Just to clear up any confusions, I do not own and do not teach: Diatonic Accordion, a Bandoneon, or a Bayan. All of which are accordion instruments that feature buttons for both hands and not just the left.
I do however own and teach the 120 Button Chromatic Piano Style Accordion with Stradella Bass (Left Hand Buttons/Right Hand Piano).
I can teach you how to play the accordion as a lead instrument in a group, as an instrument for accompaniment, or as a solo instrument where you use both band to create songs by yourself. I can help introduce easy songs in a variety of styles including jazz, musette (french), classical, zydeco, polka, Irish, etc...
You do not need a 120 button bass accordion; 24, 32, 60, 72 will will also work just fine - you will just have less range available.
Diatonic Accordions and Bayans often use the same left handed Stradella system as Chromatic Piano Accordions (the instrument I own and teach) but I am unfamiliar with the system in their right ...
I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been playing music for more than half of my life. It has never stopped being the light in my day and now it is my hope to shed some of that light onto you or your child. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience, even more importantly I love teaching and music with a passion.
I have been playing an instrument since the 4th grade (cello) and, as I learned more about how music works, was slowly able to pick-up a greater variety instruments with an increasing degree of ease. In high school, I decided to pick-up the guitar just to "have fun and rock out". I joined a band, played in the high school orchestra, joined the high school jazz band and began to practice songwriting and cover songs. Still, it was not until after I took my first class on music the
ory that I knew how much I not only loved the thrill of playing music but the discovery of how it worked. With this experience I can show you or your child why learning an instrument can be not only an exciting experience but an interesting and enthralling one as well.
I have been teaching music for over 7 years and have had the privilege of teaching children as young as 4 to adults in their late 80's. I am a very attentive teacher who can not only help get you moving in the right direction but keep you on that path until your are a self-sufficient musician. A level of musicianship that simply means you can learn whatever you want on your instrument on your own, whether it be for business, pleasure or for mere self-improvement.
Through my own student career in private lessons I had the chance to study with graduates of the Musician's Institute (MI), the California Institute of the Arts (CAL Arts) and Berklee College of Music. This has provided me with an inside look into how and what each institute teaches, as well as a first hand look at the techniques and ideas that the great players from these remarkable schools have come to produce.
My formal music education consists of 2 years at Pasadena City College where I obtained my general Associates Degree (much of the studies included music) and a semester at California State University Long Beach as a Jazz Guitar Performance Major. Additionally, I completed a great deal of California State University Long Beach's teaching credential program (focusing on the teaching of history/social studies), where I learned strategies and theories of how and what to teach my students - making me that much more knowledgable of my craft. At Pasadena City College I studied with jazz/classical guitarist, Ron Berman, who has played with such jazz greats as Herb Ellis and Jimmy Wyble. At Cal State Long Beach I studied with jazz guitarist Ron Eschete, a former teacher at MI who has toured with the likes of Ray Brown, John Dizzy Gillespie and Jim Hall.
Most importantly I hope to show you or your child a new way to love and appreciate music. And to provide you with the ability and know-how to have the most fun on your instrument as possible.
*** Lesson Details *** Throughout my lessons, I always encourage basic skills including scales, sight-reading and technical exercises. But what I hope to give all my students is a basic understanding of music and their instrument, providing them with a practical ability to navigate the vast world of music for a lifetime.
Beyond these skills, I always have songs, styles and theory for you to work on but I am often more interested in what you as an individual want to learn on your instrument. Getting to learn concepts that you have chosen yourself will help encourage practice and will make the finished product all the more the rewarding.
I can custom tailor a teaching curriculum and/or style for any of my students: we can focus on learning songs, learning to read, how to write music, how music works, and even how to play specific styles of music (including funk, rock, jazz, Latin, flamenco, classical, country and blues). I also self tailor my own worksheets and set weekly goals with my students to help encourage practice, understanding and progress. For students interested in more advanced concepts, I can also teach ear training, music theory, advanced jazz improvisation as well as advanced playing techniques.
