Tremendously knowledgeable and able to teach complex things very simply. Everything he taught me was so much more profound and important to understanding music that I could have imagined. Highly recommend him as a mentor if one is at all interested in music.

I am Ivan I've been playing bass since 1972, i only however been teaching beginner and intermediate bass guitar and theory(professionally) since 2007, not including the people i use to teach bass back in the day and here and there. you want to learn bass, i teach bass you can understand, i can come to you, or you can come to my home studio were we can record cd's of you playing (before and after). Music Major Inkster high school, Inkster Mi. (74-79). Detroit School of Music, Detroit Mi.(80-81). Music Minor Richmond College, Dallas Tx.(Major; Business Computer Programming Associate Degree 86-88
). i am currently studying advanced Music Theory, Harmony, Arranging and Composition. Awards include, multiple trophies, letters of excellence, 1st and 2nd place music proficiency medals 1974-1979. i have played on several studio recordings, commercials, albums, and CD's with talented artist. Learning to play from a DVD or the internet can not properly teach a beginner bass player, because there has to be student/teacher interaction, one has to already know how to play in order for a DVD to be effective, and truly believe one will still need an instructor. I enjoy teaching and playing bass. i teach (4 to 6 string), which includes learning to read bass clef notes, scales, chords, keys signatures and time on the music staff, etc., etc., i can teach tab also. i like to teach beginners to give them the correct and formal fingering techniques, then later if they like, they can go all willy nilly. i get satisfactory results. I also teach beginner guitar and piano, all the above applies to guitar and piano lessons, and music theory and ear training. i like using small i's

Ivan is a great tutor! He really helped me get a better understanding of music theory and also helped me improve my understanding of playing music on the piano overall. I used to take lessons at Axis Music Academy, which is a really well respected music learning institution. However, my instructor there focused more on getting me through the lessons then making sure I understood what was going on. I choose to continue my lessons with Ivan because I see my music comprehension growing and I feel that he knows exactly how to teach you to make sure you understand what your doing.

Marc M.

Livonia, MI

About Marc

I teach all styles of guitar, as I have been in many different types of music situations: Soloist (Classical) Ensemble (Classical and Jazz) Lead and Rhythm (Various Rock and Roll bands) Songwriting and Recording. I am a people person that learned the guitar from many different sources. Most of my learning came from watching others and communicating with others. I like to learn about the people I am teaching so that I can better understand their needs as a musician. My education came as a practical necessity in order to get better as a teacher and performer, as well as make a living doing it. B
ut, by no means do I preach the need to be "educated" but only to be a working, practical musician. I will surely go over the need to read music once the need becomes evident, enlighten you as to why it may be important to understand certain aspects of music as opposed to just "picking and grinning", IE learning only "By Ear." I do specialize in music theory, and have many students taking lessons simply for this excellent foundation for songwriting also.

I am a classically trained guitarist that performs both as a soloist and for ensemble in a wide variety of styles. I graduated in 1996 from Schoolcraft College with an Associates degree in Music performance, and then, studying under the tutelage of Brian Roberts went on to receive my Bachelor's degree in Guitar Performance with a secondary in Jazz from Wayne State University in 2004. While at Wayne State and along the way I've performed and participated in several masterclasses with renowned artists: William Kanengiser, John Holmquest, Philip Candelaria, Jason Vieaux, Scott Tennant, and Antigoni Goni. I have also completed the teacher requirements for books 1-a and 1-b for the Suzuki Guitar Institute.

Many of my classical guitar and electric guitar students have went on to study further at the collegiate level, some achieving scholarships. My most recent students are current Berklee school of music graduates now in a band called "Flight of Fire", recently opened for Bonjovi this past summer and are getting air time on local radio stations... well on their way to living the dream! …the bulk of my students become full time professional musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an extremely patient person who has been teaching for over 20 years. I am laid back so there will be no pressure. With my electric and steel string guitar students, I host a special "Jam Session" 2 - 3 times a year to which will be one of your goals to participate in. This includes playing with a drummer, bassist, singer and another guitar player (usually me) and having it recorded. This should serve as your motivation to practice. This really eliminates the need for me to pull out a "yardstick" and "smack" your hands over the knuckles when not practicing your scales as many old traditional teachers may have done!

At your first lesson I will talk with you and give you examples of music that is played with a Flat-Pick, or music that uses the Finger-Style technique. This will be an important process as it will dictate which direction you will go in as a musician and especially during our lessons.

For the most part, playing with a Flat-Pick is generally used with the electric guitar and with most mainstream styles of music like "Rock and Roll", "Blues", "Rock-a-Billy" "Funk", and playing with the Finger-Style technique is used in styles like "Classical" and "Folk." After a while, I will introduce you to the other style of playing as well, as most great guitar players use both techniques in their playing...musicians (guitarists) such as: “Jimmy Page“, “Brian Setzer”, “Stevie Ray Vaughan”, “Joe Satriani”, “Lindsey Buckingham”, “Paul McCartney”, “John Mayer”, and many, many more.

To make learning the guitar Fun, I make sure to incorporate your main interest(s) first. Whether it be learning your new favorite song(s), learning how to write a song, or just learning some basics that you can use for when sitting around the campfire. This will be intertwined with which style you choose to start with: Flat-Pick or Finger-Style.

Pending on the level that you are starting at, (beginner, intermediate, advanced) I will include tidbits of music theory that will be used in a consistent manner. These will usually be progressive, pending on your level. For example, the songs you learn will be written out in an easy to understand chart that will have the fundamental aspects of theory (IE, chords, key, and rhythm pattern) that all musicians should understand.

