Music is a universal language, and it is for everyone.
I believe in a fun and safe learning environment, and my goal as a teacher is to have the student leave the lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and connected. I was touched by music at a young age, and it remains to be the most amazing, and the most positive force in my life, and it's been truly rewarding to be able to share this magic with aspiring musicians.
Throughout the years, I helped many of my students develop a strong bond with music. Many of them have succeeded in school ensembles and became award winning soloists.
Upon graduating from high school, some have moved on to pursue music in college and beyond, while some of them continue to enjoy playing as a hobby : )

I enjoyed weekly lessons for about three years and really reached the point where I was constantly improving my clarinet mastery and getting closer to my performance goals. At one point, I became so enthusiastic, I also began saxophone lessons with Masaru!
I looked froward to meeting him for my weekly lessons and felt he gave more than 100% in patience, encouragement, and musical technique. He has a very warm, giving personality and when we were together, I made great progress and was very motivated to study and practice on my own.
I enthusiastically recommend Masaru Koga to other music students and wish I could be his student again!

Beginning my studies on clarinet, I understand the challenges which the instrument presents. I continue to perform the clarinet in big band and in the pit orchestra for musicals. Beginner students will learn basic foundation skills (such as embouchure, air, posture, hand position, tonguing techniques, and reed maintenance) in a fun environment where the student's needs come first. Intermediate students can expect to learn more demanding techniques (such as double tonguing, circular breathing, whole tone and octatonic scales) and selections from the clarinet repertoire in an encouraging but challenging environment.

We will use one of the beginner books depending on your level of ability. I want to use scales and exercises to make sure you are getting a good foundation as a clarinet player. We may play duets to help you increase your independence. I want to see you working on a solo also to be performed at recital.

I am a retired band director with thirty-two years of experience. Many of my former students have gone on to great careers, including a band director in Texas, district manager of a Guitar and Drum Center store and even a trumpet player with the Army in Korea! Students can expect to learn in a setting that’s both challenging but understanding. I stick to standard etude books for establishing fundamentals but also encourage students to voice what they’d like to play or learn.

As a performer I have played clarinet in various settings, musicals, jazz band, classical, and can therefore teach a variety of styles. In lessons we will cover basic music fundamentals but also work toward your personal goals. I believe it is important to find what makes music special to each student. Lessons should be fun and engaging! My students have auditioned successfully into regional bands and select bands at school every year. But we also play top 40 tunes or whatever interests them most.
About Kendra
I am a musician with an equal passion for performing and teaching. I have taught ages 8-80 at all levels from beginner to advanced. I believe in the importance of teaching a strong core of music fundamentals but I also want to find what makes music special for each individual student. I believe less

Kendra is wonderfully, broadly trained, and very effective at working with me on everything from embouchure and fingerings to maximizing effectiveness of practice. She is ALWAYS upbeat, supportive, friendly, PATIENT, and helpful - and I've always looked forward to our lessons. She is very good at figuring out how to be helpful, and how to keep the joy in music even while working on technique, and at my request, music theory. I could not have enjoyed the experience more, or been more successful, than with Kendra.