All this in a friendly and easy-going teaching environment.

I've had three banjo teachers over the past two and a half years. Judging by Jared's performance today, he's the best of the lot. The first banjo teacher expected too much too soon, and the second one started me out with the basics, as if I had never picked up a banjo before. Jared is starting our lessons at the right stage for where I am. He's patient and explains things well. If I had started with him two and a half years ago, I'd be a decent banjo player by now. Thanks, Jared!!!!!
all levels to professional. Theory and improvising along with song chord figuring.
I am a multi-instrumentalist who has taught for 41 years. I have had both Zakke W and two other rock stars in lessons,. Further, I had a Grammy nominee and a well known comedian and Hollywood Actress, as well as countless music school scholarship students. Many of my students have embarked on performing careers as well as teaching at the school and college level. The lessons are laid back, friendly and above all- helpful. We will study and work on the music of your choice, but, with a slight twist from the traditional, that I incorporate not just playing the song, but to get you the student ready to be able to work out the songs harmony, theory, notation and phrasing on your own. I feel this must be done in order to get a student to be able to perform with others. Lessons should always be about instructing a student to know and utilize e
very musical concept so that they will be able to perform with others.
*** Lesson Details *** You can expect to be well grounded in theory and being able to play an instrument with solo and chords, comping, etc., in all keys - as well as song structure and song learning. We will analyze all aspects of the song. We will do a song together, then, i will through theory, show the student how to work out a song on their own.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have amps, cables, recorders, books, sheets, etc here at the studio. You need only your instrument and a music writing book.
*** Travel Equipment *** they must have instrument
*** Specialties *** All methods are my own. We work through theory and analysis to enable a student to learn how to put a song together and perform it on their own.
I am a beginner/never played piano before and John made me feel so comfortable and eased my nerves from the very start of our 1st session, He is patient, accommodating and provides encouragement!
John is a Fantastic instructor!! Would absolutely recommend him!!
January 29, 2019
My first lesson with John S. was great. He is very knowledgeable and makes you feel extremely relaxed and comfortable. I really feel like I will finally move forward with my music!
May 26, 2018
I have used John in the past and I find him to be a very competent and informative instructor.
The accordion I use is the piano type, not the buttoned.
With an associates degree from El Camino, and lots of musical studies in Mexico, I have been fortunate to tour through the States and through my country. My lessons include real working tips for the real life, keeping it fun as the material is created for your specific needs. I am a multi-instrumentalist that will pass as much knowledge as you can practice... Let's work together...

My son is a BEGINNER beginner. Rodrigo is a very nice guy and seems to know his stuff very well. I would give him 5 stars but I don't think he realized that my son needed the basic, basic 1st lesson (i.e. how to hold the instrument). We've only attended one session so this is fully based on that one lesson. I'm sure he'll adjust his teaching from here on out.
May 22, 2018
Mr. Rodrigo is a professional, respectful and super patient instructor. I could not made a better choice. I am looking forward to my next class @
October 26, 2017
Rodrigo is a great teacher, not only an expert musician, but he shares all his knowledge.
20+ years experience, CD recording, orchestra etc.! EVERY MUSIC STYLE!
Teaching is more a hobby and pleasure for me than a side job. My students mostly have to remind me that the time is over and I have to let them go. ;)
As I said, it is passion and love for the music and this fantastic instrument. Send me a message if you have any questions.
If you don't own an instrument. No problem. I can provide a rental until we find the right instrument for you within you budget.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
I work as a tutor and mentor in many of those fields for years. It was and is a side business, but I always enjoyed teaching. I am looking forward to move on with you and / or your kids. Have a great day, Marcel
Update 02/10/15: Takelessons is a great way to teach and a fantastic and easy way to learn for students. I currently have 3 students per week, with several hours. I really enjoy it, either online via Skype or Facetime or Live at the students place. Hit me up and let's move something together.
