About Ray
Hello!

My name is Ray, I'm 31 years old, and was born in Queens, NY. I studied classical music for many years as a youngster at the Aaron Copeland School of Music college preparatory program. During this program I was introduced to Jazz, and around the same time began experimenting with synthesizers. I went on to study Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and quickly became a very sought after studio musician and performer.

I've been successfully teaching many instruments and proficiency levels for approximately 16 years now, and can say with pride that teaching is my passion, and I anticipate it remaining a very important part of my life.

I enjoy reading nonfiction books on science, math, and philosophy.

*** Lesson Details ***
My music lessons are unique for three main reasons:

1. I h
ave a very deep understanding of music, sound, and theory, and feel music to be one of my native languages.

2. I have devoted considerable amounts of time and energy studying neuroscience, which has greatly improved my understanding of the learning process.

3. I have been blessed with the tremendous amount of patience necessary to guide a student through the necessary steps it takes to learn at whatever pace is optimal, in order to maximize the efficiency of the learning process for each individual.

*** Equipment ***
Students must have their own instrument, and purchase their own materials (books, etc). From time to time I make my way to a local music shop, and am happy to purchase materials for reimbursement.

*** Specialties ***
Classical music is my background, and what I believe to be the most cognitively and emotionally fulfilling style of music to listen to, study, and play. That said, I'm also a big fan of pop music (as well as other genres), and encourage students to enjoy, for example, learning their favorite songs from the radio.

My understanding of music theory is extremely thorough, and I'm happy to incorporate as much or as little of it as the student's interest dictates, nevertheless maintaining the minimal amount of theory necessary to get the most out of learning music and the instrument.

Thanks for checking out my profile! Please contact me with any additional questions you may have, as well as to inquire about day/time availability. I'll do my best to get back to you right away (usually within a few hours).

I have been teaching saxophone for 22 years. I have an earned Masters degree in music and enjoy teaching students of all ages. I am happily married with 5 children at home--4 of them are musicians as well (the youngest is 4).. Students will quickly learn not only the basics of music theory, but will be playing songs as early as their first lesson. It is extremely rewarding watching students have fun, excel, and fall in love with making music. I presently teach music at 3 schools (1 college) and only have a few lessons slots available. I look forward to working with you.

You'll be playing songs in no time! With over eight years of teaching experience with students of all ages, I know how to tailor your experience to you or your child's goals and experience level. I believe that we get the most joy from playing our instrument by developing strong fundamentals so that new musical challenges are enlightening rather than frustrating.

About Julian
I began teaching in-home lessons to K-12 and adult students in 2010. Since then I have:
1) Taught thousands of fun and engaging lessons to over 150 students
2) Helped high school students attain successful college music auditions
3) Had students on saxophone AND clarinet place successfully in All-State and All-County Honors Bands and Gifted and Talented Ensembles

Whether your student is excelling and wants new musical challenges to stay engaged or you think they could enjoy music but are struggling to keep up, I have experience with that situation. I am a passionate performer myself, and I released my debut jazz album in early 2018. I truly believe that music is one of the greatest sources of joy in the world.

I played the sax through high school and then stopped playing until I retired ~ 4 years ago. I started lessons with Julian when he lived nearby and have continued with "skype" lessons since he moved out of the area. He's a great teacher: motivational, thorough knowledge of both classical and jazz, kind, good sense of humor, and a good communicator. I highly recommend him.

I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email.

I am a multi-instrumentalist, with 14 years of experience playing saxophone, 8 years of collegiate study in saxophone performance with modular studies in Jazz, Music Theory, Composition, and Pedagogy.

With a broad range of skills spread across a wide gamut of instruments, I have ample experience in adapting and learning concepts in a cross-disciplinary manner and have a great facility for fostering growth and diagnosing learning discrepancies.

Lessons are comprehensive; covering not just saxophone technique, but valuable skills and concepts within the idiom that provide students with a well-rounded education and understanding of their musicianship.

Most importantly, I am performing professionally on a weekly basis and putting my own skills and education to work constantly.

About Machado
I am a professional multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, audio engineer, and educator based out of Portland, OR.

I have 8 years of collegiate experience in performance, composition, theory, and pedagogy from Washington State University, University of Puget Sound, and Whitman College.

I play saxophone, drums, piano, and bass for groups such as Thankusomuch, Integer, Mordecai, Othership Connection, and SARCA.

I have produced, mixed, and mastered for projects by artists like Rob Araujo, Eyelovebrandon, @tlas, and 2uo.

My compositions have been featured in Washington State University's College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research journal in accordance with grant research on contemporary composition methods.

I am a signed artist at Marmoset Music Licensing in Portland, and have independently released six albums that were al
l mixed, mastered, and produced by me.

I love education, and really enjoy passing the skills I've gained along to enthusiastic students. Passion is a very important factor of musicianship to me; don't do it if you don't love it.

My teaching philosophy is to serve as a resource to students, or even, to act as a sounding board for them and their ideas. I evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses over a few diagnostic lessons, then I determine what the student wants from lessons. The curriculum I build is based entirely on what I feel will help the student thrive most, but while also remaining wary of supporting their desires.

I feel like teaching musical concepts also makes me stronger at them, so I strive to keep myself honest while providing a clear pathway to steady progress with my students.

Nobody becomes a superstar overnight; I'm here to continue to push until my students can achieve new heights.

From the casual musician to the returning professional, my lessons teach you what works. I'm completely serious when I say that you're guaranteed to get started quickly and feel good about the progress you make each lesson. From buying your first saxophone setup (sax, mouthpiece, reed, and accessories) to developing strong practice techniques, I'll make sure you get realistic advice that works for you. After our first lesson, I aim for no questions left unanswered.

