I am an active professional classical and operatic singer with nine years of teaching experience. My students include a range of levels and ages who vary in musical aspirations and sing in many different styles, including opera, art song, jazz, blues, pop, and musical theater. My students have gone on to sing on Broadway, pursue music and theater degrees, compete and win competitions. Many of my students also study piano or guitar in order to increase musicianship and independence in study. Students are given every opportunity to become well-rounded, performing musicians when studying with me. I am a friendly, open-minded, enthusiastic musician who loves teaching others!

I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected from the western classical rep based on the student's learning needs and with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.
To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.
Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.
• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.
• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.
• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.
• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

As a professional opera singer and recitalist, Rachel uses her first-hand experience in the business to guide her students and to teach them healthy vocal technique. Her students find her to be energetic, warm, and one of her biggest goals is to make her students feel more empowered when they leave than when they arrived. Music is a transformative art form and she hopes to enrich her student’s lives.
Learning proper singing technique is essential for the health of singers of all ages and genres. And YES! Everyone can sing! Rachel personalizes each lesson to her students' needs and provides a safe and fun atmosphere that is essential to creative learning. Musicianship, better intonation, breath control, support, tone quality, freedom of sound, and a love of music are all topics covered in voice lessons.
Last spring, she completed her Master’s of Music at Rice University, under the instruction of acclaimed voice teacher, Dr. Stephen King. There, she performed the role of Lady Billows in their 2014 production of Britten’s Albert Herring. Rachel made her operatic debut with Rice University in their fall of 2012 production of Volpone as Celia. With Rice University, she was also featured in their scenes programs as Mimi from La Bohème, Ilia from Idomeneo, Rosalba from Florencia en el Amazonas, and Mrs. Fiorentino from Street Scene.

Rachel completed her Bachelor’s of Music at Mannes College in 2012. There, she performed in their Opera Scenes Workshop and their Rise of Modernism Festival, singing Canciones populares Españolas by Manuel de Falla.

I have years of performing and teaching experience, and am constantly learning and growing in both fields. I have sung a variety of roles in opera and musical theater throughout New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Louisiana, as well as solo work in Boston's Symphony Hall and the Museum of Art. I also taught choir on top of voice/piano lessons.

I believe it is important students feel they can communicate openly and honestly during lessons. As with many learning processes, singing requires practice, patience, determination, and enthusiasm!
As a singer/performer:
I enjoy singing in a variety of 'classical' genres including Opera, Art Song, Early Music, and Broadway. While the majority of my performing experience centers in opera and music theater, I also enjoy solo recitals, chamber music, and choral performances.
Originally I'm from Columbus Ohio. I obtained a Bachelor of Music at Ohio University, and a Master of Music at Texas Tech University. When not singing or teaching, I enjoy tai chi, meditation, making natural soap, cats, and being outdoors in nature.
As a bass opera singer and professional voice over artist, I am dedicated to creating a healthy and beautiful sound with my own voice and the voices of my students. I will not come into our lessons saying there is a single way to sing. In fact, many genres require a great deal of varying vocal techniques and stylized voices. What I will do is help to lay a foundation in healthy singing so that you feel comfortable singing any genre. We will start by ensuring that your breath and vowel placement feels comfortable and from there move into repertoire of your choosing or some that I recommend based upon your interests. I have been teaching for 30 years and have students on broadway, rap and pop singers , touring artists, school children perfyin school plays, and my local private students perform with me all over the city. Hello! My name is Alexa and I am a professional singer and actor in the Philadelphia area. I received my BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of the Arts and I specialize in Musical Theatre voice and performance, though my training and expertise also delves into classical, pop, and jazz. I have been teaching both group and private voice lessons for the past 5 years, and I currently teach through a studio where I have 8 private voice students. My teaching style is extremely tailored to the individual student and focuses on their strengths and interests. Vocal technique and health is my main priority, but I love helping the student find ways to ignite their inner joy while maintaining vocal health. I also take the performance aspect of singing into account when teaching, and I use the passion of the overall performance to inform the voice and solidify the vocal technique.
