My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- notice i say theory, not rules. learning music theory is not about learning rigid rules that will stifle your creativity. when you learn theory, you learn to identify patterns and give them names so you can remember and reuse them. the more you know your theory, the more ways you know to express your ideas
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally. and really, why would you not want to be the best you can be?

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

5 lessons in and David has gotten me to break through some of my bad techniques and has also given me completely different ways to think about my instrument. We're just getting started and I couldn't be more excited to see where this journey is going to take my skills.

If you are seeking to develop the skills necessary to become a competent guitarist that can find comfortability playing in any genre, you have come to the right place! I am a touring rock and metal musician and have been playing guitar and drums professionally for 14+ years, with 4 LPs under my belt along with numerous singles, splits and EPs. In my lessons, we will explore various techniques and topics ranging from basic music theory topics like the circle of fifths to advanced techniques such as sweep picking and tapping. I emphasize not only understanding the skills one needs to play their favorite riffs but developing an ear for relative pitch, songwriting and the tone one desires to achieve what they are hearing in their head. My genre specializations are in rock and heavy metal. All skill levels are welcome!

About Nicholas

Hey there! My name is Nick Z. and I am a gigging guitarist, drummer, and songwriter in various rock and metal bands. I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

I'm a specialist in Brazilian Guitar and have played and used American Folk Styles to teach finger picking for many years. This includes Travis Picking, Blues and arrangement of all sorts of melodies for guitar. One of the first world musics I played was Irish music and I have a nice repertoire of these melodies to help the student learn how to play a linear melody. Reading is not necessary but I'm expert at getting people to read by using simple familiar music. I have been playing Jazz acoustically fingerstyle for a while and have been a good understanding of Swing guitar styles too. Repertoire and recordings are essential in the process. This I also provide to the student

I was a beginner wanting to learn some Brazilian guitar: samba, bossa nova, etc. Billy was great for that as a very accomplished guitarist of that genre. He is very engaging and enthusiastic. He was patient with me in working on the difficult chords and strumming that this type of music requires. Having literally, "written the book", he had an organized approach. I also enjoyed his humor and occasional stories about guitarist he has know. Acho que ele tem Jeito para ensinar violao.

I purchased the lessons for my 9 yr old son. He has never played the piano or any instrument before these lessons. Joshua is very talented in his field but I feel he needs to work on his patience. He was always professional but his tone and expressions made my son nervous. I had to stop the classes and loose my payments. I wanted to push my son to finish the classes, however, I didn’t want him to loose his love of music. I hope this comment helps to improve the next person’s experience.

I was surprised that my lesson could be cancelled without any communication. This is our first experience with piano lessons and was excited to try it for the first time. ;(

My son has had 2 lessons so far. Joshua has worked with him at the level he is at and helped him when he gets stuck on certain chords and notes. He assigned homework for him to practice during the week and helped him figure out the parts he was stuck on.

"John Krauss has been teaching our 4th grade boy acoustic guitar for the past year. When he started, our son could not clap a rhythm to save his life but now is learning to strum on beat and follow along with lessons successfully. John challenges our 9 year old with different styles and techniques that push him to the next level. He encourages our child in a warm and respectful way. We appreciate John's professionalism and patience with working with a young student. We highly recommend him. "John is a nice guy who helps me learn new chords and licks. I like my lessons!" says the 4th grader."
