"Melissa was a great instructor for knitting. She walks you through each step and makes sure you completely understand the process. She walks you through c
asting a stitch, different stitches needed for each project, and how to go back and correct a dropped stitch. Her lessons are thorough and great for building the foundation needed for knitting well. She makes it simple enough for a beginner to understand and does so with humor and charm. I highly recommend Melissa!"

About Melissa
Hi there! I'm Melissa, and I am a fashion design and sewing teacher on Staten Island. I have been teaching children and adults how to sew since 2014. I've been sewing since I was a child, and I've been teaching since 2007.
I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.
After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is

After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is
yours. I'm not the kind of teacher that is going to make you spend hours mastering a straight hem because frankly, that's really boring. I want you to learn while working on projects you care about
My experience includes;
-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects.
-I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12.
-I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format.
-I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center
-I am a resident costumer for Sundog Theatre.
-I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy
-I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies
Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn students, but please inquire before booking. I have locations in 10306 and 10309 that can accommodate students if you don't wish to learn in home.
My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, four sewing machines, 2 professional mannequins, and a closet full of fabric and notions!

About Cathy
I teach sewing, mostly, but also design clothing and knitwear. I can drape and draft patterns, hand spin and weave, embroider, make lace, style wigs, and am an all-around crafty gal. I graduated with a degree in American Studies from Mount Holyoke College. My background includes over 20 years of building theatrical costumes, wardrobing Broadway shows and regional productions, restoring and reproducing museum textiles and costumes, and dressing the runway shows of NY Fashion Week. I believe we are what we make and glitter is evil. I live in New York City with her husband and their very spoiled Tibetan Spaniel mix Ollie.
I am currently working toward the completion of a Certificate in the Appraisal of Fine and Decorative Arts from NYU.
I am highly conscientious, focused, and competent, and well as thoroughly charming.

About Rosanne V.
CloseAbout Rosanne
I am a life-long crocheter, having learned from my grandmother and the Girl Scouts as a child. I am beginning my coursework for certification as a Crochet Master by the Crochet Guild of America this fall. I can work from written instructions as well as charts and often create my own patterns. I have used all types of yarn from the bulkiest roving wool to the finest thread. Currently my focus is on baby clothes, toys and blankets - new generation coming in to my family! One of my primary life pleasures is gifting my creations.
I have enjoyed teaching crochet informally throughout my life to friends and friends of friends and am always thrilled when the skill takes root in another. I currently belong to a few local crochet / knit circles and attend CGOA conferences as regularly as possible.

NOTE: I am right-handed. It is sometimes difficult for a left-handed person to learn from a right-handed crocheter.

About LILY Q.
CloseAbout LILY
I am a fashion designer/instructor and former social worker. I am very patient with students and passionate about sewing. I get excited watching students build skills gradually from basic through advanced level techniques.
Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For six years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

Whether you want to begin knitting or crocheting, or already love to, there’s always something new to learn. I love all aspects of knitting and crochet - color, texture, and creation. And I love sharing all this with my students. I personally enjoy the math of it, and can help make it easy if math is not your “thing”.
Would you like to learn basic skills, hone current ones , or enhance your experience with new techniques? If you're in the middle of a project and need help, or have specifice technique(s) you'd like to work on, consider booking a 15 minute class, or a series of them.
Choose from these subjects, or tell me what you’d like to work on:
• Reading the Yarn Ball Band - Why the information on it is helpful and important
• How to use Ravelry - A knitting community full of useful information
• Fiber Math…Yes you can

I have been teaching since 2012 and am available to teach lessons online and in NYC. I learned teaching skills from some of the most loved and respected teachers in well-known stores, teaching venues, and events. My company has been featured in Elle, Teen Vogue, Marie Claire, Real Simple, Women’s Health, Seventeen, Self Magazine, Lou Lou, & Time Out print publications and online at Chictopia, Ok Magazine, Refinery 29, Runway Hippie & Daily Candy to name a few. Our collections have been sold everywhere from Barney's Tokyo, American Rag CIE, ASOS and Henri Bendel in NYC.
My personal passion is knitwear and crocheting, but I firmly believe I firmly believe that great technique is essential to any fiber art. I'm very personable and excited to teach people of all ages this functional, creative skill in a fun, laid back environment! I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better crocheter and designer!
