I work with beginners through intermediate level. Classical guitar, folk and rock....chords!
Stephen made his operatic debut in the title role of Gluck's Orfeo in Santa Barbara, CA. Other roles performed in the United States have been Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the title role in John Eccles' The Judgement of Paris and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart. Among the roles sung in Europe were Orlolsky in Fledermaus, Bertarido in Rodelinda and Oberon in Sommernachtstraum. He has been a soloist in many Churches and Synagogues in the United States and Europe. Highlights have been Messiah, Elijah, St. Mathew Passion and Cantorial soloist for the Jewish High Holidays. He appeared in Summer Stock and played the guitar in a number of bands. Reviewers have cited Stephen's naturally full and warm timbre and his unforced agility.
Stephen has a strong interest and knowledge in vocal technique and maintains a s

My 10 year old son has no musical knowledge what-so-ever. We wanted him to have some basics, and he was curious about the guitar. Sadly our family isn't musical and it's hard to know where to start. We were lucky to have engaged Stephen. His calm, patient, encouraging approach has been the perfect complement to my son's temperament.
When I overhear snippets of exchanges during their lesson I am excited that my son is making connections and having a conversation about what he's learning. I can't support his instruction because of my complete inability to read sheet music—so I am particularly pleased that he seems to be making observations and taking small steps towards understanding something that confounds me.
My son looks forward to his time with teacher and (so far) is interested in practicing too. Of course we'd recommend Stephen!

Stephen is great!!!

My first session with Stephen was both technically and emotionally rewarding. He was both able to pass-on his musical expertise (his tips) and patiently encouraging my understanding of vocal technique.

Yoella & Malkiya O.
Mr Yakov is very pleasant, patient and professional. He makes learning fun. One of my daughters is very shy and particular. I was concerned for her first violin. But she ended up loving the lesson and the instructor. We did some lessons online and at his studio. During the online lesson, the connection with our internet was horrible. He could hear her playing but she couldn't hear him. Yet, patiently, he got creative and taught the lesson with my daughter through chat. The environment of the studio is comfortable. You can tell he's passionate about what he does. That left me with a great impression of him. We look forward to more lessons with him for as long as we can.
Thanks Mr Yakov!!!

Every great artist needs a great coach, I'll help you to be the best!
I began my partnership with takelessons in 2013 and teach my students at my home teaching studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My studio is comfortable and creative.
As a highly experienced online music instructor (Takelessons Live, Skype, FaceTime and G+) I’ve helped Takelessons launch/beta test exciting new teaching platforms. I began teaching music as a teenager and have worked with students of all ages and skill levels. I have had the pleasure of coaching well-known musicians/celebrities, being an on-set tutor for feature films, and coached singers through their recording sessions. I treat my novice/hobbyist students with the same enthusiasm and professionalism as my advanced students, giving my very best to all my clients.
Additionally, I work with many stu
dents to prepare for high school/college/conservatory admission, casting calls for TV/Film, major tour auditions, and industry showcases. ______________
I'm the vocalist, lead guitarist & songwriter for a well-known touring rock band with a worldwide fan base and nearly 4 million You Tube views. I graduated from New York University with Bachelor's of Music in Jazz guitar and trained with the most highly respected rock/pop vocal coaches in the world. In 2015, I signed a major label publishing deal with Fieldhouse Music/BMG played throughout Europe (and taught online lessons while away). My songs have been licensed for national/international TV (E!, MTV, VH1, Oxygen, TBS and more), commercials for CBS, Nike, Coca-Cola, Samsung and in video games. I actively perform/record and tour with my (3) bands, and produce/co-write with artists for their own projects.
I’m endorsed by PRS guitars, Elixir Strings, Godin Guitars/Bass Guitars, & Metaldozer Mic Stands.
Styles I regularly teach include: Rock (Classic Rock, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Hard Rock), Metal, Punk, Pop, Jazz, R&B, Blues, Funk, Soul, Classical, Folk. ______________
My students gain expertise in the following techniques and more...

Lead / Rhythm Guitar:
I've developed a step-by-step approach to learning to solo and improvise. Using simple, "guitarist-friendly” techniques you will quickly learn and begin to apply major/minor scales/modes, blues/pentatonic scales and “licks.” You will learn triads, arpeggios, interval studies, and extensions and how to use them to create interesting and melodic solos. With my line development/phrasing techniques, you will have your own library of “licks” that will help you navigate both simple and sophisticated harmonic progressions. I will help you to become a become a well-rounded, three-dimensional guitarist with a unique voice!
A few of techniques I teach:
∙ triads / arpeggios ∙ strumming ∙ alternate/sweep picking ∙ tremolo picking ∙ hybrid picking ∙ scales/modes ∙ slide guitar ∙ hammer on/pull off ∙ (up to 8 finger) tapping ∙ bending / double stops / unison bends ∙ whammy bar techniques ∙ diagonal scales, ∙ arpeggios & note groupings ∙ 3 and 4 finger per string scales ∙ fingerstyle ∙ Jazz scales, chords including 4 note open/closed voicing 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th chords ∙ chord melodies ∙ rhythm and grooves of various styles
Right hand: ∙ finger style, pick ∙ slapping/popping ∙ groove, rhythms and playing time ∙ time signatures, walking bass lines, ∙ arpeggios, double stops, ∙ chords & improvising ∙ writing bass lines.
All of my students learn:
Sight reading (standard notation/tablature) ∙ music theory & ear training ∙ rhythm / timing (including reading rhythms) ∙ composition/songwriting
We will focus 1/2 of the lesson on repertoire and 1/2 the lesson on technique. Many of my students text/email me a few days prior to our scheduled lesson with a song selection for the week. I focus our lesson's technical study with the song in mind. It has proven to be very effective and makes the technique and theory are less "boring."
Studio Equipment I have (7) guitars: including (4) electric, (2) acoustic/electric, & (3) electric bass (2) tube guitar amplifiers, and various guitar effects pedals.
Also, I have an assortment of industry standard dynamic & condenser microphones for live performance and recording applications.

