My beginning students use the Suzuki Violin Method books and later transition to a series of étude books and repertoire selected depending on the student's level. I teach beginning students a modified version of the Suzuki method but incorporate note-reading and theory skills from the very beginning. I focus on a relaxed and natural hold of the violin and bow to avoid tension and technical problems that can lead to injury. Students who learn to hold their instruments correctly progress more quickly and are better able to express themselves artistically. I work with my students on development of their aural skills, concentrating on pitch accuracy and a sensitive ear. I accept violin students ages three and older pending an evaluation by myself and the student's parent of the student's maturity. If we decide that the student is too young to begin lessons, you will receive a refund from TakeLessons.

My name is very unusual, so some students have difficulty pronouncing it. You pronounce the "y" as in "sky" and the "the" as in "breathe". My name has only one syllable. Don't worry if you're still having trouble with it--I'll help you out at our first lesson.

I grew up in southeast Michigan and have been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I started violin lessons when I was three years old and at five I became the youngest student ever accepted into the studio of James Waring, now-retired violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Under Mr. Waring, I developed a solid virtuoso technique and worked on chamber music as well as solo and concerto repertoire for the violin. While I was an undergraduate student at Westminster Choir College, I continued my violin study with Dr. Mia Wu.

After six years of violin st
udy, I added piano lessons. I studied with Catherine Rollin, an internationally-known teacher and composer. Ms. Rollin's practical approach to technique and musicianship has been extremely influential in my own teaching, and I use her exercises and compositions with my students. I studied a wide range of repertoire with Ms. Rollin but my very favorite pieces were those by Bach, Chopin, and Debussy.

I sang in choirs throughout my childhood and began taking voice lessons in high school. I eventually decided to study voice performance at Westminster Choir College, where I completed my Bachelor of Music degree in 2004 and my Master of Music degree in vocal pedagogy and performance in 2008. While a student at Westminster, I performed the soprano roles of Ifigenia in Handel's Oreste, Amy in Mark Adamo's Little Women, and Janthe in Heinrich Marschner's Der Vampyr. I have coached with Daniel Beckwith, J. J. Penna, and Dalton Baldwin, and was privileged to sing in the Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir under Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt. With the Westminster Choir, I recorded the album Heaven to Earth and performed in Lakmé and I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. in Charleston, South Carolina. I also performed Handel's Messiah with Sir Neville Marriner and Nicholas McGegan, Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Sir Michael Tilson Thomas and Lorin Maazel, Berlioz's Requiem with Charles Dutoit, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Lorin Maazel.

I have taught in the Princeton area since 2008, maintaining a studio of about twenty-five voice, piano, and violin students. In addition, I sing as cantor and soprano section leader at Queenship of Mary Catholic Church. I live with my husband, Jerome, in Plainsboro and I love to knit, crochet, and sew when I'm not teaching or performing.

My goal in teaching is to foster a love of music and a passion for the arts. I focus on developing my students as musicians in general and on a relaxed technique that will allow for the best possible artistic expression.

*** Studio Policies ***

Tuition

There are 38 lessons each year, scheduled from September through June. The schedule will be distributed at the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year and may be found on the TakeLessons website.

30-minute lessons     $34.00
45-minute lessons     $45.00
60-minute lessons     $56.00

Tuition encompasses lesson time and overhead costs including lesson preparation, office hours, event preparation, and studio recital performance opportunities. Lesson lengths are recommended by the teacher based on student age, level, and availability. Tuition is collected through TakeLessons.

Attendance

Just as strong attendance is expected in school, strong attendance is expected at music lessons. As a courtesy of the studio, one make-up lesson is offered per student per academic year.  Make-up lessons will be scheduled in late June. The studio shall not assume responsibility for the student's absences outside of this allotted absence.

In the event of a student cancellation, the teacher is to be contacted via email, text message, or phone call for notification as soon as the student is aware of the cancellation.

In anticipation of absence, students/parents may choose from the following options to facilitate continued progress:
• The student/parent may send the teacher a video recording (i.e. via DropBox). The teacher can provide an electronic critique, utilizing the lesson time to watch, listen, and write a critique and assignment for the week.
• The student/parent may elect to use the *Student Swap Directory.

If the student stays home from school or work on their lesson day due to contagious illness, or was excused early from school due to contagious illness, it is requested they not attend their lesson. The teacher has the authority to excuse a contagiously ill student from their lesson. In these situations, make-ups will be offered upon request outside of the allotted absence.

In the event the teacher needs to cancel due to an unforeseen circumstance, she shall notify students and parents of the cancellation as soon as possible through email and/or phone.

