restoring and reproducing museum textiles and costumes, and dressing the runway shows of NY Fashion Week. I believe we are what we make and glitter is evil. I live in New York City with her husband and their very spoiled Tibetan Spaniel mix Ollie.

I am currently working toward the completion of a Certificate in the Appraisal of Fine and Decorative Arts from NYU.

I am highly conscientious, focused, and competent, and well as thoroughly charming.

Today was my first lesson with Cathy and it was also my first time using Take Lessons. Everything went smoothly in signing up for a lesson. The lesson with Cathy went great!. Cathy is very experienced at sewing, she's also patient, warm, helpful and she explained things in detail which was very helpful. I liked that she welcomed my questions. She also made excellent suggestions, which was explained so that I learned from them. I like that Cathy had a very organized and practical approach to teaching and discussed my project in advance. I came to Cathy with plans to sew my mother a cape. I bought a Simplicity pattern along with a beautiful sheer fabric with embroidered butterflies on it, as well as a lining and fur trim that needed Cathy's profession attention. I learned the best way to sew this together. This was a challenging project and since I never worked with such delicate fabric I felt I needed Cathy's help. I learned quite a lot and it was great to see this great fabric transformed into an amazingly stunning cape. I have some finishing touches to complete, but after it's ready to go. I'm really looking forward to seeing my mother's reaction! I think she's going to love it! I would definitely take classes in the future with Cathy and I recommend her to anyone that would like to learn to sew from beginners to advanced. You'll learn a lot and will enjoy it in the process.

I've only taken one class with Kathy and I can't wait to go back! She was very thorough, answered all my questions, and really knew how to break down sewing in a way that anyone can learn! I highly recommend and will definitely be going back.

I am a complete sewing beginner and taking lessons with Cathy has been great! We discussed an appropriate project to start and she's overseeing the whole process. I get to see and practice the way a professional does it. These are insights the pattern book doesn't give you. I am picking up best practices from the get go and setting a strong foundation and I also get a sense of accomplishment as I have the accountability to move forward. Cathy is patient and pleasant. It's easy to see she knows her stuff. I have no reason to stop taking lessons with her.

About LILY
I am a fashion designer/instructor and former social worker. I am very patient with students and passionate about sewing. I get excited watching students build skills gradually from basic through advanced level techniques.
Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For six years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

About Ellen
Whether you want to begin knitting or crocheting, or already love to, there’s always something new to learn. I love all aspects of knitting and crochet - color, texture, and creation. And I love sharing all this with my students. I personally enjoy the math of it, and can help make it easy if math is not your “thing”.

Would you like to learn basic skills, hone current ones , or enhance your experience with new techniques? If you're in the middle of a project and need help, or have specifice technique(s) you'd like to work on, consider booking a 15 minute class, or a series of them.

Choose from these subjects, or tell me what you’d like to work on:

• Reading the Yarn Ball Band - Why the information on it is helpful and important
• How to use Ravelry - A knitting community full of useful information
• Fiber Math…Yes you can
- How to understand gauge and yarn weights/quantities.
• How to Read and Translate Charts
• Help with a Current Project – Understanding a pattern, technique, or correcting a mistake
• Knitting Lace and Openwork Basics – How to do increases and decreases
• Bead Crochet – Crochet necklaces and bracelets, or embellish knitting or crochet projects with beads.
• Hyperbolic Crochet – For those that love math or want to learn how to crochet curves from a flat surface (think of coral, or the edge of a curly lettuce leaf like kale)
• Your wish list of knitting or crochet skills…

I have been teaching since 2012 and am available to teach lessons online and in NYC. I learned teaching skills from some of the most loved and respected teachers in well-known stores, teaching venues, and events. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals, and have fun while we work together. As an added bonus, I teach both right and left handed as needed. Do you need a time, place, or topic not listed here? Just ask. We can probably work something out.

Enrich your fiber crafting experience. What would you like to learn? Contact me and let’s get started.

About John
Here goes...
I am a chess teacher, tutor, singer, and Shakespearean actor in NYC! I guess you could say I wear a lot of hats.

I graduated with honors in 2009 from New York University with a BFA in Drama. I've been professionally teaching since 2012, but I have always loved sharing the game of chess with anyone who wants to learn (just ask my friends).

Students can expect to face new challenges and to improve each and every week. I am happy to work with students of all different ages and experience levels. As a teacher in the New York Public School system, I know how to make chess simple and friendly enough for Kindergartners, Senior Citizens, and everyone in between! And as an active tournament player (current rating 2000), I can offer great insight into the needs of any skill level. I am thrilled to work with ambitious tournament playe
rs and those who just want to learn how to beat their friends :).

Chess is a wonderful, challenging game, but I truly believe that anyone can learn to play if they are motivated. Come work with me and discover your new obsession!

Know thyself is the saying, and it applies to chess as well.

Everyone is different. Each has his/her different objectives. Everyone also his/her own strengths and weaknesses.

I tailor the lessons taking these into the account, and focusing on improving on the weaknesses within the framework of the student's goals.

I try to put the emphasis on calculation, middle-game positions, and endgames, however.

Hello! I'm Barbara.

I am an entrepreneur, business owner, and designer. As a naturally gifted seamstress with some high school and college experience, I've been sewing for 15+ years now and I love it!

My mother first noticed my interest as a child when she saw me making my Barbie dolls clothing out of my old t-shirts. She purchased me my first sewing machine that I still own and use to this day. I've been sewing ever since!

Sewing is fun and easy when you have a great instructor. With me, you will have fun expressing your creativity while learning basic sewing skills at the same time.
