Juan is wonderful and very knowledgeable in music. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. I leave a lesson feeling like I am accomplished and relaxed. It nice to see progress in such a little time. I go home with enthusiasm to learn more and want practice to do so.
Chrystine R.
With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

Juan is awesome. He makes learning guitar easy and never complicates it .. and makes it fun. He's a great teacher.

Want to learn how music works behind the scenes? Music theory is the study of what makes up music from a note by note basis. Many topics of music branch under music theory, from reading music and rhythms, understanding basic chords and chord progression, to arranging and composing piano solos, orchestral works, or jazz reharmonization. I have studied music theory intensively and can teach it from a pure beginner's standpoint to an advanced collegiate level.

About Jorge

I have over 10 years of experience on the Clarinet and other reed instruments. I am have a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and have studied classical clarinet as well as saxophone under various professors at the college. I al

Polina is an amazing teacher. I learned so much in my first lesson. She's encouraging but honest, which is perfect for those who want real feedback to improve. Can't wait for my next lesson!

Only a few times in your lifetime, you come across a person who changes your perspective. Polina is such a person. She introduced to music that I can create by myself. Music of grand masters which I attempt to play and eventually perfect. When Polina teaches, all things come easier. Her encouragement, her patience, her helpful hints make you feel like you are her best student. You learn, you improve and you succeed. Every lesson is enjoyable and you cannot wait for the next.

Polina is so knowledgeable and informative. We jumped right in and she gave me great feedback on a piece I’ve been working on for a while. She is very motivational and I am excited to continue to work with her and improve my technique and ability.

My goal is to help my students develop a deeper love for and understanding of music. I like to work on the music they already know and love and also help to introduce them to new musical directions.

About Isaac

As I’ve developed my teaching style over the last ten years, I’ve found myself zeroing in on a few key qualities I want to cultivate in my students and in my self. These include great ears, a high proficiency on the instrument, and a strong and interactive sense of musicality. At the center of my p

Isaac knows his stuff. He has been great in teaching music theory and piano. Easy to get in contact with and flexible in scheduling.
Greg A.
Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.
Victoria Danberg
I have just begun lessons with Isaac. He is an excellent teacher; attuned to my needs, very good at explaining things, patient, very good at getting me to understand what I need to know. I look forward to learning upright bass with him!

I am a first time stringed instrument student. Zander has a talent for structuring lessons to make me 'work' to see progress. He is patient and answers my questions in a manner that make sense. I'm fortunate to have connected with him. Given his multi instrument proficiency and obvious knowledge base I can't help but recommend his teaching skills.

"Hi Everyone,
I’d like to tell all about what a wonderful experience I’m having with Tamari as my piano teacher.
First about me. I’m a 70 year old male with virtually no hands-on music experience or knowledge (other than listening). My parents forced me to take piano music lessons 60+ years ago which I totally resisted. Playing piano was a sissy thing and after a few months they gave up.
For the past 50 years I regretted my youthful error. So when I had the chance to take a piano/keyboard class from Tamari, through OLLI at Uconn I jumped at the chance.
Tamari started the first class totally prepared. Not only did she have startup handouts geared to beginner level students. She also came with extension cords and power outlet strips so all could set up comfortably. Right away we (9) were playing notes and learning. Tamari gave us terrific learning tips (beyond Every Good Boy Does Fine) to make grasping lessons much easier.
Sadly, the Virus hit, and self-isolation became the norm. So Tamari set up her classes through the ZOOM video conferencing software. Wonderfully, a fun learning experience.
One example from yesterday. Tamari helped me learn that just playing the notes , G A G C B by pecking at the keys isn’t music. There’s a certain rhythm needed to make the sound correct and enjoyable. And after, patiently, staying with me, turn after turn, I got it right. Bravo to her and me.
Let me wrap this up by saying, I couldn’t be happier or more satisfied with Tamari as my Piano teacher.
Ralph A Famiglietti."

"As Jim states on his bio, he teaches from age 8 and up. I'm one of his "up" students who's been playing guitar for a few years, but never took time to learn theory because I thought it was too confusing or difficult to learn. After being stuck in a rut for the past 30 years, I finally realized that I could be a guitar player, instead of just playing guitar, by understanding WHY I'm playing what I playing. I planned to take a few lessons to see how it would go. That was 4 months ago. Now when I pick up my guitar, I have a plan and am excited to learn more each week. Jim's approach to teaching theory makes it clear for anyone of any age or expertise. If you're young and want to learn the right way, Jim will teach you the right way. For us older folks, I found out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... I highly recommend Jimmy!"

"Billy is the absolute best! Transcribing rhythms and ear training analysis have always been my weaknesses when it comes to music theory knowledge and finding the right exercises and techniques to improve has always been quite a difficult process to achieve. However, within just a few tutoring lessons from Billy, I started to build a better understanding of music theory as a whole. In every tutoring lesson, Billy was patient, knowledgeable and friendly which quickly benefited my musicality and strengthened my overall friendship and love with music. Thank you Billy!"

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …
