Bass lessons always begin with 5 minutes of scales, arpeggios or etudes to warm up. We will sometimes take a few minutes to analyze the music we perform, as that helps us understand how to perform it.
For beginners the focus is on technique, for more advanced students we tend to focus on how making good creative performance choices.

My name is Adam Shumski. I'm a full time music teacher and performer with a degree in Music from Temple University. I've toured the world playing music and I work at several different schools in the Philadelphia area teaching percussion and piano.

Yale University and String Pedagogy Master degree at Temple University, I love both teaching and playing.
I'm one of the faculties at Symphony in C Youth Orchestra and St. Malachy School where I work with many different ages and levels of students.
I also teach at Petite Ecole Bilingue Institute working with kids as young as 3 year olds to Kindergarten specializing in early childhood education through music and violin.
I've had my private studio for nearly 10 years from young children to adults.
I'm also an active orchestral player where I'm a member of the Virginia Symphony, Allentown Symphony, Symphony in C and New Jersey Capital Philharmonic.

Through the lessons I help students on understanding the fundamentals of music theory, creating an ideal sound, and musical expression and coordination.
Whether they're trying to just have fun with music, improve their basic skills or prepare auditions such as School or District Orchestra, Youth Orchestra (PYO PYAO or many other local groups), I try to find the best for each students.
Every student is different. I work with students individually and use different approaches for each one of them. Such as methods, repertoire and lesson skills.
But most important of all, I always make sure that my student does not loose interest and have fun making music!

Sophie received her Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Composition from the Manhattan School of Music in 2012, with a minor in Piano. Sophie is currently pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter.

I have learned over the years teaching causes you to truly know your craft in order to convey it to someone else. I enjoy sharing that joy of music with others looking to embark on their own musical journey. I have devised a system for teaching that has proven to be effective among my students.
I start off by gauging what the student knows musically to see what we need to focus on. After that, we work through principles and songs in a systematic and fun way. I give homework and material to work on every lesson to reinforce the work of the day.

Growing up, I studied with a Philadelphia orchestra cellist who prepared me for conservatory auditions. After being accepted into all 7 universities and conservatories I applied to including the Juilliard School, I decided to go to the Cleveland Institute of Music where I got my Bachelors of Music in cello performance. I studied with the former principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and also with one of the best Suzuki pedagogues in the country. I, then, got a Masters in Music in cello performance
In my second year at Northwestern, I won a fellowship, covering my full tuition and acceptance into The Civic Orchestra of Chicago. This is the apprentice orchestra under the Chicago Symphony. We worked with all the conductors that came in to play with the symphony. Yo Yo Ma, the most famous cellist of all time, is the creative consultant for the Civic Orchestra and we got to work with him 4 or 5 times a year.
I have traveled and performed with my string quartet ATLYS representing Lincoln Center in New York City. We have traveled around the world playing crossover music, where we play arrangements of pop, jazz, folk, traditional, rock, indie, alternative, rap, but always return to the forever-beautiful classical quartets, as well.
Because of this, I have learned to play extended techniques on the cello and learned different styles of playing, like Celtic gigs and reels and cool jazzy bass lines. I think this is a fun unique quality that I can add to a student's cello development when studying with me.
I arrange music for string quartet, too. I think it's important for my students to also learn some basic music theory as it can develop a student's understanding of music at a much deeper level. This can make a student appreciate how a piece is created and where a phrase needs tension or where it needs to be released. It's very important for their musicality.

Im a sound engineer at Rittenhouse Soundworks in Philadelphia, originally from London where I honed my craft working in a variety of different studios. Engineering and sound is my absolute passion and I want to share that with you!
Throughout high school, I have repeatedly made the district, regional, and state orchestra always making the best chairs. Since I spent the majority of my life in musical settings I have a firm grasp of musical concepts and would love to share my passion with students who love to learn.

I have been playing folk harp for 20 years and I'm very passionate about all kinds of music ranging from classical to punk rock. In addition to playing the harp I am also a visual artist. I'm inspired by the natural world, especially the beautiful trees and plants that grow around my home in West Philadelphia.