I learned a lot from Marcel and liked his vision of how to redo the garden. The original garden was cluttered with overlapping plants and we discussed how to improve it. He pulled out his iPad and made several garden sketches that were helpful. The original garden was cluttered with overlapping plants and we decided to remove several of them and re-"orchestrate" the remaining ones. (We only bought new plants if they were needed to realize the new garden vision.) He is also a very hard worker, helping me (physically) transplant and add plants as required. For example, we transplanted a 100+ (?) pound Sago palm across the front yard. I would never have done that on my own (too heavy for me) but together we did it! Highly recommended. Bill

Excellent teacher. We took a 20'x2' section of "dirt" in the back, redid the soil, transplanted a rose in that section, added two other new roses and a bunch of ground cover. Looks great! Recommended.

I did not actually take any lessons with him, but his schedule did not reflect what showed as available in Takelessons. He had a very bad attitude and would not actually schedule the lesson after several exchanges.
I still don't understand why so many people laugh when you say "accordion"! Let's show them different! This is one of the most expressive, international, fun, and emotional instruments out there! So much more than just "polkas": Argentinian tangos, German beer songs, French cafe, Southern Zydeco, Irish Celtic music, Russian folk, Italian melodic, and the list goes on... Bottom line: I love this instrument because it is FUN and VERY "produceable". Half of it is an arsenal of buttons while the other half is a good 'ol keyboard, and depending on which model you have, there are many tonal buttons to thoroughly change its personality -- no electricity needed!
I can teach you how to create some fun and inspired music on it regardless of your musical tastes, as long as you have a PIANO ACCORDION -- not JUST buttons like a bayan or concertina (sorry -- please note that I do NOT teach chromatic/diatonic button accordion or "virtual/electronic accordions" such as the Roland series -- just
About Mark V
Mark V has been “Specializing In Melody” since the age of 5 when he discovered his natural ability to play and create catchy tunes by teaching himself the harmonica by ear. He went on to learn the accordion at 10, the piano at 12, MIDI and synthesizers at 15, the guitar at 30, and a long list of other exotic instruments along the way, completely by ear. He has collected rare synthesizers since 1984 and has well over a 100 in his collection. Mark V is also Pro Tools certified and has been teaching Pro Tools, MIDI, music production, composing, keyboard techniques & sound design since 1998 having won numerous academic awards. Mark V has a BA from UCSC in an individual major of Audio/Visual Composition. He wears many hats including his first passion as a prolific composer, BMI/BMG songwriter, producer, sound designer, Pro Tools editor, MI
DI expert & programmer, writer, consultant & teacher inspiring his students to become better than they ever dreamed possible all while having FUN!
I really appreciate Mark's teaching ability. He breathes music and make it easy to understand. I wasn't expecting to make that much progress or to have that depth of knowledge of music or my instrument in only 5 lessons. He gives a lot and he is eager to respond to my questions. I recommend Mark as a accordion teacher.

Mark V. was great. He knew how to keep class fun and engaging. He truly cares and teaches piano in a way that is intuitive and can be applied to more than one instrument.
September 22, 2017
I like Mark's approach in teaching, he gives a lot of useful information within the time of the lesson, and it keeps me busy until the next lesson. I love the classes!
Teaching for 20 years. I tailor each lesson to the needs/goals of every student.
For beginners, I can write easy versions of your favorite songs for you, while giving you a well balanced music education.
For singers, I can show you how to easily accompany yourself and sound like a pro without reading a note.
For children, I make lessons fun and varied with learning and musical games to keep them excited and engaged.
For classical players wanting to try other styles, I can show you how to improvise and jam in several styles (I went through the transition and I know how it is!)
For everyone, I can teach you the most efficient ways to learn any musical skill based on experience and leading scientific books on learning, while keeping lessons fun!
I've studied piano and other instruments for 30 years, have been teaching music for 20, and have been a full time professional musician and music teacher for 11 years.