With Children learning with a Flat-Pick, I encourage the use of a basic guitar instruction book.
Level One (beginners) :

"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book One" by Will Schmid.

I will also use as a substitute for Level One:
"Alfred's Basic Guitar Method" by Alfred's Publishing Co.

More advanced players who can read music already (and graduates from book one) I prefer;
"Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book Two"

With Adults, I will ask if learning to read music interests you. It is a vital part of a practicing musician, but sometimes your needs may require a more one dimensional approach as time may be of essence. Again, I learned by ear and educated myself later...so I understand the person who wants to hold off on reading right away.

Students who want to learn the Classical (Finger-Style) approach will be encouraged to purchase a beginners book that I use written by one of my first instructors/mentor. It is a very intuitive book that covers the technique in great detail yet is very easy to understand (along with my help.) I will provide means of acquiring this book at your first lesson.

Students who want to learn the Folk (Finger-Style) approach will usually start in the above book, unless your an adult who just wants to learn some basics.

At your first lesson I will also provide you with documentation that goes more in depth about the various styles of guitar as the above info is scaled down.

-Guitars (Electric, Acoustic, Classical, Bass)

I am in my 40's and just starting to learn to play. Marc has been the best. He can easily break down the lessons in language that I can understand and he is incredibly patient. He makes it so that I am learning techniques when I don't even know that I am. I cannot say enough great things about Marc. Marie K.

Ypsilanti, MI

About Marie

Music can be found in every part of the world in every culture and there is nothing better than to be able to make your own music. I am a dramatic soprano and possess my master's degree in vocal performance and am still active as an opera singer around the country. I have a real passion for music and enjoy opening the doors for you to have the same enjoyment; and if we hit a road block there are always windows that can be opened! I have taken music lessons since I was five, so I am familiar with the trials and tribulations faced at all levels by music students and I have the patience and a
bility to work with you to achieve your musical goals. I have worked as a private teacher for several years with students as young as five and as old as mid-eighties and believe all that is required for a stellar music student is the desire to learn and the right environment.

My approach to singing is from a holistic perspective focusing on the physics of how sound is made. If you have studied singing previously, my approach may be very different from what you've ever done but if you join me on the journey you will find you have never produced sound easier.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be, first and foremost, fun. During lessons with me, students can expect someone who is willing to put forth every bit as much effort as you do. It is my goal to make every lesson productive even if no practicing was done during the week prior. I view it as my responsibility to help you ignite your desire to work so I work hard to be a motivating factor.

What to expect for your first lesson:
The first lesson is not an audition, but rather a get to know each other session.
---For voice students we will begin with some warm-ups so I can get a feel for your voice which will allow me to tailor your program for your specific needs and goals. We may also sing through a song you know or something standard (like Jingle Bells or Happy Birthday) so I can get a sense of what will best suit your voice. After this, I encourage you to bring a song you've worked on previously so I can get even more of an understanding of where you are at vocally.
---For piano students we will start with some basic discussion on how to sit at the piano, where middle C is, some simple finger placement and body mechanics, and then some basic songs.

I tailor my curriculum to meet my students' needs. I enjoy the Alfred methods for beginning theory and piano for both adults and children. For beginning voice, I will use theory as well as songs tailored to help students learn proper, healthy vocal habits. If a student already has books that have been used previously, I will work with those and provide supplemental materials as necessary. Each student requires a different curriculum to blossom to full potential.

A typical lesson will include theory, warm-ups/scales, and working on repertoire.

In general, within three months all students will be able to read music, understand markings in the music, and will have played or sung through several of their favorite songs. In six months, the student will have progressed to more complex music.

I hope that you will consider voice or piano lessons for yourself or for a family member or friend. I tailor lessons to individual students and will make them fun and worthwhile.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained in voice so I focus on a healthy sound that will last lifelong.

I am able to help with diction and phonetics for singers in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and French as well as some Russian, Czech, and Polish.

I have an associate's degree in early childhood education and I am comfortable working with children as young as 3 in certain cases. Please know that learning to read music will progress slower than it would with an older child, however setting the foundation with music this early helps children through out their entire education and beyond.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For lessons in your home, I need access to a piano or full size keyboard.

*** Alternative Medicine ***
I am finishing my first year of study towards my doctor of naturopathy degree.

*** Notes ***
I have two dogs and three cats. If you are allergic, we will not be able to work in my studio. We can work in your home or online, however.

My lessons with Marie are perfect for me. She is a very positive person which adds to my excitement of learning. Marie also understands that each person has areas of music that are easier to grasp than others areas and provides me with worksheets for my difficult areas; very helpful. Marie is also able to recognize how much I can do in a week (how many pages in the lesson and technique books) so I don't feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed.

I look forward to many more lessons with Marie and give her a 5 star rating. BTW, she comes to my house, which I appreciate, which allows me to play on my own piano for lessons.

Marie is patient and fun

Marie is my wife. However, she has also helped me learn piano. I am not good, however, she is patient with me. Let's face it, if she can teach me, she can teach anyone!

Marie is very talented (all husbandly love aside). She sings like an angel even when she would say she is doing terribly.

She enjoys teaching and goes the extra mile, often spending hours a week after lessons making sure her students have the warmups needed, music examples, and anything else you can think of to help them.

And, like I said, if my wife can teach her husband piano with a smile on her face, she can have patience working with anyone.
