I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher with extensive training in dance and drama;
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Arts Education from City College of NY.
Before settling into a music career, worked as a dance instructor, for the City of NY and received congrats from John Lindsey, then mayor, for outstanding achievement.
As an actor, performed in several off-Broadway plays and was a principal in the “Broadway tour”, ”Pulitzer prize ” winning play, “No Place to be Somebody.” I've performed through the years as a vocalist with a trio and as a ONE WOMAN SHOW at various night spots, concert halls and social events. As a voice coach I've had the good fortune to teach the skills and techniques of the art of singing.
Singing is the joy I share as a performer and as a teacher. Anyone can learn to sing; and do it on a superior level. It takes desire and the willingness to practice the skills necessary until the goal is achieved.
The journey is worth it!

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm
Breath
Voice
Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.

About Carolyn
Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.

Using traditional teaching methods, I create meaningful experiences for students by:
- being patient, flexible and creative in approach
- using visual, aural, and tactile teaching tools

One day, I decided to learn ukulele by myself but I became quickly stuck. I found Carolyn on this website and then went to her place to take my first lesson. Carolyn is super sweet; very welcoming, smiling, fun to work with. She is very positive and gives great feedbacks all the time! I learnt a lot during our session!! At some point, we sat at her piano to talk about notes and keys: it was very interesting to switch to another instrument. In addition, her place has very harmonious vibes: when I left I felt so much better!!! I definitely recommend Carolyn for music lessons! And I look forward to our next ukulele lesson!

Whether singing is your chosen career or just a treasured hobby, my goal is to help you succeed! I offer voice lessons to students of all backgrounds, ages and a variety of styles. I take a healthy, classical vocal approach to encourage freedom, ease and power in the voice. A student of Bel Canto, Alexander Technique and Yoga, I incorporate a full body approach to singing. My students range from amateurs to Broadway talent. I have prepared students to perform on stage, book agents, and to be featured in television and film. My younger students have been accepted into top performing arts programs such as The Professional Performing Arts School, Interlochen Center for the Arts and various conservatory programs.

Lessons are tailored to each individual student but generally begin with a breathing and vocal warm-up, followed by some technical exercises and finishing with a piece of music or several of their choosing. That being said, the lesson can be focused on whatever is ...

About Rebecca
**Whether you are seasoned performer or a an absolute beginner I want to help you reach your vocal potential!**

I have been running my own private studio for over a decade. Watching my students improve and make strides in their musical careers and reaching their personal goals is so fulfilling. I fell in love with teaching music while a student myself at the University of Michigan, where I received Masters of Music and a Bachelors of Music degrees with honors in voice performance. While there, I began my private vocal studio and study of vocal pedagogy. Since graduation, I have maintained a professional private studio in New York, while pursuing a performing career in classical, musical theater and new music. My younger students have gone on to programs such as the Professional Performing Arts School, the Interlochen Arts Academy and
various conservatory and college programs. My professional students have performed at such venues as New York City Opera, Radio City, in Film and Television and on National Tours. I love what I do and find it fulfilling to give my students the tools that they need to succeed and watch them achieve their goals.

I have performed in both the US and internationally on a professional level. As a performer I am comfortable in a range of repertoire: Musical Theater, Jazz, Opera, Pop, Folk and other genres. As a teacher, I find that my own experiences in performing inform and help guide my teaching style. In addition to teaching and performing in operas, concerts and musicals, I perform on behalf of an outreach organization called Concerts Motion, bringing live performances to audiences who are hospitalized, isolated or in need. I have also served as a Cantorial Soloist at Shaaray Tefila of Bedford, New York and the New York Area.

In addition to my more advanced and adult students, I have a passion for teaching children. I began working with younger students as an instructor at the Cranbrook Theater School. While there I taught lessons and group workshops on singing, acting and general performance to students ages 5 through high school. Since then I have worked with young students on a regular basis in both private lessons and working with music outreach programs in New York schools. In addition to building musical skills, I find that performing and studying music gives children a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their lives.

Teaching Emphasis

*Musicality
*Breath Control
*Healthy Vocal Technique
*Wide dynamic and vocal range
*Performance Practices
*Song Selection
*Children's Lessons
*Lessons to Improve Public Speaking and Speech

My approach to vocal instruction encourages a healthy technique bringing freedom throughout the entire body. I teach a variety of ages and singing levels. I look forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
The style and pace of my lessons are tailored to each individual student. I bring structure to the lessons, but work at the speed that is comfortable for you. It is my ultimate goal to give you the tools and the confidence to learn and perform music on your own. Most importantly we make the most of our time together for whichever length of lesson you choose.