For every cancellation made by the teacher, two make-up date options will be offered to the student. The student is to select one. If the student cancels or does not attend the scheduled make-up lesson, the lesson will be marked as missed. The teacher reserves the right to offer a credit or electronic critique in lieu of the above-mentioned make-up lesson in appropriate circumstances.

*Student Swap Directory

Students/parents may elect to be a part of the Student Swap Directory, designed to offer possible opportunities for students to swap lessons in anticipation of a lesson conflict. Parents/students are responsible for arranging their lesson swaps. If a lesson swap is made, it is the responsibility of the parent/student to inform the teacher.

To be included in the Student Swap Directory, a permission slip, provided by the teacher, will need to be completed and returned to the teacher, allowing the student’s name(s), parent’s name(s), lesson day(s), time(s), and length(s), and email and phone contact information to be shared.  The Student Swap Directory will be distributed at the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Weather Emergencies

Lessons will generally not be held in the studio on days when West Windsor-Plainsboro Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. If roads are cleared and passable by the time of the student’s lesson, they may attend their lesson at their own risk. If there is­­­ a one- or two-hour delay, lessons will still be held according to the lesson schedule.
 
When West Windsor-Plainsboro Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Google Chat, Skype, or FaceTime lessons will be conducted from the studio. The teacher will contact the students/parents to arrange the lesson. This will prioritize safety and will also allow students to adhere to the lesson schedule for optimized progress. Laptops, iPads, Tablets, iPhones/Smartphones, etc. may be used when the camera and microphone is adjusted and set in view of the student at the piano. Students are to have their music, theory book, assignment book, and a pencil ready to go. Students are to sign on approximately 5 minutes prior to their lesson time, with all settings appropriately adjusted. They are to call at their lesson time.

In lieu of a Google Chat, Skype, or FaceTime lesson, students may opt to send the teacher a video recording (i.e. via DropBox). The teacher can provide an electronic critique, utilizing the lesson time to watch, listen, and write a critique and assignment for the week.

Practicing

Regular practice is essential to musical development. Lessons will include the development of effective practice skills so that students are clear on how to practice. Practice builds muscle strength, coordination, problem-solving skills, focus, self-discipline, a sense of accomplishment, and the enjoyment of being able to make beautiful music through the process. In addition, the student will greatly improve their musical proficiency. The teacher will include written practice instructions in the student’s notebook. These instructions are to be read carefully each week to maximize effective practice time.

Students should practice a minimum of 5 days per week and the amount of daily practice should correlate with the length of their lessons. Students taking 30-minute lessons should practice 30 minutes a day, students taking 45-minute lessons should practice 45 minutes a day, and students taking 60-minute lessons should practice one hour each day. Practice time should be divided into 2-3 focused sessions with specific goals set for each practice session.

Repertoire

When new repertoire or a method book is assigned, it will be the responsibility of the student/parent to purchase it. Music may be purchased at Music and Arts in Mercer Mall on US Highway 1 in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Music may also be ordered online at Amazon and other websites recommended by the teacher.

Termination

Any student/parent wishing to terminate lessons must do so in writing. The termination will go into effect at the start of the following billing cycle. The studio shall not assume financial responsibility for the remainder of the billing cycle during which termination occurs. Borrowed music/materials will need to be returned to the teacher at the conclusion of study.

Additional Information

Violin students MUST bring their own instruments to the first lesson. Piano students must have their own pianos when lessons begin. An acoustic piano is strongly recommended, even for beginning students, but a full-size (88 keys) touch-sensitive electronic keyboard is also acceptable. More information is available upon request. Voice students are encouraged to practice with a piano or electronic keyboard but may use an online keyboard to check pitches if they do not own a piano. Very punctual always comes in with a smile .My daughter has such confidence because of the positive attitude and comments her gives to her . He notices little details that will help her improve her playing the way he communicates with her is awesome she does not feel bad about her mistakes I wanted her to take her time and not feel pressured to play the violin .Thomas will be a lovely music tutor to any child I am really fortunate to have found him for my daughter.

I graduated from Mannes College of Music with a BS in violin performance and a minor in psychology. While at Mannes, I was a student of Sally Thomas (Julliard School), and other primary teachers include Yi-Wen Jiang (Shanghai String Quartet), Claudia Schaer, Amy Barlowe and Oscar Ravina. I have performed at every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. My performance schedule has led me to perform in concert with pop superstar Sarah Mclachlan and to solo performances with the Rockland Summer Institute orchestra.

My past chamber music coaches include Ann Setzer, Peter Prosser, Chin Kim, Gena Raps, and members of both the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and NY Philharmonic. I have also participated in masterclasses with Cho-Liang Lin, Pamela Frank, and Ida Kavafian.
I am also a alumna of the Meadowmount School of Music.

