Jill G.

Roslindale, MA

About Jill

I've been in and around music all my life. I started violin at age 5, part of the first generation of Suzuki violinists in the United States. I've loved being a professional violinist and violin teacher for over 30 years! And I've also founded and directed three community music schools in Newburyport, Boston, and Manhattan.

I hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, and I'm lucky to have had wonderful experiences during my formal training! In my undergraduate years, I was awarded a full 4-year scholarship for string quartet and chamber music playing, which was invaluabl
e as a real-world training. In graduate school, I was fortunate to learn so much as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate violin students.

I have also been an innovator in musical education, and I've felt honored to coach numerous already gifted violin teachers who have sought me out to improve their techniques for best teaching practices. From my 30+ years of private violin teaching and observing how children learn, I developed a super fun groundbreaking class in New York City for 2.5 to 5 year old beginners called Crackerjack Kidz! And a few years ago, I wrote a text to accompany young students and their families.

I continuously work to be a master teacher dedicated to the very best methods, using a variety and combination of techniques and strategies tailored to the student's musical success and enjoyment.

My specialties include music-based early childhood development, adult beginners and continuing learners, intermediate and advanced players, and chamber music coaching.

I welcome you to start your family's musical journey with me!

*** Lesson Details ***
While each lesson is different, we always try to spend a little time warming up, making sure we're comfortable and free of tension, reviewing what we've worked on, and layering in new concepts each time. We also learn age appropriate music theory (the "why's" of how music works), we exercise our imaginations, and we learn how to effectively practice.

We learn to think, solve problems, hear the music in our minds, and coordinate our bodies to play beautifully! Along the way we learn skills for life, the joy of accomplishment, and love of ourselves and others!

Whether you're a toddler or a senior, violin can always teach new things and help students appreciate more about themselves and the world!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with keyboard and computer. Parents can sit it on lessons, and are enouraged to do so with young students.

*** Specialties ***
I'm a classically trained violinist and a master teacher with over 30 years of experience. I've been teaching Suzuki violin to children ages 3 and up for my whole career, and I'm also extremely comfortable with traditional methods for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students of any age.

My specialties include:
music-based early childhood development
adult beginners and continuing learners
intermediate and advanced players
chamber music coaching.

My first lesson in many many years! You may as well say I was a beginner. As an adult learner, I need a type of instruction that will leave me motivated to continue and Jill was just PERFECT. Knowledgeable, patient, she uses tricks and techniques to facilitate learning. I learned so much in just the first lesson. I am very motivated to continue and to get to a point where I can actually play!

Kristen B.

Boston, MA

About Kristen

I want to dispel the myth that only a select few are "gifted" with beautiful voices. Singing is like a sport; it is a skill requiring refined muscular coordination, which anyone can improve with practice and focused instruction.

My teaching experience encompasses students of all ages and abilities. My specialty is in classical voice, with a focus in opera and art song. I get a deep feeling of satisfaction from watching my students achieve their personal singing goals, and have sent many on to receive top ratings at vocal competitions and college music scholarships.

*** Lesson Detai
ls ***
My students describe me as "strict but nice". I encourage my students to set their expectations high, and then provide the tools to reach those goals over time. I love to work with musicians of all levels, as long as they are curious and committed to a "work hard/play hard" philosophy.

Repertoire will vary depending on your musical background and your interests and goals. I am comfortable teaching and performing folk song, art songs in German, French and Italian, and operatic arias. We will choose music together to find pieces that will aid your vocal development and that you enjoy singing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, music stands, rehearsal rooms, seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
My focus of my undergraduate and Master's studies was in operatic vocal performance. I also have experience with choral and vocal jazz.

Excellent ability to teach the new or accomplished vocalist.

Kristen is wonderful, she is able to make her instructions understandable to the beginner and inspire him to try new things. It's refreshing to see my young son focusing his style with a beautiful classical edge.

Amber A.

Quincy, MA

About Amber

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York and studied in the master’s program for computer science at Portland State University. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seou
l, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria).
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. I had taught in Seattle last few years and just moved to Boston. Currently I teach only at students' home but once I am settled here I will start studio teaching in one moth or two.

I am an adult who learns to play piano. Amber is my third teacher. I decided to settle with her as long as she won't move out of Seattle : ) She is very skilled, experienced, well-educated, humorous. I had a lot of fun in class. She definitely made me more passionate about piano learning. And of course, my skilled improved a lot. I decide to study as possible

Amber holds DMA degree in piano performance, which most teacher doesn't have. This makes her extremely qualified to teach students at any level. She really knows how to teach effectively. There was a song I had practiced for two months for my wedding but it still sounded wrong to me. I couldn't figured out what's wrong. Then I knew I need a teacher. That's when I started my class with Amber. She went through each line with me. Corrected my figuring to make it easier for me to play each key evenly. She taught me which part to use finger and which part to use hand, and how to relax fast between two notes. Those skills are so helpful for me. None of other teachers taught me before. Without her I will never do it.

The opportunity to write a review for Mathew presents me with an enormous challenge. Simply, how to coherently and concisely express my admiration and respect for his diverse professional body of work? It would require a writer far more gifted than I to adequately represent Mathew's gifts as a violinist, as a teacher, and overall musician. Suffice it to say that I am thrilled and honored to be asked to recommend him — which I do happily without reservation, and with the greatest affection.

Micah G.

Boston, MA

About Micah

I began playing the Piano at age 4, the Bassoon at age 11, and have been teaching students since I was 17. I recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music and began attending New England Conservatory for my masters degree this fall. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and skill levels, whether you are a beginner or a more advanced student looking to improve. A basic curriculum includes general performance skills, simple music theory and history, as well as music appreciation including exposure to new repertoire.  Each facet is intended to create well-rounded, self-sufficient musicia
ns and individuals.

I believe that each student’s instruction should be as unique as their personality. From serious to silly, I like to gauge my teaching style on the personality of each student and what they come to lessons hoping to accomplish.  Whether you are seeking to enjoy a new skill, engage in rigorous classical study, or anything in between, I can help you reach your goals!
