Great at making sure you understand the basics of music theory before proceeding to the instrument itself. Helping me become a more confident and smarter musician.
Francine D.
I've taken lessons before and have always become disappointed because there was never any structure to the lessons and theory was treated as secondary. I wanted to really delve into theory because that is the knowledge needed to have no limits. Finally, I found Jimmy. He is a true teacher. Jimmy makes sure he teaches you the theory behind what you are doing. I have been playing for over ten years and was not progressing. After just a few lessons with him, I am starting to truly see the fretboard. I am finally excited again!

Andrew is the best online lesson experience I've had. He's always super-positive, always encouraging, and just generally has a great attitude. His lessons are very well adapted to the online format, giving you video clips of the important moments in your lesson and links to extra resources. I've tried multiple instructors and although Andrew isn't the most affordable teacher on TakeLessons, he is worth every penny. After trying several I chose to continue with Andrew and increase our cadence to 3 hours a week. I'm seeing improvement in my skills nearly every day with his guidance!

Working with Andrew has taken me further in a few months than I've taken myself in 10 years of self-learning.

His patience makes learning painless. He's great at finding challenging but accessible songs to learn (that I never would have found on my own), and his ability to quickly learn and then teach songs I would love to play has been a pleasant unintended surprise.
Jack L.
Easy to talk to and understand. Gave specific tips and practice instructions. I'm looking forward to next lesson.

I have played guitar for over 35 years professionally and currently do as well. As a music major at Broward college I studied theory and am able to apply and explain this in my teachings. i.e Rudiments, The staff guitar tabs, scales, chords, inversions, box systems, linear and horizontal scales, modes. etc. I can teach, rock, pop, classical and other genres of guitar, and have done extensive research in finger picking styles. Most importantly, when a student wants to learn a particular song, instead of showing it to them, I show them the process and give them the tools and theory behind figuring it out for themselves.

My guitar lessons have an emphasis on rhythmic and harmonic training (how things sound and feel). Building a sense of melody and musicality are also a strong focus. This is accomplished through learning and playing familiar songs, reading different kinds of music, and improvising/composing. All the while, we will be building a relaxed and natural approach to the instrument.

Taking Electric Bass Guitar lessons with Dan Brown, has been a great experience. Dan listened to my goals and tailored the lessons around my ability and musical influences. His classes are well structured, but also relaxed. Dan has incredible knowledge of the Bass and has encouraged me in all styles of play including slap Bass. I have no hesitation in recommending Dan to anyone interested in learning Bass.

"Great Patient Teacher!

Jason is great! I am in my late 30's with a busy family, and Jason is willing to work around my schedule. I don't have much time to practice, but he is very patient. He molds a lesson to my ability to learn, and gives me assignments to work on based on where I'm at with my experience. He is prompt and follows up with your questions quickly and always willing to help. He explains lessons in detail, and provides positive evaluation. I would highly recommend Jason to be your Guitar teacher!"

5 Killer Tips for Mastering Guitar Chords

Last week, TakeLessons teacher Kevin B. showed us how to play 5 easy guitar chords that allow you to play tons of easy songs.  Have you been practicing? Just as pianists should learn the theory behind scales, beginner guitar players should review individual chords to ensure a well-rounded foundation.  After all, chords are the basis of guitar playing, so the more you know, the easier time you'll have learning songs.  Instead of just memorizing each chord, go the extra mile to really unders …
