About Barbara

Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills. I am an original New Yorker, but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I would like to write a follow up review about Ms. Barbara.

I have been taking singing lessons for about 5 months with Ms. Barbara.
When I came to Ms. Barbara I had a few hurdles I needed help and assistance in. The end goal was to be able to have my performance on stage. Ms. Barbara composed the right vocal exercises for me to practice so my voice becomes stronger and more stable, that the breath taking is correct and will allow me to hold the notes i need better and even sing high notes.

I went on stage feeling happy, excited and confident. My performance was a success!
Thank You Ms. Barbara!!

Simeon K. Chesapeake, VA

About Simeon

Degrees held: Indiana University Jacobs School of Music - MM, PD Oberlin College and Conservatory - BM I teach private piano lessons, music theory classes, and accompanying. Students of all ages/levels are welcome. My teaching method primarily focuses on the process of learning music. Students are encouraged to make manageable goals for each lesson so that they can feel a sense of achievement throughout the entire learning process. The smaller goals keep the students motivated constantly enabling them to become a better musician. By focusing on the process of learning, students are learning a set of skills that will enable them to learn pieces quicker and allow for a more rewarding end product. They also are able to apply these learning skills to many different areas of study, which ...

Robert S. Virginia Beach, VA

Along with learning an instrument you must also learn how to share what you've learned on the stage. I have years of experience performing. I can help train you to gain confidence in yourself in front of a big group of people.

About Robert

I've had ample experience in music performance - touring around the world playing shows in places like Indonesia, Russia, and Japan - was a touring member for the Norfolk based rock group, MAE (Capitol Records, Tooth & Nail Records). My expertise is piano but I have a multi-instrumental understanding of music (piano, guitar, and drums). *** Lesson Details *** My goal with each student is to help instill a desire and passion to explore the deeper side of music and how it can bring you closer to matters of the soul. I teach the fundamentals as theory is crucial to understanding music, but let me teach you how to feel the true emotions in music. Each student ...

Robert has the great ability to combine theory with fun! He quickly assessed where I needed the most work and tailored his lessons to those areas. He's very professional, positive, and encouraging. I would highly recommend Robert to anyone interested in learning or improving upon their piano skills!

Robert is absolutely wonderful! My 7 year old daughter is autistic and her attention span is very short. Robert is always very patient with her and praises her learning. He took the initiative to research different ways to approach her piano lessons so her learning was more effective. He is punctual and respectful to everyone in the house (including the needy french bulldog) He is very good at what he does. What a great person to shape the future of music!

Rachel G. Hampton, VA

I have a violin performance degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and I have been teaching and helping students conquer stage fright since 2002! I perform regularly with my internationally touring Celtic group, Tullamore, as well as in smaller venues as a singer-songwriter. In addition to violin, I teach guitar, viola, and piano, as well as voice. My studio is committed to supporting students through performances, holding up to 3 recitals per year (including a more relaxed open mic at a coffeehouse!). Call and schedule with me today!

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I have been taking theory lessons from Rachel for several months now to help learn the guitar. Learning theory can be very complex and quite a daunting task for a new music student. What I really appreciate is Rachel's patience and ability to try different approaches with me if a certain method doesn't quite resonate. She communicates and asks questions about the material she's going over to ensure that I'm comprehending what she's teaching. Another aspect that I'm very appreciative of is that Rachel gives me small, bite sized "chunks" of information that is easier to digest so that I'm not overwhelmed with learning too much at once. I intend to continue my musical journey with Rachel and also take on vocal lessons with Rachel as time permits. Her personality is very warm and personable and her commitment to helping others pursue their music goals really shines through. I consider Rachel to be a very well rounded musician and a master at her craft. I admire her musicianship and hope to attain her level of confidence and abilities as I pursue my own musical journey!!!

I have always wanted to learn to play the viola but time has always been a fickle mistress with me so the viola I bought in late 2014 barely got played because of nursing school. I had an online violin lesson with Taylor Davis to support her new album and it gave me the idea to start taking lessons through skype. I spent my time looking through all the instructors on takelessons and chose Rachel because she plays the five string violin, which helps her understand both worlds and what can cross to violas and what can't. I took the plunge and signed up for lessons with her and it was one of the best decisions I've made.

Rachel is very knowledgeable and willing to work around a schedule, she's very quick to praise you when you get something right and also quick to correct to prevent bad habits from forming. Due to my inability to take lessons in real life I chose to take lessons from her but now that I am taking lessons from her I don't think I'd change to an in person instructor if I had the option.

Thank you Rachel for taking on someone who loves classical music and no idea how to play and starting me on the journey of one day playing the Walton viola concerto and the Vieuxtemps viola sonata.

Mr. Jeff is so talented, and works very well will children. My 12yr old thinks he's awesome. After each lesson my son talks about what he learned with excitement. Before leaving each lesson, Mr. Jeff will ask my son and me to give him feedback and if there is anything we would like to change/do, just let him know. And forget about talented, that speaks for itself once he picks up those sticks. But most of all we appreciate his patience and great instruction. Totally feel lucky to have found him. Definitely a prize Instructor, that I would recommend hands down.

Music Criticism: How To Handle a Critical Audience
Years ago, I heard my first band would be featured in the local paper and I was so excited to read the article. I hurried home to read it and found that the short blurb was far from complimentary.
