Kristen R.

Salt Lake City, UT

About Kristen

Hi! My name is Kristen and I am a 25 year old singer who loves music. I started my music career at the early age of 8 and haven't stopped singing since. Originally from Monterey, CA I grew up singing with my family. It has always been one of my favorite past times to sing with my dad. My family is one of the most important things to me, followed closely by music! Having been both an instrumentalist and vocalist, I feel it is important to not only know how to sing, but to be able to read music and understand what you are singing. After graduating with a music degree from BYU-I, I feel I ha
ve the tools to teach these and more.
Through my years as a musician, I have come to appreciate many different kinds of music ranging anywhere from Broadway to opera to Jazz, etc. I feel this gives me the ability to cater to my student's individual goals as musicians. One of my goals as a teacher is to help you to learn to sing what you love while giving you the correct foundation to build on. Music is supposed to be fun!
I believe self confidence is extremely important as a vocalist. "Stage fright" is common thing that holds us back from reaching our full potential. Singing with confidence makes you feel great, and sound even better. Sometimes it is all that's missing from a potentially amazing singer. I have helped many students overcome this road block and emerge filled with confidence and self assurance.

*** Lesson Details ***
Did you know that people can hear a smile in your voice? Smiling while singing actually produces a different sound that is pleasant to the ear. I want this experience to be fun for my students. That said, however, I believe self discipline is a very important aspect of music. I will encourage students to practice regularly and come prepared to learn. I will usually request that students bring a recording device so they can take home our lessons and practice. This also allows you to hear how you sound during lessons and reproduce(or improve) that at home.
During my lessons, we will cover topics ranging from improving your technical skills, basic singing principles, ear training, sight-reading, to theoretical knowledge. We will also discuss voice maintenance. That said, I feel it's important to get out of the lessons what you want, so I don't have a set curriculum. I tailor each lesson to the student.
All in all, I am a patient, fun-loving teacher who will work hard to bring out the very best in all my students. I will neither push too hard nor be too lenient as we strive to reach the goals we have set together.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano and music books provided

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide some music for the student. I would prefer that the student have access to a piano and bring a tape recorder and notebook to each lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Although I was classically trained and studied opera in college, my younger singing experience largely involved musical theatre. I have always been told I am a natural on stage. I strive to instill that confidence into my students because confidence really is half the battle.

Kristen was an excellent voice teacher for two of my daughters. She helped boost their confidence and willingness to share their singing talents by increasing their knowledge and abilities. She instructed them on how to harmonize and encouraged them to stretch themselves with different music. Kristen provided a fun and easy atmosphere for voice lessons. I would highly recommend her!

Eric is my son's drum instructor. He just barely turned 7, and struggles with focus and attention. To help him with this, I thought learning to read music and play an instrument would be quite beneficial. We first tried violin: He cried every time driving to lessons, so that ended fast. Then I thought piano, in our home. That idea didn't work either. Now we are with Eric, and my little guy is progressing. He likes Eric, which is (more than) half the battle.
Eric really does customize his lessons based on progress. He's great with my son, and makes it fun for him. He encourages him to practice at home every day, and pays close attention to the progress he makes each week. Eric also pays close attention to form, such as foot placement on the pedals, and obviously where his little hands should be, and remain, while playing.
Alex now is able to read (beginning) sheet music, and is working on his coordination, too. As his mom, I really believe this has turned out very well! We've been in lessons now for almost 2 months, which is much longer than violin and piano lasted. I can already tell my son will stay with it.
It's exciting for me to see the progress he's making. Each week, he seems to be more focused and stays on task. Of course he still has a ways to go for his age. But again, Eric is really patient, kind, supportive and wonderful with Alex.

Richard W.

Salt Lake City, UT

About Richard

I began playing music at the age of six. I started with the piano and saxophone but found my true passion, by age eight, in the guitar. I took private lessons from a great teacher for the first seven consecutive years of my study and further developed my knowledge and skills through self-directed study. I received my Undergraduate degree in Music Theory from the University of Utah. The pursuit of this degree allowed me to study many different musical aspects, including: composition, music history, ear training, sight reading and music technology, along with classical and jazz guitar studies. O
ver the years, through my education and practice, I have learned a great deal, not just about the guitar, but also ways to teach music and engage students in their pursuit of musical knowledge.

I played in my first music group when I was 17 and started composing and arranging music at that time. I have performed at numerous events and venues, eventually touring in the western U.S. I have a true passion for music and I love sharing this passion and teaching others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back instructor and teach in a relaxed, low-pressure environment. I offer private and small group lessons to students ages 6 and up. I like to joke around but I do expect my students to take their instrument seriously. Students are expected to practice the techniques and music outside of lesson time. I allow students to learn music they are interested in and teach them scales, chords, popular tunes and important performance techniques. Typically, after three months, a student will be able to play more proficient by themselves and in a group. He/she will be more confident about his/her guitar playing ability and overall music knowledge. For most students, after six months of regular lessons, they are able to begin composing simple pieces and have a good understanding of music composition.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I will teach in my living room, I have a piano, plenty of room for a parent to sit in on a lesson and a very comfortable environment.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy approaching any instrument from a theoretical base. This allows the student to understand the fundamentals of music and helps them explore the instrument of their choice to the fullest extent.

Rich is an excellent guitar & music teacher

Starting to study music and learn the guitar in my late 40's was pretty tough. After trying a community education class, and a different private instructor, I found Rich here on Take Lessons. After the first lesson I knew that I was going to learn a lot from him, and that I would enjoy the journey.

Rich is very knowledgeable about music, and he takes the time to teach it in a connected and practical way. As he says in his bio, he is laid back, but that does not mean that he is not serious about music and about teaching. For me his teaching approach is perfect, as he blends a deep understanding of all aspects of music with learning, and enjoying, the guitar.

My previous experience was focused mostly on learning chords, songs, and how to read tablature. On my own I discovered the Hal Leonard Method beginner book series, and started to teach myself to read music from it.

As I started my lessons with Rich he immediately did 3 things that impressed me. First he assessed what I knew, and what my goals were. He reviewed my progress in the Hal Leonard book and encouraged me to keep using it, making some key observations and suggestions during the first lesson that immediately helped me. And the most impressive thing was that he started teaching music theory from the very first lesson, showing me scales, introducing the Circle of Fifths, and demonstrating the application of understanding the principles, patterns, and theory. This made me very hungry to learn.

I don't want to just learn how to play songs on the guitar, rather I want to learn to make music with this instrument. That is what Rich is teaching. And his approach is very comfortable and fun. He adapted himself to my learning style and my needs from the beginning, and I can see myself continuing to learn from him for many years.

She continues to write, arrange and record as a freelance singer, and has appeared as the featured vocalist with groups like Children's Dance Theatre and Ririe-Woodbury among others.

Kait: "My goal with each student is to help them to become the very best they can be as singing performers. But in addition, I aim to lift their spirit during the time they spend here, so that when they leave for the day, after the work they've done, they feel better, more inspired, more empowered and more confident and driven than they did when they arrived at my door. Teaching and watching my students evolve as both artists and people is thrilling! I have the honor of watching them find themselves through music while they build truly lifelong friendships with the performing peers they meet here...they end up finding some of their 'kindred spirits' in life here, and THAT is golden."
