Pleasant Surprise

I currently have my daughter, age 8, enrolled in singing lessons with Ben. Previously, we had her starting lessons with the most popular teacher on this site, Lisa, with the highest number of reviews and were disappointed. She didn't seem to really invest in my daughters training. It seemed like a factory mill - student in, student out, next student in. I pulled her out after 5 lessons and went with Ben. It soon dawned on me that we had made a very good choice. Ben teaches the fundamentals first so that your child has a strong toolkit and foundation to succeed, which we weren't really getting from the previous instructor. He is very professional and takes what he does seriously and has made me feel that he cares about my daughter's progress. Additionally, he is affable and my daughter enjoys her lessons with him.

Professional, skilled instructor who has deep knowledge in music theory

I am a beginner in piano and have taken piano lesson from Ben for 2 months. Ben is a very professional instructor who has both the technical skills and a deep knowledge of musical theory. I learned not just the techniques for improving my piano performance skills, but also some intriguing music theory behind the pieces. The lessons are also well organized and it felt the hour goes by fairly swiftly.

Ben takes student's learning serious but still maintains a friendly and easy-going manner. The lessons usually provided at a musical instrument shop that is very convenient and cozy. Overall I am very satisfied with my experience.

Amazing technical knowledge...excellent instructor...very talented

From the first lesson, I could tell from Ben's singing and piano abilities that he was very talented with a lot of experience in music&music instruction. He is very clear with his instruction, extremely professional so it's so cool how down to earth he is. He even spent outside time helping me find a few things that would help advance my vocal abilities quicker. I really appreciate his time and hard work. Be advised: This man is SERIOUS about music (but that's a good thing)...
Erin W. Portland, OR

About Erin

I have a Master's in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, and over a decade of vocal training and performance experience. I teach voice lessons to kids, teenagers, and adults. My voice students range in ability from absolute beginner to intermediate with significant previous musical and vocal training. I have helped the beginning students learn to match pitch and read notes on the staff. My beginning and intermediate students learn to sing with purer vowels, increased breath support, and use a greater range. I also teach beginning piano to all ages. I teach students as young as 5 as long as they are able to stay focused for the duration of a half hour lesson. Most of my piano students are in the 7 -10 range, but I have taught some beginning adults as well, as a ...

Awesome Teacher!!

I have been learning from Erin for about 6 months, she has shown me how to do things with my voice I never thought I could ever do!! She is really patient, but holds me to a high standard as well. Lots of fun, and easy to be around too. Great experience!

An Exceptional Instructor!!!

Erin is a very knowledgeable instructor in both voice and piano. I have been taking lessons from her in my home for about 3 months now and I have made HUGE strides in my ability to sing on key (which was close to zero before I started lessons with her) and my ability to read music and play the piano which I gave up on when I was 8 years old.

Erin is professional, patient, understanding and very reliable and I would highly recommend her. Her valuable instruction has opened a whole new world for me!

Erin is just wonderful--helpful, supportive, and fun!

I came to Erin after several years away from singing, and she got me right back up to speed quickly and completely--better than ever, in fact!

We've worked on pieces that I've always wanted to work on, but she has also exposed me to all kinds of music that I hadn't known, and each piece has been exciting, challenging, and rewarding to sing.

Erin has always been completely reliable and professional, and an expert communicator. The few times she's ever given me feedback or instructions that I didn't understand immediately, she was able to communicate the idea in another way, and she's always completely open to questions. She's really just completely comfortable to talk to. Even when I struggled in her lessons from time to time, I never once felt frustrated or discouraged, and always came out on top.

Working with Erin, my technique, artistry, and confidence have all soared, and each lesson has been a joy. Erin is as knowledgeable as she is talented, and simply a delightful human being.

I'd give her three thumbs up if I had an extra hand!
Jon L. Portland, OR

About Jon

Out of all instruments, the sound of the violin is the closest to the human voice. Small wonder it is one of the oldest instruments still being played and it's tones can fit in to almost any style of music. Learning the violin from me goes far beyond technique. My training includes reading music notation, lead sheets, and playing by ear. All of these are skills that you can learn depending on what your goals are. A combination of these skills combined with technique on violin will give you a foundation of music knowledge that will serve you regardless of what style of music you want to play. Styles that I have studied specifically are: Classical, Irish, Bluegrass, Rock and Symphonic Metal. In addition to playing violin, I write and arrange music. My song "The Burning Plain" ...

Jon is a wonderful teacher! I have been playing violin all my life but never learned theory. I told Jon what I wanted to learn, and every week he has something prepared that helps me learn just what I want. He is patient and encouraging. When I bring something in that I want to work on, not on his lesson plan, we spend time on that too. I am very pleased with my lessons with Jon. And he's nice, fun, and friendly.

Jon is a wonderful violin teacher. As someone deep into my adulthood, who has wanted to take violin lessons my whole life, I finally embarked on this journey. I find Jon's style to be encouraging and supportive, while instructive and he clearly knows his stuff. Learning the violin is challenging and Jon makes it fun and breaks it down in a very accessible way.I have learned an enormous amount from him in a short time and have many "aha" moments as I learn to read the music and associate the sounds with the notes, which is something I did not know prior to my lessons with Jon.
If you are considering taking lessons with Jon, take the plunge. Believe me, you will benefit greatly from the experince.
Thank you Jon.

Awesome Instructor!

Jon is a pretty nice guy all the way around. He's patient, listens, and is able to explain music terms to me relating to the violin on a level I can understand. I have only had a few lessons with him, but already I have learned tons.

Go Jon!

Jane is an excellent instructor. She is wonderfully enthusiastic about music and makes her students feel the same way. My daughter started with piano lessons but eventually switched to harmonica... no problem for Jane! In addition to the lessons, Jane recorded my daughter's music - very cool! - so now I have copies of to listen to. She comes up with interesting music that appeals to my daughter and keeps her engaged. She researches different artists to demonstrate different ways the same instrument can be played to give my daughter a broader perspective of what she can do with her instrument. Jane is a terrific teacher. We've been with her for years, from grade school up through high school, and wouldn't have anyone else.

Expanded my range and strengthened my voice.

Don has a lot of experience, worked well around my schedule, and is very professional.
From day one he gave me exercises and study material to take home. Due to his experience he could pinpoint my weak points and give me something to work on for next week. If I couldn't make it on my lesson day Don was very open and helpful with rescheduling.
Don is friendly, punctual, and can I say experienced one more time :) I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to expand there music knowledge.
