Playing the violin is easy, once you realize that it is a kind of singing! Although it has perhaps the most complicated technique of any instrument, it is simple once you understand the focus of the technique.

About Stephen
I have been playing music on the violin since the age of 7, composing since I was 14, and playing and performing on the guitar since I was 18. I've written a lot of music, and this past spring had works performed in Virginia and two in Manhattan.

I have taught music for over 15 years, in colleges, music schools and privately. One thing that I have noticed is that, with more experience, I have a lot more fun--and so do my students.

I don't have much to add after what you've already read. I love teaching and hope my enthusiasm will be contagious. You are free to record a video your lessons to help you practice more efficiently at home and to tell me whatever else you need to help you learn. Every teacher wants their students to practice as much as possible but I focus on how to help you learn quickly because many of you have very busy lives. Whatever time you have I'll help you make the most of it.

About Gregor
I perform regularly at Carnegie Hall with Orchestra of St. Luke's, have performed and recorded with David Bowie (Heathen), play lots of chamber music and contemporary music concerts and have toured extensively but always lived in NYC. While I studied with Jascha Heifetz protege Erick Friedman to get my BM and MM from Manhattan School of Music,, Charlie Castleman at The Quartet Program and Chris Lee, concertmaster of NJ Symphony, my teaching is based on what I learned as a performing musician in NYC. Working with great players here showed me what they all had in common versus what were just my teacher's idiosyncrasies. Using your body efficiently to avoid injury is at the core of what I teach. Playing well in your 20's is entirely different than having learned how to avoid injury and play well in your 50's. I teach anyone from beginners o
f all ages to young professionals preparing for auditions to older people who always wanted to do this and just need someone to spark their curiosity.

Gregor was terrific to work with! He has had so much experience and teaches in a very personal and dynamic manner. He can really address the root of many issues in playing and take personal differences in consideration. I was very happy he had so much experience using the Alexander Method and adapting it to violin playing. This is what you need to set yourself up for a lifetime of playing! While I studied primarily classical music, he also has lots of experience in many other genres as well.

I briefly studied with Gregor when I lived in the NYC Metro area. He is one of the best teachers I've had the privilege of studying with over the years. My lessons were tailored to my goals, and Gregor was committed to helping me learn as much as possible, while being incredibly down to earth. He is simply a world-class teacher, and someone I was very fortunate to meet. It was a pleasure and privilege taking lessons from him, and I cannot recommend him enough to aspiring violinists and violists.

We will start off our lessons with introductions to the violin. In addition to posture and being able to appropriately hold and play the violin, you will develop a thorough understanding of basic music theory. We will incorporate music theory (reading notes, note values, notation, etc.) to every lesson. You will typically use Suzuki books to learn and develop different violin techniques. We will also spend a lot of time working on etudes/scales to compliment those newly learned techniques.

About Erica
Check out my website at: ericaquach.com

I was introduced to the violin at the early age of 5. I quickly found a deep passion for the violin and would play all day and night, much to my neighbors' dismay. I joined the NY Young Musicians' Ensemble, where I was given the opportunity to travel to Greece to play at numerous concert halls. I attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School as an instrumental major and took music theory/ history and ear training courses along with daily orchestra classes. At Hamilton College, I joined the orchestra and quartet ensemble, appropriately named, “Hamstrings”. I was asked to join the saxophone ensemble in 2015 and also took upon a Teacher Assistant position for a Jazz MOOC. In addition to my vast musical opportunities, I have also had many experiences working with children in education. After graduating
from Hamilton College, I taught both 1 on 1 and group violin classes at Real Brave Music School in Queens, which allowed me to incorporate the Suzuki method into my own curriculum for beginner violinists.
In November of 2016, I moved to Chongqing, China to work at Musicool Music & Art, where I was a Music Instructor, an English- Chinese Translator, and the Education Program Coordinator. I had the wonderful opportunity to develop comprehensive and innovative curricula to match the needs of multiple age groups, lead classes in both English and Mandarin Chinese, and assist other teachers in accurately translating class content. I was also responsible for overseeing program/curriculum development for the rest of the company, ensuring that each class had engaging and interactive elements. Please contact me for more information!

I love teaching adults because we can build up meaningful relationships and have intriguing conversations through music! I am fully equipped to teach from absolute beginners to semi-professionals who had chosen a non-music career path. Let's work together to achieve your goal, and make beautiful music.

About Keiko
I served as a violinist of the Attacca Quartet, a NY-based string quartet that has been traveling all over the world from 2005 to 2019 In addition to concertizing, my colleagues and I teach students of all levels wherever we go; we have given lessons, masterclasses and lectures in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ireland, Australia, Japan, UAE... good thing we all speak the universal language of humanity: music.

I grew up in Yokohama, Japan, but I decided that I was ready to explore the world when I was finishing up the 10th grade. I moved to New York to pursue a musical life and career. I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, as well as Artist Diploma in String Quartet Studies from The Juilliard School.

I have been teaching students of all ages since 2005. Many of them were young children who
simply enjoy playing the violin, but I have had several students win domestic and international competitions. While I enjoyed the experience of being a part of numerous children's lives tremendously, I am slowly moving towards teaching adults because my busy tour life does not allow for me to be in town all the time.

With my adult students, I often encourage them to work on a solo repertoire of an appropriate level, as well as an ensemble piece that would allow us to develop our musicianship. I am very friendly and casual, but if you ask me to, I can be very tough (I was raised by a tiger mom.)

If you are a beginner and need help with reading music in general, don't worry- I teach a course called "Ear Training" at Juilliard, so that can be a part of our lessons as well.

I look forward to meeting you and making music together!

I've been teaching & performing for ten years as both a violinist and violist. I hold a Master's Degree from McGill University and my Bachelor's from Indiana University in Music. I'm also Grand Prize winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the largest competition of its kind in North America.

I love to teach and believe that there are many ways to learn, but that the best ways are always the ones which are most enjoyable!

I encourage my students to pursue their musical passions and to be open about what they want to learn and what motivates them to play their best. I love helping students of all levels achieve and exceed their goals!

About Evan
I'm a career string quartet musician who loves both performing and teaching. I graduated with a Master of Music degree from McGill University in Viola Performance.

I've been lucky to have many amazing opportunities so far: I've performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar; in Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan; and in Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of Mozart!) as a member of the Milton String Quartet. I've also toured the USA and played in many parts of Canada. My favorite experience was winning the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the largest competition of its kind in North America!

My teaching experience is quite varied. I currently teach group classes to 3rd-5th graders here in NYC public schools. I've taught chamber music to teenagers in Indiana University's Summer String Academy and to adult lea
rners in Montreal.

To me, music is about community, and getting to play great music with close friends or family is one of the most rewarding experiences.

I also tutor chess: I grew up playing the game and my parents ran a chess club at my elementary school in rural Maine. Chess was pure fun growing up but now I see how valuable of a tool it is for teaching logic, strategy and critical thinking! I won the U.S. Open unrated division at the age of 16 with a USCF rating of 1600 and have competed in a number of other tournaments.

Violin is a complex art, one that takes many years to develop, but can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Despite its challenges, love for the violin and music should never take a back seat in a lesson, That is what I will focus on. Nevertheless, there are methods and techniques crucial to violin playing that I will also keep at the forefront. At the end of the day, students have their own unique voice that I will try to nurture while at the same time teach them the fundamental tools to achieve it. To all of you, I wish you best of luck with violin and hope you can join me in making music!
