Many people want to be able to play their musical instrument by ear training. An important part of ear training is learning the intervals (musical distance) between notes you hear. This is something that got touched on when I was a music major in school & college. I taught myself intervals related to common songs I've heard. By applying this knowledge to the guitar, my fingers will automatically go to the right notes I am "hearing in my head" without really thinking about it...it bypasses my intellect. This can really help decide which position to play a certain musical phrase on a guitar, for example.

On an intermediate level, I can train your ear to tell the difference between major chords, minor chords & more complex chords. I can show you how to find the first note or chord of a song. Then you can learn how to tell what the next chords are in a song, based on its relationship with the first chord.

From hearing individual notes in a string quartet piece or a vocal run, to picking out different instruments and different effects in a pop song, to anticipating complex harmony, I can help you improve your ear in any way you would like as a musician. I utilize my experience as a multi-instrumentalist to create a custom-curriculum for all levels.

Students can expect to:

1. Be able to associate a series of notes and/or chords with concrete application to an instrument (guitar or piano preferred).

2. Be able to understand from where melodies and chords originate through study of key centers, relevant scale tones, intervals and eventually, interval recognition. Knowledge of intervals is THE MOST ESSENTIAL aspect of ear training.

3. Be able to understand the mind of the composer in question as one uses songs as vehicles of analysis.

4. More easily be able to memorize melodies and chords because of a more increased association factor relating to why the notes and chords appear in a particular order.

5. Be able to have more confidence in a musical performance or recording project because of a more in-depth perspective.

6. Be able to be more creative because of a deeper perception of actually understanding the music in your head that needs to come to life.
