Pedro is an excellent teacher. He's able to blend the technical aspects of playing with the artistry of the instrument. I've already learned a great deal from him in only five lessons.

I'm an adult student, but you can feel a comfort and relaxed atmosphere in the immediate presence of Pedro. This is such an important factor in learning an instrument. This feeling would serve to greatly help and child right on through adult learning. Good Job!

Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting.
For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically ...

Lydia is an excellent violin teacher. She has a very gentle, patient demeanor which is so important when working with kids. My daughter started lessons just after turning 5, and though her focus was not always there, Lydia always found ways to keep her learning and engaged. 6 months later, my daughter is much more focused and already playing songs and starting to read music. I think it's important to note that Lydia is very organized, always on time, professional, and pleasant to work with. Very highly recommend!

I love to teach students of all levels! I perform regularly with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and I studied viola with Kim Kashkashian at the New England Conservatory. l have been lucky to work with great music teachers my entire life and it brings me great joy to be able to share that tradition with you!

For beginners: learn music fundamentals such as rhythm, harmony, and dynamics. Gain a solid technical foundation to build off of as you advance as a violist.

For intermediate players: expand your current technical abilities to more advanced techniques. Emphasis on growing technical scope & building musicality through development of your individual voice.

For advanced players: get technical advice for difficult passagework in your repertoire, receive feedback on your musical interpretation, prepare for auditions.

I am also available for practice sessions and for one-time coaching sessions.

About Deanna

I have been playing viola for over 20 years. Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. I'd recommend anyone searching for a teacher to go with Laura!

My 9 year old is trying to learn Bohemian Rhapsody on his viola for a talent show and Charles has been very helpful, guiding him through the music with positive reinforcement. We tried a couple other instructors but it wasn't the right fit. Super pleased we found Charles. Look forward to many more lessons to come."

"It was our first lesson with Charles for my 9 year old son. We finally found the right instructor! Without being condescending, he taught my son some basics about holding the instrument correctly, how to bring it up for play.... essentially proper playing etiquette that he is not getting at school from a teacher who is far too stretched with a large class of multiple instruments and only ONE teacher. (She really needs an assistant) I think he is going to learn a LOT and I love that he corrects him without being rude nor condescending. I would give him 5 stars but it's our first lesson. Will review again after a month and hopefully gloat some more about him! :) ~ Very pleased!"

"I have learned a lot from my lessons with Shadwa. She has a knack for explaining technique, for making the connections between the physical movement and the sound produced. (Yes, it really does help to stand up straight!) She takes a personal interest in her students, which makes for a great lesson atmosphere. We established longer term goals that we could work towards; I appreciated her patience and creativity. Even scales became more than just boring drills! I definitely recommend her as a viola teacher for adults!"