About Ritchy
I am a professional multi-instrumentalist part of a band that has toured on both coasts and performs regularly on the east coast. I also write journals, poems, lyrics and other creative writing on a regular basis for commission. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a bachelors in Music focusing on Saxophone and Piano as my primary instruments.

The years I spent studying and immersing myself in the world of music theory helped me create a very passionate connection to music. Saxophone is the love of my life and has created so much joy over the years just from practice and performance. Knowing firsthand the fun and personal connection someone can make with music, this is what I focus on in any lesson I teach. Technique and scales are merely avenues to playing music that you connect with. While I do know all the cou
ntless fundamentals that lead to a strong musician, my goal with any lesson I teach is to never lose sight of the connection to the craft.

I would also go on to say that this principle doesn't merely stop at music. It extends into my creative writing and especially my cooking as well. I grew up surrounded by the sounds and smells of traditional Caribbean cuisine at home with my mom. She is my largest influence as a cook and as a creator. My mother taught me to be focused and purposeful in my habits at the stove and in life. She always said that Cooking that comes from the heart beats any recipe book and I believe her. Whether it be the simple ramen dish or five star cuisine, I always aim to teach how to cook stress-free and passionate. Even if you don't choose me as your teacher, I sincerely hope my words here can be carried into whatever you do. Thank you for stopping by and I hope we can create something special together. :)

I began playing saxophone and piano in the 2nd grade. I was a member of the New York State ‐ All State Jazz Band in High school. I performed regularly at Ossining High School where I was a member of the elite Woodwind Ensemble and played 1st alto sax and flute in the Jazz Big Band and Jazz Workshop ensembles. I also performed periodically in Westchester County and New York City with groups from the Lagond Music School where I studied and had taught privately starting in 2003.

At an ea

I studied saxophone, flute and clarinet privately with Jon Irabagon (winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition) and with Charlie Lagond at the Lagond Music School in Elmsford, New York.

During High School I was a regular attendee at the SUNY Summer Jazz Institute in Purchase, New York where I had the privilege of attending Master Classes led by Ralph Lalama and played alto sax in workshop ensembles led by Ralph as well as Doug Munro, Jon Gordon and Charles Blenzig.

In college, at New York University, I had the distinct pleasure of working with musical masters, Lenny Pickett, Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Rich Perry, John Scofield, Wayne Krantz, to name a few. My time at NYU helped me hone my creativity and prowess as an artist.

Lessons are customized for your goals, and the styles of music that you love.

About Joe
I'm a professional saxophone artist and a teacher of woodwinds/piano as well as improvising / theory / songs-learning techniques for any instrumentalist or singer. I studied music at New York University, as well as with many great saxophonists and workshop masterclass instructor, and have ten years' experience teaching woodwinds, piano/keys, and other musicians of all ages, levels, and backgrounds.

Lessons and curriculum are all customized for your goals, and my students all learn how to play the music that They Love- as well as widen their appreciation for the musical arts, and learn the essential components and benefits of having their own Practice which can translate into schooling, sports, and careers in any field. While competitiveness is not the focus of my teaching approach, students of mine have gone on to win auditions for
region/state bands; get into jazz major programs; or increase their chair in the school band.

As a performer, I spent nearly ten years working with some of the best in the business in New York City and on tours of Europe, the United States, and Brazil - including regular work with members of James Brown's band, Lauryn Hill's band, Prince's band, Fela Kuti's band, and numerous others. Other Google-able semi-famous artists I've worked with include the MacArthur genius George E. Lewis; Archie Bell; Karikatura; Jae Soto; and my own experimental trio dustlights (currently putting out records on the world-renowned jazz label Ropeadope). I have written/arranged horns for an India-New York colloboration Maati Baani, which went viral (660k views). And I have written and produced music for film featured at the Cannes festival.

I am opening a private lesson studio at my home in Downtown Carrboro (across the street from Open-Eyed Cafe), and also making myself available for at-home lessons in the greater Triangle area.

Please feel free to contact me here with any questions, comments, or inquiries. And thank you for considering me for your musical education.

Are you looking to start out on the saxophone? Or are you already a sax player looking to improve as a musician and reach that next level of playing? Wanna crush your jazz solo or audition? I can help you get there.

About Ariel
Hello there! My name is Ariel. I graduated from the University of Jamestown with a Bachelors in Music Education and Flute performance. I am primarily a flute family specialist: piccolo, flute, Alto and Bass flute are all in my wheelhouse. Through my years of schooling I have learned many other instruments and also am very skilled in voice, so I am qualified to teach most categories. I taught in the North Dakota Public School system in very small school districts for several years. My greatest strength while teaching was working one on one with each individual to get my students to a much higher level of playing and musicianship. I truly believe meeting each individual where they currently are and going from there is the best policy for growing as musician.

I also believe that in order to be the best teacher I can be I must continue to
grow as a musician as well. So, I too continue to work to improve my skills, and play with great ensembles to keep my skills sharp and ever growing. At the moment I play in 4 different community ensembles around the state of North Dakota and also participate annually in IMC's Adult Community Music Camp. Typically you will find me playing the flute and piccolo, but occasionally I pick up the Tenor Sax to play in Jazz combo, and when the season is right you will find me lugging around my Euphonium to play all of the Regional Tuba Christmas Events in North Dakota annually and from time to time I play in brass choirs. I truly believe the act of making music with an ensemble is a major key to success and fulfillment on your journey as a musician.
