I have extensive training in improvisational acting from East Carolina University in North Carolina and I've been teaching acting students since 2007. Students learn quick thinking, free movement, and artistic expression through acting exercises and games.

About Heather M.
More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life'
s work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals.

Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.
The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I recently (2014) studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.
Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, and monologue and audition coaching. Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

About Amy
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and have recently completed my Master's degree in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, whether it be through singing, acting, or writing. I share with my student's tools to gain the abilit
y and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those areas for most of my adult life. I believe, it is the teacher's job to respect each student's individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, Blues and cabaret artists, and published writers.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercises come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the apter they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents
-practice studio seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.

Expect to be thrown out into the Improv world. I love Improv, it is one the main things I love about acting. You are able to just come up and pretend to be all kinds of people. I have been teaching acting for over 5 years now. I started off as an actress and decided I wanted to help others fulfill their dreams. I started a production company where I direct and write stage play. I mainly work with individuals with little to no training and develop them into great performers. My students love my style of teaching because I don't push in a hard way and treat them with respect. My goal is to help you or your child fulfill their dreams of acting. I believe that "You Are Good Enough".

About Deloris
Deloris is a firm believer in the mantra, “You Are Good Enough”. She believes that every individual is blessed with unique talents and attributes that enable them to attain any level of success they desire. She has dedicated herself to helping others use their God-given talents to entertain and inspire.

Improvisation is one of my absolute favorite skills to work on! I won a Governor's Award for Improvisational pairs when I was young and I really caught the bug! In these classes, I use games and activities to relieve the stress and anxiety associated with improv. By request, I can rework this class to specialize in applied improv, i.e. public speaking as well.

About Joy
My name is Joy Weir and I have been involved in theatre and acting for the last decade. I have been teaching acting and theatrical skills to children as well as coaching friends and colleagues for even longer. I am available for group classes as well, please contact me for info and rates.

As a teaching artist for children I have worked with Yes! And... Collaborative Arts, ASAP Drama, Rehoboth Summer Children's Theatre, Theatre Horizon, White Pines Productions, and I even began my own curriculum at the Lansdowne YMCA. I have worked with children ages 4-18 in various classes, workshops, and performances.

As far as coaching friends and colleagues, I focus on audition monologues and fundamental acting techniques and skills.

I received a Theatre Performance Scholarship at Drexel University and I have appeared in performances with P
hiladelphia Artists' Collective and Simpatico Theatre Project. I am also a member of the improv group, Tongue & Groove.

I worked with Joy during her directed production of "dtf" as a part of Drexel University's Director's Lab performance during fall of 2016. Joy was an absolute blast to work with and was extremely encouraging during the course of our rehearsals leading up to the performance. She really helped my scene partner and I to explore our characters on a much deeper level than what was proactively displayed on stage. I felt that it helped me immensely as an actor during the show as I felt much more comfortable in my position on stage and more "in-tune" with my character. Joy is a wonderful director who puts in maximum effort for directing and takes a personal and effective approach to actor preparation for her productions!

A couple years ago my son was cast as the Grinch in a school production. I found her thru Facebook. She gave him 2 lessons and then spent time with him on the phone. Mark is a great kid but he has autism so it can be a challenge. Patricia had experience working with special needs students and I must say she was impressive. Marky took to her right away, she didn't talk down to him, but was a cool friend as well as a teacher. She brought him out of that shell and gave him a lot of attention, was patient and understanding with him. I was proud when he did his thing at school. Highly recommend her especially good with kids. My only issue was scheduling. For the first lesson I was hoping she could come to us and we lived too far then I did have to wait a week or so to book another time but we did get in a couple lessons in time for his show.

Have you always had that itch that makes you stay up late a night dreaming about what your life could be if you followed your dreams? Is your child overly dramatic and they need a creative outlet? No fear, Valeka J Holt is here. I'm a professional broadway, tv and film actress. I have over 10 years of experience in teaching acting and I want to teach you how to be comfortable in your skin and follow your dreams!

About Valeka
Affectionately known as “V” critically acclaimed artist Valeka is a graduate of the prestigious University of Washington’s Professional Actor Training Program (PATP). While obtaining her MFA in Acting, Valeka began her professional career with roles in many award-winning shorts and independent features including "Attachments," and "So Many Options" among others.

Adept in theater, film, acting, coaching, writing, and producing, Valeka is an artist with some serious promise. She stars as Eileen in the film "The Runaways," working with award winning cinematographer, Mike Wilson. In addition to being a Jet Beauty of the Week, Valeka is the current DC Co-Captain of Ava Duverney’s distribution company ARRAY. Additionally, her documentary film “Non-Critical” premiered at Cannes in the Short Film Documentary Corner, and it received the 2015 J
ury Award.

Previous credits include a host of theater roles, notably the role of Nina in acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau's "Sunset Baby." Broadway world stated "Playing the role of Nina is Valeka who is astonishing. I predict a great future is ahead of her. One gets to see her transformation from the hardened criminal to that of a young woman who has just lost her mother, when she strips herself from her make-up, wig, and clothes into a bathrobe, sits on her couch, covers herself in a wrap which was covering the couch and weeps. It's a powerful moment." DC Metro Arts stated "Valeka walks the trickiest line when it comes to winning our sympathy as Nina. But she will reduce you to a puddle in one scene when she comes upon a photo of herself as a toddler with her father, and suddenly all the pain of her childhood is reeled back and her face blossoms with a shy, girlish delight." Maryland Theatre guide states “Valeka is one of the most relaxed and unselfconscious actors I’ve seen on stage - ever... She is sensual and powerful – a performance to remember.”

Finding an Acting Coach in Los Angeles is a daunting and overwhelming process. For me, I set out to find someone who's approach resonated with me as well as pushed and challenged me, helping me deepen my craft and boost my self-confidence. I needed to find a coach with whom I could form a relationship, who could provide an environment where I felt comfortable to receive feedback, to allow myself to be vulnerable and to take risks. I wanted a coach who could facilitate growth and help take my career to the next level. And, of course, I wanted to find someone who is qualified and knows what they are doing. Valeka was recommended through a fellow actor, and it was the best referral ever! Her knowledge is incredible and she is always willing to help. Since working with Valeka, I have been constantly going on auditions and FINALLY getting called back. I can't recommend Valeka enough, and if my word is not enough, reach out to her.
