Hi! I'm Michael Shingo C. and I am a violinist, pianist, and composer.

In my teaching, I emphasize efficient, goal-oriented practice, and provide a strong technical foundation while always keeping musicality and expression in mind. I encourage my students to develop problem-solving skills that will ultimately allow them to create their own interpretations about a piece of music. I believe that each student has a different learning style and, with this knowledge, I design a program of study specifically for them.

Learning music is all about tackling technical or musical problems in many different ways until we find an approach that works for you. As multi-instrumentalist who also writes music, I can offer many different perspectives on a single issue and draw from a wide range of knowledge that serves me in my daily creative pursuits.

About Michael

Hello I'm Michael! I am a violinist and composer with a diverse skill set and 17 years of experience. I learn and grow as I pass on my knowledge and constantly find ways to better serve my students and help them achieve their goals.

I have been a student of Michael’s for approximately 7 months. My only previous experience with violin had been one year in elementary school band class and 8 months with a private teacher. When my private teacher’s lesson schedule changed, I was introduced to Michael and was greatly impressed by his skill level and teaching style. I have learned so much more than I had expected in each lesson, like how to self-tune, use a metronome, shift, and various other techniques. Michael constantly offers feedback on how I can execute techniques better, and I feel that this helps me to learn more effectively. He is always challenging me by giving me harder pieces and scales. I have even been told by my high school orchestra conductor that I have improved so much and she is constantly surprised by how fast I am learning. I highly recommend having Michael as a teacher for anyone looking to learn how to play the violin.

I am a dedicated, fun, and loving teacher who has been teaching for over 13 years. I inspire my students to learn to love music and also to love the hard work and dedication that comes with playing music at a high level. I believe music teaches us incredible life skills and I try to share that with my students, and use music as a tool to help them learn to unlock the highest potential they hold within themselves. Through music, together we can explore how each student learns and approaches the world, and we can help them learn to harness their strengths and work on their weaknesses. Also - learning is fun! I work hard to bring as much joy and enthusiasm to my lessons as I possibly can - I believe that the connection between a student and mentor is very special and I respect and admire all that each new student brings to the table.

About Linnea

*Currently accepting students to start in mid-august 2021!* Note: I realize we are heading into an unpredictable school year and I am flexible with in-person and online lessons. I highly prefer in-person for the students’ sake, but we will take circumstances as they come! Hi! My name is Linnea

Ms. Clarice is an all-star teacher and a extremely talented violinist. I had the honor of working with Clarice as an undergrad student at Arizona State University. Clarice was the teaching assistant for Danwen Jiang's Violin Studio. Clarice helped shape me to the violinist I am today, she helped instill a confidence in me I did not have before. She helped bring out passion to my playing in my performances. Clarice has a vast knowledge of violin pedagogy, technique, repertoire and music theory. Ms. Clarice loves each of her students and it shows through her character, you can tell she truly loves what she does and has a passion for teaching music. I feel what makes taking lessons with me unique is my experience teaching private violin and viola lessons in Texas public schools (grades 6-12) and my career as a professional musician having performed in many orchestral, opera, and chamber music settings. Through the lens of that performed experience, I know how crucial an education that includes classical music can be in a student’s overall academic development and maturation. Though not everyone pursues music as a career, no matter the student’s age, I wish to ultimately be a positive support system in fostering their development in their mirrored desirability to make classical music and incorporate it's richness and beauty into their life.

As a adult student, I have a bit advantage at understanding the theory relatively easily. Maybe also have the willingness to practice on my own. But on the other side, the stiffness of fingers and the frustration of “I know I should do that but just couldn’t “ are common scenarios too. Maggie could adjust the pace and the materials based on my progress which helps a lot. She is also put equally emphasis on both technic and the understanding of music itself, which makes studying piano a vey enjoyable experience.

The lesson went by really well. Maggie is a really good teacher, she is patient and efficient. My daughter really enjoyed her lesson.

Maggie came to teach my 5 year old daughter her very first lesson. I was impressed with how much she covered in a half hour! My daughter was really not interested but Maggie was patient and able to get her hold the violin, learn it's parts, play some notes and even read a line of music! Kudos to Maggie.

What is a Vintage Violin, and How Are They Different?

I am often asked if my violin is an antique or a vintage violin. Well, first of all, let’s define exactly what is antique or vintage. These seemingly nebulous terms do, in fact, have more precise definitions. An antique dealer, as well as the U.S. Customs Service, will tell you that the item must be at least 100 years old to be considered an antique. So today, an antique violin would have to have been made in 1921 or earlier. The word vintage is slightly more subjective though. The word itself …