I will help you to find your unique voice, a polished and distinct sound, and your true personality as an artist. I am 100% committed to making you a success!
I will ignite a new, or recharge/rekindle your passion for music, and to sing/play the music you love a lot better!
I found Eric Jayk through the group online classes and wow, what a great Teacher. I’ve taken several of the classes with many different Teachers but after taking one class with Eric J I keep coming back to his Classroom. He is practically a musical genius. You can tell he is very talented yet he has a unique way of making you feel at ease which is the key to learning to singing well. He really knows how to get you to where you want to go in the quickest time. I have struggled with vocal nodules many years ago and after taking classes with him I now know why. I am learning how to place my voice correctly in the mask and also how to properly use my breath so as to control everything. He is the best Teacher I’ve come across thus far for singing. He sends recap videos afterwards for you to use in practice as well. Love his classes and how kind, patient and professional he is. He’s not limited to one type of music. He teaches you so that you can sing ANYTHING. Thanks alot.

Amazing instruction and a really enjoyable lesson. And I’m really starting to see progress in my voice thanks to Eric.
September 6, 2019
Eric is awesome. He is very professional and has great technical knowledge and knows how to apply it to help others learn how to use proper application while singing. He also has a great earI thoroughly looked forward to all his lessons and he was also very flexible.
This kind of stuff isnt always easy through an online medium, but he has a deep understanding of the voice and a trained ear, and he makes it work with a big bag of tricks. 10/10.
I know the guitar inside and out, and have a huge stylistic range. I can help you learn any song or style you're interested in.
I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be part of the TakeLessons team. I first picked up the guitar at the age of 5, and have never looked back! I began formal Jazz training in high school and continued studying guitar and composition at Oberlin College and Wesleyan University. After graduating, I played Organ Trio and small combo jazz in LA, studied Brazilian and African percussion, and went to Japan to study Shamisen and Taiko drumming. I've been playing in various groups since arriving in NYC in 2005, and have recently been working on engineering and composing for film.
My strength lies in my versatility - I love music of all kinds. Whether it's Soul, Samba, or Salsa, Rock, Pop or Hip Hop, I am very good at communicating the mechanics of music so that my students not only learn to play, but learn to listen and write. I have a studio space i
n Manhattan as well as a small mixing studio in my Brooklyn apartment, and I'm happy to show students the ins and outs of recording along with theory and guitar technique.
*** Lesson Details *** Music is fun!!! I strive for all my students to enjoy themselves, to have a great time learning about the world of music. I use a song-based approach to guitar playing. Armed with just a small vocabulary of chords, you can play hundreds of great songs. My students will determine the course of their lesson plan by selecting songs they want to learn. While maintaining proper technique and effective practice methods, we will learn the fundamentals of the guitar by playing the music that we love. After 6 months, you will know all the basic chords, and the fundamentals of playing a solo. As lessons progress, you also learn song structure and some basic harmonic theory so you can begin creating on your own.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student is expected to provide his or her own guitar.
*** Specialties *** Jazz, ear training, songwriting, theory
Electric and Acoustic Guitar, playing from Tabs, Scale Studies, Improvising, Lead Guitar, Solos.
There are many aspects to playing Guitar, but each student will be given intensive help on the aspects they are interested in, with other important aspects sprinkle in to help make them a more complete musician.

Dr. Desmond was a really great instructor! He was very kind and patient with me, he was able to teach me at ability level. He encouraged me to believe in myself and to practice in order to become a better player. He made me feel comfortable and and gave be positive reinforcements when I was doing well as well as positive constructive criticism when I was slacking. I look forward to continuing my courses with Dr. Desmond, I would recommend him to any one interested in learning how to play any instrument.