Currently, I am a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of America and have completed Suzuki teacher training for books 1 - 8 at NYC's School for Strings, where I trained with Ekaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb. My students have been accepted to performing arts high schools such as Laguardia Highschool School for the Performing Arts and now perform with ensembles such as Chicago University's Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, I completed both Music Mind Games Units 1 & 2 teacher training with Michiko Yurko in 2012. I incorporate this fun way of learning how to read and understand music theory into all of my lessons.

I generally try to tailor my teaching approach based on a student's individual goals with a strong emphasis on proper violin technique. I have the most experience teaching using the Suzuki method, but also utilize more traditional approaches in order to address the developmental level of my pupil. I expect my students to come in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.

With students 7 years of age and younger, I strongly recommend that a parent take lessons for 6 weeks prior to their child beginning instruction. I also insist that parents sit in on their child's lessons and take notes. This enables parents to properly supervise their child's practice, which ultimately leads to speedier progress and a better grasp of the material being taught.

Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

I have experience teaching students ages four through late 60’s, levels Pre-K through collegiate level. During my years of teaching, I have encountered and successfully instructed students of a wide variety of learning styles. For addressing technique with young kids, I use fun pneumonic devices such as "pizza box hand," "flamingo arm," and "umbrella fingers," to help my students remember, identify, and visualize proper hand, arm, and finger placement. We practice note names and rhythm through singing and memorization games. With these activities, students practice at home on their own and advance weekly between lessons while developing a love for playing the violin.

Lauren is an excellent teacher for adult students!

At the age of 54 I decided to purchase a violin and learn to play. I found Lauren Cauley through Takelessons.com and could not be more pleased with her!! She has taught me so much in my first four weeks. She's patient with me and encourages me when I get discouraged with my play. She is quick to answer the numerous questions I have. It was truly a pleasure meeting Concetta for my first ever violin lesson. It is difficult to learn anything at the age 40, specially a musical instrument, but she made it comfortable and easy to understand. She's extremely patient a key quality when teaching a subject such a music to anyone. I would say, give her teaching style a try and you won't regret it. Very knowledgeable indeed.

Very patient and beyond knowledgeable! I haven't done anything with TakeLessons before and my online class was hosted via skype so it was easy to get connected and learn at my own pace. I like that my lessons will be tailored to my style and my level of musical understanding. She has excellent follow-up for after the lessons as well. I'm excited to be a student again :)

American violinist Emily V. is an active and versatile performer of chamber and orchestral music. As a chamber musician, Emily has appeared with the Mannes American Composers Ensemble in the ensemble's Alice Tully Hall debut. Additionally, she has collaborated with the Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo in a concert that has been broadcast on WWFM, and is a member of Trio des Waldes, a horn trio that has performed throughout NYC and on the Bucks County (PA) Performing Arts concert series.

As an orchestral violinist, she regularly performs with the Symphony of Westchester and the Chappaqua Orchestra; previously, she served as concertmaster of the Mannes Orchestra, Columbus State University Philharmonic, and the pit orchestra for LoftOpera, and as section violinist in the Columbus and LaGrange Symphony Orchestras. She was an orchestral fellow
with the National Repertory Orchestra, and has attended the Bowdoin International and Madeline Island Music Festivals.

Emily maintains a private teaching studio of twenty students ages 3 to adult in the NYC/Long Island area. Additionally, she teaches group violin classes, as well as after school private lessons in the NYC public schools through Opus 118 Harlem School of Music. In the summers of 2013-2015, she was Junior Faculty at the Stringwood Chamber Music Camp.

Emily received her bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Columbus State University, where she was named the Presser Scholar, and received her master's from Mannes College of Music. Currently, Emily is pursuing a DMA in Performance at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her major teachers include Daniel Phillips, Lewis Kaplan, Muneko Otani, and Sergiu Schwartz. In 2016, she completed violin teacher training through Opus 118 Harlem School of Music's intern program.

I am a patient teacher, and passionate about teaching music. There are many aspects on learning how to play the violin. I focus on the sound a lot, so it will be a very short or almost to none screeching time when they play. To produce good sound, posture is number one thing. I like to build a student from a solid ground, so correct posture, right hand, left hand position, violin holding, and the whole body posture are all little pieces can make big differences in violin playing. By doing so, can make playing much easier, sounding beautiful, and make hard passages easier! And the correct posture will also help prevent the possibility from getting playing related injuries. I believe having inspiration is important too, listening to different music and great players can develop the ears, and also is a hugh inspiration to practice.
