I am a Retired Federal Special Agent and I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. I've always wanted to learn how to play the Highland Bagpipes. I met William a few years ago and he has made my dream come true. William is a caring and patient instructor. He will teach you all details and techniques of playing the instrument and how to play the tunes correctly. William will take a complicated piece of music and will show you an easy path to successful completion of of playing the tune. I have seen William teach all ages and genders and special needs students and all have been successful musicians. William has transformed this hard headed student from a person that could not read music to a performing as a band member with the Tucson Highlanders Pipe band. I STRONGLY recommend William as a Bagpipe Instructor.

William as been giving me lessons on the bagpipes since January of 2013, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. William's guidance, style, and skill have taken me from my first lesson on the practice chanter to my first public performances.

William has a easy-going, comfortable and capable style of teaching. He is comfortable adapting to each student's wants and needs rather than forcing each student to follow the same lessons and learning path. He has taught the bagpipes to students from all walks of life and ages.

I've been very happy with his training. I'm looking forward to continuing my training with him, and would recommend him to beginners and experienced musicians alike.

William is an amazing teacher. Not only has he taught me to play the bagpipes but has also managed to form a greater appreciation for music in general. The little tidbits of information he throws into a lesson really stick with my mind and thus I feel I have learned a great deal more than just one instrument. He has clearly been teaching for a long time, you can tell by his patience and his resourcefulness of teaching techniques depending on the student. While he will show you proper technique he also throws in an analogy that manages to make a complicated piece of music understandable. I strongly recommend lessons from William if you want to learn the instrument and the music of bagpiping.

I believe music offers invaluable lessons for developing creativity, hard-work ethic and self-awareness.

I consider myself to be an easy-going but effective teacher. Students have told me that I'm patient and great at explaining difficult things.

Prior to the first lesson, I will ask you for some background information about the student's experience with music
(lessons/teachers, listening habits, attention/focus, etc.).

During each lesson, we will go over fundamental techniques, songs and improving overall musicianship.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

My son has started playing trumpet at school for 2 months. As he progresses very well and has the interest in trumpet, he needs a formal trumpet tutor to build the solid foundation and boost his skill. Luckily we find Jerry on takelessons. Jerry is very professional about teaching trumpet. He provides the material and shows the basic technique to my son. He sets up the daily practice routine. After 2 weeks, we notice that my son improves his sound production ans his skill!

Connor is so easy to work with, extremely knowledgable, and motivating! My son really enjoys the lessons and interacting with Connor. My son has been randomly picking up his guitar to try things from the lessons which a is a huge improvement from the last time we tried lessons. I attribute that to Connor's instructions and passion for what he does. He is also punctual and a good communicator. I highly recommend Connor as an instructor, especially for kids!

I want to give aspiring drummers the right tools that will allow them to accomplish their goals as an overall musician. I took weekly lessons from Eric for over 4 years. I had very little experience playing the drums, but a lot of desire to learn. I couldn't have chosen a better instructor than Eric.
He taught me how to read music, and always wrote out practice drills which really helped me in learning the overall lessons. Eric is extremely perceptive, and can immediately recognize what his students do well and wrong. By isolating specific parts of the lesson that causes difficulty, Eric creates drills that make learning the new part easier and more fun.
He will also play the part for you to give you an idea of how it should sound.
Because of Eric, I have learned numerous styles of drumming and the principles behind them.
Eric is a cool guy with an easy going personality, but he will always challenge you to do your best.
I strongly recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to play the drums.

I started off taking drum set lessons with Eric a little less than a year ago with almost no experience with percussion besides a basic understanding of music theory and little bit of practice with rudiments. When I started off, I could barely keep a beat and now I'm learning some really awesome Jazz patterns hoping to get into Lane Tech's Jazz band next year. The lessons usually go with review and/or a show-of-progress with the prior weeks material and then we know whether or not we should keep practicing the material or move on. If I've got it down then well move on to some new groves which he will write out for me and then show me how they sound and give me some tips for practicing the grooves for the week. I honestly have to say that Eric has been really motivating and encouraged me to keep practicing and I know I've made a lot of progress.
