I can help you make the sounds that you need to fill out any performance or arrangement, all with the instrument we're all born with. I blend my knowledge of singing (most importantly breath support) and drums and to stitch together a personalized curriculum full of tinkering and guess & check.

I was a founding member of the collegiate a cappella group, The University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers, and for several years, sang with Manhattan-based contemporary a cappella groups Invisible Men and Dobsonfly (heard in the film “The Rules of Attraction”).

My teaching approach: I'll help you figure out your musical goals, and customize a lesson plan to get you there (ex: performance technique, music theory, music business coaching, musicology, exploring new musical genres, song selection and interpretation).

Jason vocally coached me during many studio sessions over the years. Not only is he an excellent musician in diverse genres, but he is patient, attentive, and communicates clearly. He knows how to give the right amount of support to help vocalists find their very best sound and style for a particular genre. I would recommend Jason for any singer looking to generally improve their voice, prepare for an audition, recording, or performance.

My beatbox instruction will start with the fundamentals of rhythm and establishing a groove. Beginners will learn to master basic bass drum, snare, and cymbal sounds, working on breathing and coordination of sounds. We will also study some of the beatbox masters and explore microphone vs acoustic techniques. For advanced students we will explore different time signatures, special effects, world influences, metric modulations and superimposition over a variety of styles.

Beat Box: (Cajón)
A box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru, played by slapping the front or rear faces with the hands, fingers, or sometimes various implements such as brushes, mallets, or sticks.
Cajones are primarily played in Afro-Peruvian music, as well as contemporary styles of flamenco and jazz among other genres. The term cajón is also applied to other unrelated box drums used in Latin American music such as the cajón de rumba used in Cuban rumba and the cajón de tapeo used in Mexican folk music.
Learning will be fun as the Cajon is pretty easy to learn. Hand techniques and rhythms will be the primary focus as well as playing along with songs and even learning to solo!

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!
