After studying at William Paterson University, The New School for Jazz, and Bard College, I've discovered that consistently meeting new people and connecting with competent mentors is a better music education than anything a textbook can offer.

As a composer, I treat each piece as a new building with different architecture. Each composition will have unique conventions but start with the same trademark foundation I lay for everything I do.

As a performer, I make sure to play to my strengths and the crowd. At the end of the day we artists perform to entertain and bring people together.

As an educator, I tailor my teaching to fit the specific needs of each student. While foundation is necessary, at the end of the day a good teacher should always have the mentee's goals at the forefront of their approach.

Specialties:

Composition, performance, piano, synthesizer, keyboards, education, arranging, sibelius, logic, music theory, music history, jazz, popular music, production

About John

I believe that by keeping the rest of my life grounded and professional, I can allow my creativity to be as chaotic and potent as is necessary to be a successful artist. Most musicians will tell you that they became artists to pay bills and it was the only thing they were good at. While this is co

A teacher of mine once said if you aim for perfection, you get to be pretty darn good. I like to start with a small amount of material that the student can play very well, and use that to refine the basics. By taking a thorough approach (and playing beautiful music), the entire world of piano and music will slowly and surely open up to the pupil.

In my opinion, tone production and rhythm are the major factors that distinguish a great pianist (and make playing the most satisfying), so this is the major focus of our work. I have a very thorough understanding of proper technique and can prescribe exercises that will strengthen one's weaknesses.

I also have a unique background in that I studied jazz improvisation and classical composition, so I understand the inner workings of the music and can improvise in the styles (jazz, classical, baroque, romantic).

Jorge was a great teacher, he started me off learning clarinet. Very kind, postitve and knew all of his stuff. Would definitely recommend as a teacher.

Jorge tutored me for a few weeks in music theory and it greatly benefited me. He shows through his examples and explanations that he really understands concepts of music theory and keyboard, as well on his clarinet too. I highly recommend hiring Jorge since he goes over the information at a good pace and nice manor. He will go over whatever you need help on.

Dr. Stephanie is insightful with a gentle guidance and encouraging way about her that is magnetic. Her type of instruction is calming while still challenging to my children. I think what is most remarkable is her ability to pull out of a child what they are longing to show the world while still letting them know that these moments of training and practice are also for their inner growth.

My daughter is 12 and just had her first lesson with Dr. Stephanie. We both were so incredibly pleased with the lesson! Dr. Stephanie was warm, welcoming, intelligent and clearly incredibly experienced. My daughter can't stop talking about how much she loved the lesson and she just can't wait for her next one!

I started trying to teach myself piano until I met Ms. Arth. On the very FIRST lesson she pointed out some bad habits and quickly resolved them. This allowed me to reevaluate my technique and iron out the basics. I plan on continuing my studies with Ms.Arth and I highly recommend her for any student beginner or advanced. "Anna is a delight! She is so knowledgeable and I walk away from every lesson feeling liked I gained so much. I couldn’t be happier that I found her. She truly makes you believe you are capable of being a pianist, and as an adult student that can be difficult to believe. But she does. She’s everything a teacher should be, I highly recommend her!"

"Attentive Instructon

I am an adult student and have taken lessons in the past and am starting again. I have enjoyed the personal and attentive instruction given. Susan sits right by the piano and watches every movement. Teachers I have had in the past have not done this. She provides supplemental material that I need. She is always very friendly, kind, patient and has a great deal of professional knowledge. I would recommend her to anyone."

"I have taken lessons with Anna since I was seven years old (currently age 18). I began knowing nothing about the piano or music theory. Neither of my parents can play the piano. I was a beginner in every sense of the word. Now, I have not only a deep love and appreciation for music, but also an advanced musical capacity and repertoire. I have played pieces from a variety of styles and time periods, from Claude Debussy to Mozart to Hadyn to jazz and contemporary. I was able to have a personal high school senior recital and share this love and talent with others. In high school, I completed a music theory and composition course with ease.

I cannot recommend Anna enough. Her dedication and patience is unparalleled and she cares so deeply for her students. She is methodical, attentive, thoughtful, and is an absolute hidden gem of a teacher. Anna opened a world of music to me and I don’t think I can ever truly express how much that means to me. Not only am I a better musician because of her, but I’m also a better person. Her attention to detail and passion have challenged the way that I approach work and hobbies beyond just music.

Anna is particularly skilled as an educator. Beyond simply giving information for students to practice or memorize, she helps them apply the concepts to real musical pieces, guiding them along the way. Her calm but advanced method of teaching helps students advance quickly through musical concepts.

Over the past eleven years, I have spent literally hundreds of hours with Anna honing my craft. If anyone has seen the extent of her talent as a teacher, I’d like to think it’s me.

Five stars out of five stars. Always."

How to Read Piano Notes & Sheet Music: 5 Easy Steps for Beginners

But how do you make those musical dreams become a reality?  Whether you want to casually play the piano at a party or tickle the ivory like a professional in a dimly-lit cocktail lounge, reading sheet music is the first step. Knowing how to …