Had a really good lesson. Dr. Desmond helped me with my technique (which definitely needs work). Had instant impact on the quality of sound I was producing. I would call it an eye-opening experience

Testimonials: From Coda Magazine August 2012: by Seton Hawkins
Through outstanding collaborations like the Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble, guitarist and composer Billy N has emerged as a leading exponent of the music of Brazil. Exploring far beyond the well-trodden bossa nova path. Billy unearths the full range of styles the country offers, including choro, baiào, valsa and samba, and gives American audiences a rich panoramic glimpse into Brazilian art, highlighting its parallels with progressive jazz.
A recipient of composers residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony, he is the curator of a three-day series at the club dedicated to the country's music. Billy will showcase his own group—a sextet with drummer Matt Kane, bassist Leco Reis, saxophonists Michael Attias and Eric Schugren and trumpeter Ben Holmes—in a concert primarily featuring his original works. SH
Reviews of my Book on Alfred Brazil: Guitar Atlas, I love this series and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!
This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.
*** Lesson Details *** I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".
*** Studio Equipment *** I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.
*** Specialties *** Brazilian Fingerstyle - Choro, Samba, Baiao Solo Jazz Guitar - Pick or Fingers Beginning Flamenco Cavaquinho Improvisation for any instrument Harmony and Theory
I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!
I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.
Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments and in multiple genres. I am comfortable teaching piano, guitar, and bass guitar, ukulele, and I especially love teaching music theory. I have extensive theory training at the college level and have written and composed extensively in the classical, rock, jazz, and folk traditions. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your musical goals.
Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).
He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

I hadn't played a musical instrument since elementary school when I started Ukulele lessons with Ben. Ben started from the beginning, answered all my questions along the way, and built upon that information in each lesson. It wasn't in a didactic way, but in a way that was really customized to fit my Ukulele lesson goals. Ben's teaching style is very flexible also. I had some Ukulele lesson books I had been gifted and we worked from those. I didn't feel that I had to buy a bunch of additional equipment, books, etc.
I recommend Ben as a music teacher. He is understanding, encouraging, and inspirational. I am looking forward to continuing lessons with Ben and JC Instrumental.

Ben has been working with our daughter since January 2019, when she turned 6 1/2. He arrives at our home on time each week and he works with her at an age appropriate level. We appreciate that he recognizes the effort she puts into the weeks when she practices often and he gently makes her aware when she hasn't practiced enough. He always speaks with her in a kind way and with us in a collaborative manner. We all want her to enjoy her piano experience, and we are thankful to have found Ben just a few blocks away from our home.
"I really love this guy, and hope to take more lessons once I master the wealth of stuff he gave me in Round One."
"The first lesson with Michael was fun. He has a great personality and doesn't sound like Ben Stein when he's teaching.
Micheal has a great way of comm
unicating the lesson information through teaching principals, he has a wealth of music knowledge and recognizes my way of learning. I liked that the lesson was broken up into segments and he ensured I understood the concept before we moved on the next portion.
Micheal provided valuable feedback during the lesson and followed up with me via email. Included in the email was tablature and backing tracks to assist with practice.
I'm looking forward to our next lesson!"
"As a beginner, I was a little worried about the first lesson being complicated. Not so, learning with Douglas. Great experience! He made it so easy that I
surprised myself enjoying the lesson. Thank you Douglas..."
"After very poor experiences at School Of Rock and Bach To Rock, which emphasized the depletion of my wallet as opposed to actually teaching my son guitar,
I went online to search for a Guitar Teacher in my area. Several instructors came up on my radar. but something about James' profile intrigued me and I gave him a call. Instantly, I knew he was the right choice. From his buoyant and effervescent personality, to his savvy curriculum that combines both theory and learning to play songs that appeals to the student's musical interests, James possesses a unique quality that other instructors in the industry should emulate. Every week, my son really looks forward to having his lesson with James, and so do I, since he brings a positive energy into the house that's infectious. My son has progressed where not only can he read music and charts, but also has an arsenal of songs that he can play. In fact, every song my son has requested, no matter how complex, James has been able to teach him efficiently and effectively. Without reservation, I can easily recommend James as a reliable, fun and great guitar instructor."
"Noah is the reason I know anything about guitar! He is patient, diligent, and kind as a teacher and makes learning fun. His guidance has helped me write c
ountless songs and become more confident as a performer. I'd highly recommend him to anyone looking to expand their chord / scale vocabulary, or just get more comfortable on the instrument."
"Excellent lesson and I'm already looking forward to my next lesson."
"Great personality, very good teacher
"He took extra time when we first started to find out where my daughter was at in her skill and ability, made a book and plan for her, and the took extra t
ime each week to answer every question and really try to teach her effectively. She enjoyed it and wanted to go because she was learning and improving. She even started to appreciate the homework he gave. Will definitely consider him again if the logistics work out."
"I first met Alex a long time ago when we were attending McNally Smith College of Music. Right off the bat, Alex impressed me with his ability to sightread
and his dedication to his instrument. What started as a friendship quickly developed into a study partnership and then a learning opportunity that was of great benefit to me as a guitarist.
Alex spearheaded the forming of a Sight Reading Club and he was it's head instructor. Every week we would get together and work on our chops; very quickly I could see how valuable he was as a teacher and guitar coach. He helped me stick it out during the tough sessions and had the drive to sit patiently as I worked something out in my own time.
I would highly recommend Alex for his patience, persistence, punctuality, and (most importantly) Passion for teaching music. He is a fantastic instructor who I enthusiastically recommend to anyone looking to improve their ability to play the guitar!
Oh and BTW, he's a great blues player - just check out his videos!!!"
