I am a professional composer and I teach music theory and composition at the Juilliard School. I've worked (and continue to work) with Charlotte Mundy on vocal projects first and foremost because I adore her stunning sound and her incredible range of style and expression. But it’s an amazing bonus that she is also so great to work with. Charlotte is insightful, constructive, flexible, positive, articulate about her ideas, and dedicated to excellent results, yet easygoing and friendly. I started singing lessons with Charlotte as a complete novice with no musical background and feel like I lucked out finding her. She's an excellent, patient teacher that lets you go in directions you want and makes other paths seem accessible. A lot of our classes would be me playing a song I liked, envying Charlotte as she instantly deciphered the notes, and then learning it back in key. It was super fun.

She is a teacher first and foremost and doesn't sing during lessons, but on occasion when I didn't understand an exercise or progression and asked her to sing it- my god. She has a voice that makes the air in the room change.

Highly recommended.

I have been teaching voice for about 5 years now, and am an active performer myself in music theatre and opera. In lessons I work with my students on singing without counterproductive tension and learning to use their breath to support the sound in a way that’s healthy and will keep them singing their whole lives. Singing and playing piano have always been a huge part of my life. I love to perform everything from opera and sacred music to music theater and jazz, and have been performing since I was very young. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music in vocal performance from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. It was there that I fell in love with teaching, when I taught my first student as part of a course in vocal pedagogy. Since then I have built my studio to over 20 voice and piano students here in NY and CT. It has been thrilling to see all the progress they've made! I just completed my Masters of Music at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College.

I have had several excellent and truly inspiring teachers myself with different teaching styles, and so I have a variety of approaches to drawn upon in helping my own students. Vocal techni
que was not something that came easy for me, and was something I had to really work on. This work on technique has made me a stronger teacher. I know how many different approaches it can take to make something click, so I use the diverse experiences of my own studies to find what works best for each student. While I am classically trained, I am comfortable teaching all types of singers, because I believe that at its core, what makes a singer great is the same between all genres. My number one goal in teaching is to help my students use their voice in a way that is healthy and allows them the greatest ability for expression, because ultimately, I believe that is what music is about.

Although singing has been a big part of my professional work in the past few years, I have also been playing classical piano since I was four and still love to play and share this love with my students. Most of my students are piano students, and I love seeing the progress they've made over the years. Students that started with me as beginners a few years ago are now reading music with confidence and playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

I am an active performer and am able to draw upon this experience in my teaching. This summer I performed in Manhattan with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble and won 2nd prize in their dell'Arte/Jeiven Awards. Past roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Brooklyn College and Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Other roles include April in Company with Westport Community Theatre, Despina (cover) in Mozart's Così fan tutte for Connecticut Lyric Opera, the messenger in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at DePaul University, and Maria in West Side Story with the McLeod Summer Playhouse. I have a special love for early music and have performed oratorio by Bach with the DePaul Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Bethesda Music Series in New Haven. I also participated in the prestigious Amherst Early Music Festival for two years. I have performed abroad in Austria and Italy, and speak French, Italian, and some German. Because of my experience on stage in opera , music theatre, and recitals, I understand the skills it takes to engage an audience and create a well-rounded performance. I am thus an asset to any student preparing for a contest, audition, or stage appearance.

Singing is an extension of speech. Good breath support is needed. Vowels and consonants are two best friends for the singer. Even though I am classically trained as a singer, I have explored successfully other vocal genres like popular and jazz. Though a singer, I am first a music educator. Most times, I learn along with my students and I enjoy what I do. Rudiments of singing are taught right away and reinforced with each lesson. Beside vocal technique, the student is exposed to various genres of music as well as singing music the student wants to sing. Technology is used for recording, listening, and performance.

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyb

*** Lesson Details ***
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. Therefore, it is my job as the instructor to inspire them to practice and benefit from each and every lesson. Whether it be vocal or piano instruction, each lesson consists of fun warm-ups, interesting technical exercises, and repertoire of all sorts. What the student learns in 3-6 months depends upon the motivation of the student as well as my ability to teach what the student needs to know in order to achieve their goals as a pianist and/or vocalist. Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle C method for players of all levels. Those who are more advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play music that they enjoy.

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

I feel so lucky to find Amanda as my son's first piano teacher. She is great with kids and make my 3 year old boy fall in love with piano now through her great teaching skills and interesting "animal story books" designed specifically for young children to learn piano. It's been only 2 months since Ethan's first piano class with her, and he's already playing with both hands and a lot of kids songs like "twinkle twinkle little star", "London bridge is falling down", "old McDonald had a farm"...Thank you Amanda!

The piano teacher for a lifetime

Amanda is an amazing teacher. I went back to taking piano lessons at the age of 45 and Amanda has been an incredibly patient, generous, intelligent and warm teacher. She is very personable, extremely knowledgeable about music, and the lessons are individually tailored so that I get the most out of them. I have learned so much as her pupil and I am growing (slowly!) as a pianist. Amanda has made this process enjoyable, fulfilling, and yes...fun!

We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Every lesson I teach is tailored to the individual needs of the singer, both vocally and artistically. Students will receive a vocal workout specific to their voice type and vocal issues. Additionally, I offer students training for auditions, songwriting, recording technique, and performances. Past students h ave gone on to perform on broadway, national tours and American Idol.

About Emily
Emily has been working professionally for over 15 years and teaching for nearly as long. Professionally, she has worked with labels like Universal and Sony, and with artists like Katy Perry and Billy Joel. Former students have gone on to perform on Broadway, national tours and American Idol.

Every student's individual voice and style is taken in to consideration when forming their training. No two voices are alike, and thus, no two lessons should be alike.

Emily will focus on helping you find the strengths in your voice and then finding and overcoming your weaknesses. Emily is a firm believer, that the voice is a muscle system that must be worked and strengthened, just like any other; and she will provide you with the proper strength training to achieve your artistic goals.

Emily Carlstrom is a total badass. I've taken a handful of voice lessons with her. They were so simple, yet so extremely helpful and motivating. She really knows how to listen and that makes her a great friend, artist and teacher.

I teach all styles of voice, including musical theater, pop, classical, and opera. I believe that breathing is the most integral part of singing, and I bring to each lesson the understanding that the voice is a muscle that needs to be patiently trained, much like you would do a physical workout in a gym. Typically, I begin lessons with warm-ups tailored to each student’s skill level and goals. Then, we work on pieces related to the student’s interest, generally including one classical piece and one contemporary piece, analyzing the similarities between these styles and applying the same skills to both. Students can expect to see improvement in their projection, style, diction, musicality, and performance practice. My students enjoy our lessons together because they leave each lesson with a clearer direction that they can apply to the songs they desire to sing.

I am an opera singer and private music instructor in New York City.

I cater my lessons to my students’ individual goals, firmly believing that a strong framework in classical technique can support any style of music. I love watching my students become passionate about music, achieve their goals, and reach their greatest potential as musicians. Using my experience and flexibility, I create a learning environment that is both engaging and fun.

I developed a passion for music at a young age and have been studying piano for 18 years. I received my BA in Language and Culture with a double minor in Vocal/Opera Performance and Italian, as well as my MA in Vocal Performance. While earning my MA, I coached voice, piano, and language diction to the undergraduate and masters students.
