A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S. has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a staff music instructor at the Institute of Music for Children. With 28 years of experience on the guitar and 32 years on piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written, recorded, and produced over one hundred songs. He plays and teaches a variety of styles on both the guitar and the piano, from classical to jazz to rock. Ian is patient, friendly, and loves sharing the gift of music.
Ian was the guitarist in the Princeton University Jazz Ensemble for 3 seasons, was selected from a nationwide pool of musicians to perform at a special music event at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was the recipient of the New Jersey Gove
rnor's Award in Arts Education for the category of Instrumental Music.
*** Lesson Details *** I am very laid back and friendly, and I want you or your child to be as comfortable as possible during our lessons. You or your child will develop confidence and musical intelligence. I will make your lessons fun, enjoyable, and effective. Boredom is not an option! Music is fun... let's keep it that way.
The teaching methods I use will be custom-tailored to your individual needs, personality and specific musical goals. If it's guitar or piano you want to learn, I want to get you playing exactly what you want to be playing as soon as possible. That's what you're here for, and that's what I'm here for. I will make it happen. If it's songwriting that you want to learn, I will help you access that place inside of you that is dying to express itself creatively, and will teach you techniques to harness that energy and translate it successfully into musical expression.
You can expect to learn all the basics of music theory, proper playing techniques, improvisation and spontaneous musical expression, and I will help you develop your "ear" so you can figure out songs you like just by listening to them. This is all about you and your goals, and I want you to achieve them in a fun and engaging way.
*** Studio Equipment *** Living room: Upright piano, guitars, amps, keyboard, percussion
*** Specialties *** I specialize in pop, rock, classical, jazz, blues, folk, fingerstyle (guitar), etc. I also teach improvisation and songwriting, and try to develop the student's ear for figuring out songs they like on their own.
Ian is fantastic teacher. He was so patient with my toddler daughter. And when she became fuzzy during the class, Ian could be so creative to always come out with a way to calm her down and redirect her attention to other musical things. I would love him to be my daughter’s music teacher for as long as possible if I did not have to move.

Ian is very knowledgeable and is great in explaining theory and great in demonstrating so you can understand.
Never picked up a guitar before? No problem. I excel at giving you the basics and building a program that will help you grow as a musician.

I grew up in the South Bronx during the 70s and 80s. I understand the importance of community and how a neighborhood can be destroyed if the people do not get involved and work together for real solutions. Music and films were my salvation. I began to write songs and play guitar at the age of ten, and 15 years ago I started a band to raise the awareness level of teens and adults regarding the world around them. The band is called Glass of Know. The group had songs playing on rotation on upstate NY
Although music was my first love I always had a fascination with film. I began to study with the successful theater and film coach Ruth Kulerman four years ago. After many lessons and plenty of encouragement from Ruth, I decided to start testing the waters. Early in 2007 I went out and started auditioning. The response was overwhelming and I landed 17 roles in 5 months. Not a bad problem to have your first time out of the gate. It wasn't prime time or the big screen, but it gave me enough confidence to continue to work hard and more importantly, I knew I had something special to offer.
I've had films in the Asian American Film Festival, New Film Maker Festival, and 2 years ago the film En Route won first place at the Milford Connecticut Film Festival, in which I was the lead. I was nominated for best actor at the Columbia film festival for the short Good Bye. In 2011 I was the lead in the film Down & Across which went to the Cannes film festival. I'm currently working on a TV pilot with the same team. The Coffee List was my first attempt at the writer, director, and actor. The film has been screened at International Manhattan Film Festival, The Katra Film Series and we came in 3rd place for the HollyShorts Challenge on Indi website.

Wonderful approach to teaching a beginner.