As a musician who was raised on classical piano but has also spent his life playing in bands, jamming, and composing in several genres, I believe that a well-rounded musical education is not only practical, but that it brings out the most enjoyment in music.
I also believe in teaching students whatever they love whether it's classical, rock, pop, jazz, world music, or a mix of everything! The more they love it, the more they will practice, and in turn the more they will love how they have improved - a circle of awesomeness!
As a professional musician, I play over 130 shows a year throughout North America as lead singer-guitarist for Celtic Rock group The Whiskeydicks, a
s the touring pianist for classical crossover group Vivace, as a solo singer-guitarist-pianist, and as the lead singer-guitarist-pianist-composer for my own symphonic-rock-fusion group, The Living. I've also toured extensively in Europe as keyboardist and backing vocalist for singer-songwriter Melanie Dekker.
My compositions have been performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, The Plastic Acid Orchestra, Turning Point Ensemble, Ad Mare Wind Quintet, Vivace, The Living, The Whiskeydicks and cellist-singer-songwriter Cris Derksen.
I have a B.Mus in Piano and Music Composition from The University of British Columbia. I'm an IVA Certified Level I Voice Instructor and have studied Vocals with John Henny, Jeffrey Skouson, Guy Babusek, and Spencer Welch; piano with Terence Dawson, David Vandereyk, and Ross Taggart; composition with Dorothy Chang, Keith Hamel, and Armanini; drums with Jay Deachman and Morgan Childs; bass with David Spidel; and accordion with Jelena Milojevic.
I've just moved to LA from Vancouver where I had about 40 students, so this is the time to sign up as I have room for new students for the first time in years!
Accordion is one of my truest loves. I've been a musician as long as I can remember. I've been playing traditional Irish accordion for 6 years and have had 5 very talented teachers myself. I can apply my performance and teaching techniques to piano or button accordion. I've also played concert piano accordion for 6 years, and can teach the fundamentals of accordion playing, advanced technique and style for accordion, basic to advanced music theory, and general performance and practice techniques. I have several accordions that can be rented as well.
I'm a film composer by trade, but I love teaching as well. I love sharing my passion for music with others. I have a BM from Appalachian State University in piano performance and music theory/composition. I also have an MFA in music composition for the screen from Columbia College Chicago. I studied abroad in Ireland for a summer and learned traditional Irish music. I've been playing piano and composing since I was a young child, and picked up folk instruments along the way. Folk music has been a constant source of joy in my life, and I am continually learning more about it. Music is what gets me out of bed in the morning!
Outstanding first lesson, great instructor! Looking forward to weekly lessons.

Connor is an excellent teacher. I worked with her via Skype for over a year. I played accordion as a child and wanted to get back into it as an adult. She helped me build my confidence and my proficiency around playing the accordion. She went through a lesson book that I purchased on my own previously. She arranged music for me so I could play more contemporary songs that my 3yo daughter would recognize. She worked with my schedule. She has a lovely personality. She is very encouraging. She is amazingly talented in music. And I couldn't recommend a better teacher. I wish you all the best, Connor! Thank you for everything!
"Sheila was great. She has patience and very informative. Gives positive recognition. Looking forward to next week."
"Great - Shelia is wonderful! So enthusiastic and patient!"
"Alex is an excellent teacher. While he is a very accomplished musician he communicates in ways I can understand as a beginner. He quickly identifies are
as I need to work on and both shows and tells me how to do that. He encourages questions as well as creativity that builds on the basics. He makes good use of the lesson time and is very encouraging. I can easily take what I learn in the lesson and practice it on my own. I look forward to my next lesson!"
"Great first lesson"
"I had never taken lessons via Skype before, but Rodrigo really did a great job or making the lessons relevant to my interests. He was incredibly knowledge
able and flexible! I would definitely recommend him."
"Shelia is an excellent instructor and I would recommend her to anyone."
"Professional, prepared, punctual and encouraging. The lesson was well-paced and enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one."
"Very quickly helped me learn basics to begin playing..."