Each lesson generally starts with a physical and vocal warm up. This is followed by vocal exercises (arpeggios, scales, and various other exercises that will develop flexibility and also breath control in the voice, as well as expanding the vocal range). The last part of the lesson will most often focus on a song or piece of music as we incorporate the technical and artistic elements we have worked on thus far.

Expectations:

Depending on the level of the student we will begin with the basics: pitch matching, simple vocal exercises, and standard songs. After a few months of lessons students should expect to have the skills to move on to more difficult vocalizes and advanced songs. All that we do in our lessons will have an emphasis on singing in the most healthy way for your voice.

We will work on intonation, rhythm, style, diction and projection. We will also do audition and performance preparation. I will give the you exercises to take home and work on between lessons.

We will have fun and learn a lot in the comfortable and energetic setting that I create!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private in-home studio: Separate studio with electric piano, music stand, several chairs, music books, mirrors, speakers and open space for us to work in!

There is a separate living room/waiting room where parents/caretakers are welcomed to wait while their student is in their lesson. Parents/caretakers are also welcomed to sit in on all or part of lesson in the studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring music repertoire books that we might be using. I would expect them to have a keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but have studied pedagogy pertaining to many different types of singing. I work with many singers of Opera and Musical Theater. I also have a lot of experience working with singers who are in bands and play instruments (guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, keyboards) while they are singing. I find this provides an entirely new set of challenges for the singer and feel that I have found efficient and successful ways of negotiating this. I also teach students of jazz and folk music and work with singer-songwriters on getting the best of themselves on their original pieces.

Establish healthy technique, undo bad habits, and free your natural voice, enabling you to sing in the style of your choice.

About Indigo
Indigo has been working in the performing arts since she was biting ankles, first as a dancer and vocalist, and later as a guitarist. She's composed music for and/or sung dozens of international television commercials, spots on Law and Order and songs in Films premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and as a lead guitarist and vocalist, toured the US, Canada, Europe and Iceland, extensively, performing in hundreds of theaters and rock clubs around the world, including-- Madison Square Garden, BAM, The Beacon Theater, Music Hall Of Williamsburg, The Bowery Ballroom, Club Nokia (LA), The Santa Barbara Bowl, The Chicago Theater, Baby's All Right, The Mercury Lounge, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (SF), Pickathon (Portland)

As a teacher, Indigo's method has, at it's core, a commitment to the idea of teaching a man to fish rather than giving hi
m a fish, and every student, regardless of age or experience will be taught to understand, first and foremost, how music works, so that he or she comes away, not only with the skills to play the material covered in the lessons, but, eventually, the ability to teach themselves any other material they're interested in.

With an emphasis on ear training, her natural approach to learning theory, makes even the most wary or challenged student understand with ease, and find pleasure in the process of learning. Rote memorization is eliminated and replaced by a deep understanding, which grows naturally, while technique improves alongside it. Students quickly find themselves able to play, sing and understand things previously only dreamed of.

These universal building blocks of music apply across all genres. Technique will be tailored to your specific interests, and from the start, a portion of each lesson will be devoted to learning the material of your choice.

Indigo also specializes in coaching songwriters, and can, in a gentle and non-invasive way, help to guide you through the process of both mastering craft, and establishing your own individual voice as a writer.

Indigo is an amazing teacher. While she is a professional musician with a deep understanding of music theory, I am an intermediate guitar player and don’t spend much time on theory - i mostly want to work on playing songs and singing, and she jumps right into what i am working on with enthusiasm and an open mind. She is good at explaining things and she is also always smiling and super nice. Can’t say enough good things.

Indigo is a fabulous and diverse teacher! I've been taking lessons with her for about 9 months. Although my lessons are "officially" for songwriting, we divide our time among that, guitar technique, and music theory. I've experienced so much progress and fun in several areas, and I attribute that to Indigo's teaching and guidance. I even wrote and produced my first solo song! Don't miss the chance to work with a great musician and teacher!

Stephanie is a wonderful teacher!

I always was interested in learning to sing opera and was a complete beginner when I first starting taking lessons with her. We did our lessons at my house, which was always really helpful and convenient (she can also do online lessons, too!).

Stephanie was always so patient and encouraging, even when I had trouble with certain songs. She genuinely seemed happy for me whenever I made progress! She also helped me a lot with breathing techniques, which is something I always struggled with.

Stephanie is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had and would highly recommend her to anyone!