Rina transformed a septuagenarn with very little vocal experience into a much more confident and capable vocalist...in only five 1hr lessons. I plan to continue with Rina because learning with her is fun and although I have learned a lot I want to absorb more of what she is capable of teaching me.
Lessons are tailored towards the students goals and abilities. Play with or without a pick, learn popular songs, or write your own.
Over the last 25+ years of teaching guitar, I've found that most of my students want to learn to play popular songs they've heard on the radio (I teach all decades of songs, from 1920's to current hits, and I "take requests").
I can also teach note-reading and music theory (optional- recommended for those who want to major or minor in music in college, and for those who already play another treble-clef instrument).
My goal is to build confidence and make learning fun. I hone in on a students' strengths and weaknesses, build on the strengths and gradually improve the weaknesses.
Acoustic guitar is the most social musical instrument there is! So get started! I promise you will have a non-threatening, relaxed environment to learn in, and go at a pace that is just right for you.
Music is my LIFE!
After more than 25 years of teaching at music camps, music stores, 3 colleges and my home, I completely understand that the lessons are all about YOU, the student: what you want to learn, taught to you in a way that works for your brain and personality.
And if you don't know exactly what you want to learn, that's OK. We can figure that out together as we go along learning the basics.
I help students learn to play songs by artists they like.
I also help students write songs, or put chords to their existing lyrics.
For those who are interested, I teach note-reading (not required) and theory (not required) and ear training (not required).
The lessons are always tailored towards your (the student's) goals.
I also teach classical and fingerstyle guitar for the occasional person who specifically wants
either of those styles.
My purpose as a teacher: help people have a fun experience, learning in an organized way, adapted to your learning style and goals, while learning to do exactly what you wanted to do when you decided you wanted to play the guitar.
In 1994, I was let go from my job at a music store because I was sick. Which sounds awful, but was the best thing to ever happen to me- it was then I got over my fears and became a full-time musician, teaching and writing and performing. I have never looked back! I may not be a household name, but I am living the dream.
Whether you want to sing to your kids or play for an audience of 50,000, or just play guitar for yourself, you first have to get started.
Carla's teaching technique was perfect for me. I have played the guitar for longer than I care to admit and even I was tired of hearing my same old stuff. She incrementally moved me forward line by line, measure by measure to where I now have several fingerpicking style numbers in my portfolio.
Playing for my own enjoyment is now enjoyable once again.
My lessons were online and very effective - when I got stuck, Carla would send me a sample audio clip of her playing the difficult part which was a godsend for me in how I learn new musical things.
I highly recommend Carla and her Carlalology method of guitar teaching. You won't be disappointed.

Great teacher and she teaches many different styles of playing.

i originally selected carla as my instructor based on her skills, resume, other students comments etc. listed on the website. shortly after my lessons began i realized she was a vital resource for guidance, knowledge and material all of which would enable me to grow as a musician. she is talented, smart, inspirational, funny and more, what else could you ask for?!!!!
My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum. I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes. Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged. Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal. As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I am always prepared to adjust my lesson plans based on the students progress and overall comfort zone.
My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life.
The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument then you've stopped growing musically. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and concepts.
I strongly believe that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!
Awesome first lesson for our 14 year old daughter! She’s pumped to continue with Chris, and we’re pleased with the entire process so far.
June 26, 2019
I have been taking lessons from Chris for 5 years. He is very open to learn and teach all styles of music. in turn, allowing me learn and play music I though i never would. His guidance in "the technology" of music is also greatly appreciated.
The learning experience with Chris is top notch, never an issue with communication or punctuality.Always able to move around his busy schedule for the "adult" student.
I want to thank Chris for allowing to find my "Soul Mustard" He is the best you can find

Chris is an awesome instructor! He was patient and professional. I was truly a beginner and Chris helped me every step of the way. I would recommend him to anyone looking to pick up a guitar or further enhance your skills. Thanks for all the help!

James brings experience, patience, and a solid plan to help make you a better musician. As a beginner he is helping me grasp the fundamentals so that I have the tools necessary to take on the next challenge in my journey to become a musician.

