Emily was a patient and highly effective teacher for my 10 year old daughter who is brand new to the flute. She gave great positive reinforcement and was very helpful at outlining a successful strategy towards practicing.

_________________________________

Musicianship as a child was very exhilarating and stimulating so I like to put as much energ
y and excitement into each lesson as possible. Even if there are no signs of progress, the most important thing is to encourage the student because getting better at your instrument is exponential and will usually start off sluggish.

My first steps into getting to know the student better is to begin with having them choose a style of music that they like and play along with some of their favorite artists, in order for them to loosen up and get excited for learning. When I feel the student is fully comfortable and ready to begin our learning process, I will also have them play along with a style more complex, or out of their comfort zone, if you will. This establishes a sub conscious goal that they will want to reach every time they pick up their instrument which result in long-term commitment, respect and understanding of music.

Thanks for checking out my teaching profile! I currently live in New York City (Queens) where I freelance and teach a variety of students. As the school year is about to begin, I have availability during the week and on Saturdays. I suggest booking sooner rather than later! Please feel free to send me a personal message if you have any questions.

I believe that teaching music has to be fun. Trying to force music theory or notated music on a student when they are not ready can be detrimental to their learning process. Students can become very uninterested with music if they aren’t getting what they want out of the lessons. I cater to the students wants, while still delivering to them what they need. Improvisation and groove is something that is both fun and educational, a great tool to keep students interested. Working in theory, is something that comes second, when the student becomes interested in the reason why things are how they are. I do believe, however, that a structured lesson path leads to better results, incorporating a little bit of everything to see how the students react.

About Alyssa
Hi there!

I am a supportive and encouraging teacher willing to teach all ages and abilities. It is my firm belief that music is for everyone.

I am currently pursuing my M.M. from Longy School of Music. I completed my undergraduate work at Rhode Island College, where I studied oboe and bassoon privately. I am currently on the private lesson roster for two public schools in the area, and teach both double-reeded instruments. I have successfully helped young students prepare for and audition into district level ensembles.

I have reed-making experience and can assist students with finicky reeds, to help ease the most frustrating part about playing oboe & bassoon.

I'm looking forward to working with you!

My personal philosophy of music is to explore and learn as much from my students as I can teach them. For me teaching is like going on an adventure to find something together. I've been able to play all over the world and tour with many different musicians and the thing that made the core of every great performance was the human interaction and communication. For me music is about being more human. This is something I just as much try to impart and teach in my lessons as theory and technique.

About Sheree
The joy I feel while teaching and performing music is wonderful. I am a professional composer, vocalist, songwriter and performing artist and have been studying, performing and writing music for 17 years. I have a B.F.A. degree and am working towards my 2nd degree in music.

Some of my music can be heard on the radio, as I am a commercial jingle writer and producer. My jingles have been heard on WBAZ, WBEA and WEHM radio stations. I am a choir director for church and community organizations and have worked as a church piano accompanist. As a performing artist, I produce concerts with my band which include original compositions (in the style of jazz/soul and gospel music) as well as music in other genres including: classical, r&b and pop. For both the aspiring professional musician and those who want to study music for their own person
al enjoyment, I am able to prepare new students with the foundational knowledge they need to succeed both as a performing musician, as well as in an academic music setting.

Students whether studying voice or piano learn the fundamentals of music through basic music theory. Depending on your focus we will work additionally on developing your sight reading and ear training abilities. For my singers there will be emphasis on technique and breathing exercises along with music theory, all of which will allow you to develop the tools you need to further enhance your musical aspirations.

So whether you are looking for lessons for yourself, for your child or a friend I can help new music students realize their musical potential.

Visit my website shereesmusic.com for access to videos and recordings.