JdC Voice is a singularly run vocal studio in Brooklyn, New York. It's founder, Jenisa de Castro, is passionate about teaching singing techniques that strive towards discovering the unknown. Each voice is different, and unique, and it is our job to uncover the mystery and fly beyond what we think we are capable of.

As a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a major in Drama, Jenisa has discovered much about her own voice, and has continued to study and explore with renowned vocal instructors such as Seth Riggs, Michael Goodrich, and her own father, Gregg de Castro.

JdC Voice is dedicated to providing quality lessons for any age that guarantee optimal growth and success in singing in any style. We are proud to offer a space that is patient, kind, but most importantly, fun!

About JdC
Please contact JdC Voice for availability.

Founder, Jenisa de Castro began vocal and dance lessons when she was only six years old, becoming a professional Polynesian performer at the age of 12. She quickly became entranced with the world of theater and film and discovered that nothing provides the spiritual fulfillment that comes with exploring the life of someone else, experiencing the world through their unique perspective, if only for a short while. After four rigorous years at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned a degree in drama, she found that, in addition to theater and film, there is personal fulfillment in any form of art, as long as you invest your whole self into the process. This discovery led Jenisa back to where she started: a small voice studio - but, now Jenisa assumes the role of teacher, eager to share her
gifts and insights with students of her own.

Jenisa is enthralled and inspired by the sheer amount of different voices that come to her, as well as the unique abilities of each student. She believes that learning from her students is an integral aspect of being an effective teacher and discovers more about humanity, as well as herself and her own voice, with each student she has the privilege of working alongside. Jenisa is eager to teach others, both in building a solid technical foundation, as well as to share the joy and fulfillment that she, herself, feels when she sings from within.

What draws you into a song and makes you love it? In order to make your listeners want more, you have to give them something they can't get anywhere else:
YOUR OWN UNIQUE VIBE.
Technical know-how only takes you so far in singing... there's a zillion people who can sing well! But talent combined with the ability to connect your voice with your emotions is what will set you apart.
I'm a working vocalist and songwriter who specializes in rock, pop, electronic, jazz, & acoustic music. I'm a trained Sabine Method teacher from Los Angeles, and my specialty is in voice strengthening. I work with beginners who are just starting out and need a direction, as well as professional singers who would like to refine their performance, learn microphone techniques, or explore a different genre.
I also teach songwriting composition, lyric writing, and creative guidance for your artistic goals.

About Meredith
I believe that creativity is a positive force in our world.
It has the power to heal, validate, energize, and give meaning to both its giver and receiver. Music is one of the most beautiful forms of creativity that exists!

I'm a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and have taught private voice sessions for 10+ years.
I've written and recorded 4 studio albums of my own music, and collaborated with a number of other talented musicians, songwriters, DJs and producers in Los Angeles and New York. I've performed live in many venues in NYC and Los Angeles, and almost every state in between.

Our lessons are designed to not only help you improve your singing voice, but to help you become more confident as a performer, and more comfortable expressing yourself in a way that is uniquely YOU!
Whatever level you're at with singin
g, we can individualize your lessons to cover everything that's important to you. I believe in supporting and encouraging my students, and making our lessons a be a safe atmosphere for you to experiment, try new things, and not feel self-conscious about making mistakes.

My music experiences range from the world of film scoring in Los Angeles, to rock and pop studio collaborations, to performing live and touring, to behind-the-scenes work in digital music distribution. I also have a background in working with people who are differently abled, both individually and in groups, with singing, piano, guitar, instrument exploration, rhythm, and movement.

It's my joy to combine my passion and experience with the arts, in order to help others from all walks of life get connected with their own self-expression.

Here are some highlights of what you'll learn in our lessons:

-Learn how to keep your voice from tiring out or weakening
-Become more confident and relaxed with public presentations or performing
-Find versatility in your expression
-Work on enunciation
-Learn microphone techniques for singing or speaking

I do project pitches for my company at client sites and Meredith has been incredible at helping me refine my talking points, and has even consulted on my core offering, allowing me to reflect on what’s more important in my pitches, and has overall helped me feel more comfortable in how I’m communicating. I believe she has been responsible for me being able to land my most recent contract, which was huge! I highly recommend Meredith, she’s incredibly patient and understands why I do what I do, and directs me to communicate from that truth, which has helped me immensely!

Meredith is a joy to work with. She has a very relaxing energy at all times, which is key for proper singing technique. Furthermore, she's easy and flexible to work with and has experience across so many different music settings, genres, and skill sets, that you'll end up learning more than you'd bargained for every time.