Jimmy has a nice balance between encouraging interest and basic understanding of music theory, with the fun of learning an instrument. His clear passion for music and teaching others to enjoy it too helps me progress on my personal goals, timeline and availability.
February 9, 2019
Jimmy is very knowledgeable and very approachable. In a short time, he has helped me to unlock the fretboard. Highly recommended.
I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.
Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. I have experience not just with teaching but also with writing, recording, and performing music in successful bands and on multiple instruments and in multiple genres. I am comfortable teaching piano, guitar, and bass guitar, ukulele, and I especially love teaching music theory. I have extensive theory training at the college level and have written and composed extensively in the classical, rock, jazz, and folk traditions. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your musical goals.
Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).
He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

I hadn't played a musical instrument since elementary school when I started Ukulele lessons with Ben. Ben started from the beginning, answered all my questions along the way, and built upon that information in each lesson. It wasn't in a didactic way, but in a way that was really customized to fit my Ukulele lesson goals. Ben's teaching style is very flexible also. I had some Ukulele lesson books I had been gifted and we worked from those. I didn't feel that I had to buy a bunch of additional equipment, books, etc.
I recommend Ben as a music teacher. He is understanding, encouraging, and inspirational. I am looking forward to continuing lessons with Ben and JC Instrumental.

Ben has been working with our daughter since January 2019, when she turned 6 1/2. He arrives at our home on time each week and he works with her at an age appropriate level. We appreciate that he recognizes the effort she puts into the weeks when she practices often and he gently makes her aware when she hasn't practiced enough. He always speaks with her in a kind way and with us in a collaborative manner. We all want her to enjoy her piano experience, and we are thankful to have found Ben just a few blocks away from our home.
"I am a new guitar player and had taken lessons with another instructor for over a year. I didn't feel like I was progressing well and changed instructors.
I am glad I did! I have been working with George and he has helped to fix some bad habits that I had learned. My technique is already improved and and I feel like I am finally progressing. He works with me on what I want to work on and incorporates theory that I need to understand. He is personable and I enjoy working with him."
"Russell is an amazing instructor that is passionate about music."
"I've had a blast learning the songs and techniques I love from Wes! If you want to learn and have fun doing it, Wes is the guy!"
"William Beck is an amazing teacher. He's incredibly knowledgeable in his instruments, as well as patient and laid back with his students. He's made learni
ng guitar for me extremely fun and easy. I would recommend him to anybody that has a desire to learn music :)"
"Jordan is one of the finest musicians I've met. He is one of the most patient and humble teachers I've met. His slots book fast though, so if he has a slo
t for a new student, jump on it! This guy will never take advantage of you, and is always understanding when I've had stuff come up. He really treats everyone with over-the-top kindness and never equivocates on that principle. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"
"Timon is a really great guitar teacher. I am an older student who has had some previous musical education in other instruments. Timon is able to underst
and my goals and customize the learning plan and approach to meet me at my current level of skills and understanding. He has an incredible knowledge of music from both a theory POV as well as different genres, styles and music eras. He is really fun to work with and and is always supportive and encouraging. I look forward each week to the learning process. I definitely believe I will be a much better, more well-rounded guitar player working with Timon than I would be with other teachers that I have met."
"Grant takes his time with beginners, and gives wonderful practice tips. He also introduced us to a cool website which helps one learn songs by the chords
we are learning. He is very friendly and accommodating! Salt of the earth, that guy! :)"
"David is an amazing talent and provides me with much needed inspiration. In little over a year, I have learned a tremendous amount about nearly all styles
of guitar, classical and lead guitar in particular. It's very helpful to have an awesome instructor who is extremely knowledgeable and very patient. His lesson plans are geared towards what I want to learn and the lessons that we work on cover all the techniques that are necessary to take my skills to the next level. He makes every lesson fun and he works with me until I am comfortable to move on."
"Austin is great because he is easy to work with and is good about knowing what pace is helpful."
Nobody likes trudging through difficult music that they don’t like. If a song is too hard, it’s not going to sound good. And if you don’t like the song, why bother putting in the effort?
To solve this problem for you, here’s a very eclectic list of easy songs to play on your acoustic guitar.
DISCLAIMER: Making music is tricky business. There’s a lot of multitasking and it takes time to get things flowing the way that you want to hear them. Additionally, guitarists all have di …
