John C.

Plainfield, NJ 07060

Private Saxophone Teacher

I play and teach alto, tenor and baritone saxophone. I focus on getting my students to play in tune. Tone production is the first step. If you have a good tone people will listen to you. I work with tuners continually. My students are able to sound good immediately and that is crucial in their development.

You'll be playing songs in no time! With over eight years of teaching experience with students of all ages, I know how to tailor your experience to you or your child's goals and experience level. I believe that we get the most joy from playing our instrument by developing strong fundamentals so that new musical challenges are enlightening rather than frustrating.

About Julian

I began teaching in-home lessons to K-12 and adult students in 2010. Since then I have:
1) Taught thousands of fun and engaging lessons to over 150 students
2) Helped high school students attain successful college music auditions
3) Had students on saxophone AND clarinet place successfully in All-State and All-County Honors Bands and Gifted and Talented Ensembles

Whether your student is excelling and wants new musical challenges to stay engaged or you think they could enjoy music but are struggling to keep up, I have experience with that situation. I am a passionate performer myself, and I released my debut jazz album in early 2018. I truly believe that music is one of the greatest sources of joy in the world.

I played the sax through high school and then stopped playing until I retired ~ 4 years ago. I started lessons with Julian when he lived nearby and have continued with "skype" lessons since he moved out of the area. He's a great teacher: motivational, thorough knowledge of both classical and jazz, kind, good sense of humor, and a good communicator. I highly recommend him.

I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email.

Saxophone is such a fun instrument to play because it is all about style. The more energy and dynamics used, the greater sounding a piece will be. In addition to focusing on technique, I teach to understand the passion behind the song so that it's not only fun to listen to, but also to play.

About Jacob

I am a multi-instrumentalist from Upstate New York. I started playing guitar and saxophone 10 years ago and simply couldn’t stop! Over the years, I picked up ukulele, clarinet, mandolin, flute, among others, studied voice at Ithaca College as part of their BFA MT program, and have become a singer/songwriter and recording artist.
As a teacher, I am all about loving and performing the music. Learning instruments can be hard and technique is very important, but if we don’t cultivate a passion for music, why are we playing it at all? The most engaging and successful artists are those who put themselves into their music and fully perform it, not just play it. My goal is to keep his classes stress free and focused on enjoying the passion of performance while pushing towards more challenging and exciting material.
