Music is a universal language, and it is for everyone.
I believe in a fun and safe learning environment, and my goal as a teacher is to have the student leave the lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and connected. I was touched by music at a young age, and it remains to be the most amazing, and the most positive force in my life, and it's been truly rewarding to be able to share this magic with aspiring musicians.
Throughout the years, I helped many of my students develop a strong bond with music. Many of them have succeeded in school ensembles and became award winning soloists.
Upon graduating from high school, some have moved on to pursue music in college and beyond, while some of them continue to enjoy playing as a hobby : )

About Masaru

We all need music - now more than ever, as we live in this unprecedented times. My name is Mas and I have been serving communities around the world as an active musician and a music educator for over 20 years on saxophones, flute, and clarinet. As a language teacher, I was looking for a clarinet/saxophone instructor with excellent communication skills and the ability to teach musical technique in an empathetic way. I was lucky to find Masaru Koga in Cupertino, California.

I enjoyed weekly lessons for about three years and really reached the point where I was constantly improving my clarinet mastery and getting closer to my performance goals. At one point, I became so enthusiastic, I also began saxophone lessons with Masaru!

I looked froward to meeting him for my weekly lessons and felt he gave more than 100% in patience, encouragement, and musical technique. He has a very warm, giving personality and when we were together, I made great progress and was very motivated to study and practice on my own.

I enthusiastically recommend Masaru Koga to other music students and wish I could be his student again!

Encouraging and attentive, with a relaxed style of teaching. My son enjoyed his weekly saxophone lessons with Mas for several years.

He was awesome teacher! He upgraded me in higher level of playing sax.

Is it hard to learn a musical instrument? That’s usually the first question
people ask. My answer? Not at all! I teach music in three
easy steps: Speak, Read, Write. "Speaking" music simply means learning to
listen and play your instrument. Reading and Writing are what allow you to
pick up your favorite piece of music and learn it on your own, just like
reading a book. Whether you want to play in a concert hall or in your living
room, I will give you the knowledge and technique to help you make
music a part of your life.

The first session was great. Rebecca was warm, kind and natural. She wanted to form a solid foundation by asking my daughter about her interest, what she wanted to learn, the artist she likes and let her sing to have an understanding of her vocal skills. We are excited to work with Rebecca as my daughter loved her. Totally recommend her to both kids and adults.

"I've been going to Brent for piano lessons for over a month now and my understanding and playing has dramatically improved. He is teaching me both piano fundamentals and jazz simultaneously. I didn't think it was possible but as I'm getting my fundamentals down, I'm also learning Jazz phrasing and rhythm principles.

Brent is a great teacher for any level of piano player. I tried teaching myself for the past year (mainly off youtube) but I've made more progress in 1 month learning from Brent that I have in 12 months on my own. While always taking into account my personal piano goals, Brent is able to identify ineffective aspects of my technique and gaps in my understanding of basic theory and has titrated the perfect amount of new attainable material to keep me engaged and sitting down to practice every chance I get.

Highly recommended for any style (jazz, classical, blues, pop, etc...)."

"I am very thankful I found Joan. I must confess initially I wasn't sure how the lessons would work out since it was through the web I found her. But as the weeks went on, I saw chemistry building between her and my kids (ages 10, 6), and now (3.5 months into the lesson), I see my daughters playing and improving in their musicality and performance. I was especially grateful because we had just moved and my older daughter looked like she was at another quitting point. (She had 3 not so great piano teachers in the past then 1 really good teacher, and so was sad to leave her last piano teacher and wasn't very motivated to go on. We had moved from the Bay Area to SD so we had to look for new teacher) Joan patiently worked with her and tried to figure out what would get her going, and about 2 months in, we saw things really happening! I am thankful, too, with how she is working with my younger daughter as well, in building basics of her music knowledge. I would say Joan's strength as a teacher would be her patience and flexibility. Highly recommend her."
