Chris W.

Oklahoma City, OK

About Chris

I have been instructing students of all ages since graduating from college. Having performed professionally in jazz combos, big bands, rock and funk bands, and as a soloist, I am well-versed in all styles of music. I was also a graduate assistant in the area of solfege and ear training as well as jazz trumpet while working on a Master's in Jazz Studies at Cleveland State University and Florida State University. I am currently the brass instructor and Head of Music at the Long Lake Camp for the Arts. I have also been a lead trumpet player for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

I understand that no
t all students are planning to become professional musicians. It is my belief that it is my job as a music educator to provide the student with the opportunity to progress to the level they want and the tools needed to do so. I provide the vital information needed to make significant improvements and then it is up to the student to master this information. Lessons not only teach music but also valuable lessons like time management and work ethic which will help in other areas of their lives.

*** Lesson Details ***
My experience in drum and bugle corps has given me an appreciation for the fundamentals of brass playing: breathing, mouthpiece buzzing, long tones, flexibility, and articulation. I incorporate different exercises from popular method books like Arban and Clarke as well as my own method book, 101 Lip Slurs, that address these fundamentals. I also teach standard repertoire that every student should learn and other pieces just for fun. Each lesson is customized based on the student's needs and goals. Over the years I have created my own method which includes studies from Arban, Schlossberg, Clarke, Cichowicz, and other popular brass methods. I teach each student differently, but relay the same concepts. I cover what I believe are the most valuable areas in brass playing and address each need of the student. I give truly custom tailored lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Along with the trumpet, I use a stereo system to play high quality recordings for students. I also use the piano as a teaching tool and to accompany students.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling to students homes to teach, I will bring my instrument along with other materials to teach with.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz and classical trumpet and trombone performance.

About Michele

I am a passionate cellist and instructor who loves working with students of all ages and abilities and helping them discover a love for music as well. I graduated in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education with a string emphasis, and a Master's degree in Cello Performance in May 2016. My teachers include Jenna Dalbey of the Tetra String Quartet, Thomas Landschoot of the Sonoran Chamber Music Series, and Jonathan Ruck of the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble. I have been playing cello for 14 years and during that time I accompanied a choir during a high school festival, performed
with the ASU Symphony, performed two solo cello recitals in college and had quartet coaching with the St. Lawarence String Quartet and Julliard Quartet. In addition to my cello experience, I also have been playing violin for 7 years and viola for 3.

Michele is a wonderful teacher. I was worried about my preteen daughter because she is so shy but Michele is so much fun. She gently encourages, is full of smiles and praise and she brings out the little musician in my child. I'm not sure if best instructor is fair since it is our first time with private lessons but I it would be really hard to beat this one and we don't intend to try.
