My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich my immediate community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building strong connections with my students at absolutely any level. A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.
Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.
Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.
I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.
Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.
I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.
My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I prefer for my students to have a keyboard or piano, and if possible, a music stand. We can always make a situation work if the student does not have access to these tools. I provide music, pencils, etc.

I am an opera singer, and specialize in classical singing. However, I apply similar vocal technique to all genres of music, and focus on breathing technique, body and energy awareness, and discuss a holistic approach to singing with all students.

About Cândida L.
I'm a Brazilian musician around 35 years old, MASTER in Piano Performance, Professor at a University in Brazil and in the US, also Bachelor in Singing and Composition. I love interacting with classes of piano and Jazz singing, for kids and adults. I have a big repertoire of classical music, pop, musical theater and all the Brazilian songs. Also, the practice can include harmony studies, ear training, improvisation and composition. The concept of my methodology is using creativity, technology and good music to make the students play all the songs they want and develop skills. I can teach in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Professor Cândida L. B. is an inspiring world class musician, classically trained and rooted in Brazilian culture. Her artistic work mixes folkloric music, bossa nova, pop, latin and african music, jazz, and all styles of world music. After 15 years teaching in a University in Brazil and in the United States, now she also created a program in which she offers her experience as a music educator for all ages music students and from all over the world. Ms. B combines her formal academic studies in University as an artist and educator with studies and certifications in Dalcroze, Linklater, improvisation, circle singing, music production, technology and especially her experience in studios and playing with musicians all over America. Special call to “O Passo” – a Brazilian methodology on rhythm and pitch, connecting body and voice to learn music, performance and reading. Fantastic!
You can connect by Skype or you can also choose to use FaceTime or Google Hangout. There are easy instructions that you receive to make sure you are all set to start. You have the chance to record your class and you will receive a link to all the material we use in class. In tour or local, classes must go on!
IN NEW YORK
If you are in New York Area, come for class in one of the studios. We are at midtown west, in great locations and professional studios.
You can choose between 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes lessons. Combo choices of more than 1 subject – you can combine piano and singing, or singing and songwriting for example.
SPECIAL PROJECTS AND COMMUNITY
You will start making part of our special projects, that include shows, concerts, events, CDs, month challenges, gifts, and other surprises. Touring different cities, you will make part of a community that gets together to watch shows, to perform and to travel – our performances happen in different cities, including New York and Rio de Janeiro! She pinpoints exactly what I am doing wrong during my lesson and offers suggestions on how to correct it going forward. I appreciate that because if your instructor doesn't tell you, your audience will. And you might not like how they say it. I am there to go beyond just singing in the shower, and her constructive criticism only makes me better. She is also polite when she corrects you, she's not cracking the whip.
She focuses immediately on different techniques that will help you improve your voice so that you can PROGRESS, instead of just banging out scales on the piano lesson after lesson and overlooking mistakes a student may make like some instructors do. I hate to be this blunt, but there are some instructors I have met in the past who do just that (none of them are from takelessons) to me it shows a devotion to the art and a commitment to bringing out the best voice that you have she wants you to be as good as her! To me no one could ask for any more than that in a voice instructor. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a teacher.

I've observed her in the Writing Center on a number of occasions, and she always does a great job navigating the difficult balance between helping students directly, and creating a path for them to work through questions on their own. She is direct, but supportive. She also is very perceptive of students' anxiety levels - many are kids who tend to stress about college and grades often - and how to change her tone, or comment with a personal anecdote, when what the student needs most is a moment to laugh or calm down.
Andrea's best skill in my opinion is teaching her tutees to adjust their priorities based on a deadline. She consults students whose papers are due in a couple of hours, and others who have a whole week left, and without being preachy gets across realistic expectations of what can be done within the timeframe.

my name is Ana Victoria. I was born in New York but my parents are from Puerto Rico. I married an Italian guy. I have two kids who were born in China where I lived for 7 years. I am bilingual English and Spanish but I can also speak Italian and Portuguese because I lived in Brazil for 2 years.
