Kevin will help you unlock the potential in your voice and get you to a place of confidence while singing

I can't recommend Kevin enough, especially for someone like me, who's returning to voice lessons after many years. Kevin has debunked the prior myths I had about the voice and singing and I now feel confident to sing after a few warm ups and an hour of being awake and talking. Kevin has really simplified the singing process for me while also teaching me techniques that keep singing challenging and invigorating. My voice is the strongest, most authentic, and most consistent its ever been and I definitely owe that to training with Kevin.

A creative, patient, and talented teacher

I started singing when I first entered college, and I fell in love with it. My only problem was that I didn't have the experience or the knowledge on how to develop my voice. I have always wanted to be on stage singing and acting in musical theatre shows, but I didn't think I had the talent for it. Kevin helped to change this for me.

Kevin took me under his wing and right away my voice began to improve. I had a richer, deeper resonance and I started to be able to find control over my voice, my flexibility and range increased, and I started to find the carefree, easy singing voice that people strive towards.

Lessons with Kevin were always enjoyable. He is one of the most supportive people I know, and he has a way of making you feel good about yourself even if your voice is cracking or being uncooperative. I remember one time, I went to sing an F above the staff and my voice just broke completely and some really terrible sound came out. All Kevin said was, "There's that frog!" and we laughed it off and continued with the lesson.

One of the best aspects of Kevin's teaching is his ability to explain concepts clearly. He provides many different viewpoints for addressing issues with the voice and can clearly articulate solutions to your specific vocal needs.

In addition to being able to teach well, Kevin is also a very talented singer. He uses a lot of vocal models in his lessons (which only enhanced his ability to communicate concepts clearly), and I was always blown a way with how rich and resonant his voice was. I envied his ability to transition smoothly throughout all the ranges of the voice.

I know that I was not Kevin's easiest student to teach, but thanks to him I now have the confidence and the skill to get up in front of people and sing my heart out, and actually sound good! Last summer I landed the role of Rolf in our community theatre production of The Sound of Music. This would not have been possible without Kevin.

I learned more in 2 years than all of my years in singing

I started taking voice lessons with Kevin when I was a Junior in college. I had been seeing a voice teacher in NYC who had worked for years with many professional singers on Broadway. So, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started working with a grad student from the school of music (which mostly focuses on classical voice). I wanted to learn about classical voice but, I mostly wanted to continue working on musical theatre songs. So, I wasn't sure how much I could learn from a grad student who was young and learning about voice himself.

Kevin exceeded my expectations. On my first day with Kevin, I was nervous because all of my voice teachers in the past had been strict and would even occasionally yell at me. So, I could never fully be comfortable at a voice lesson because I had always been afraid to make mistakes. Kevin puts you at ease right away with his friendly and bubbly demeanor. He encourages you to give it your all and applauds mistakes and cracks because it means you are trying and getting to a new place in your voice that you're not used to. Kevin wanted to work on what I wanted to work on, however, he was also able to teach me things I had never been taught before with my old teacher like newer concepts and simply how to sing with a richer voice. Kevin was able to help me with all kinds of singing as he is trained in musical theatre, classical, and opera.

I knew I could also count on Kevin because of how honest he would be with me. He would tell me his honest thoughts about my work and any shows he came to see me in. I valued Kevin's opinion because he was ALWAYS straightforward with me.

Not only was Kevin a great teacher but, he was SO supportive of me. Kevin came to my rehearsals and performances to give me tips on how I could improve my performance and coached me on characterization singing. He even agreed to meet with me outside of our normal lessons if I ever needed help with an audition piece.

I could honestly go on and on about how wonderful Kevin was and I am so sad that I can no longer have him as my voice teacher due to distance. However, the things Kevin has taught me will always stay with me and I am sure I will use everything he has taught me for years to come.

I HIGHLY recommend Kevin R. as a voice teacher. No matter what kind of singer you want to be or how experienced or trained you are Kevin will meet your personal needs to help you reach your goals. He will challenge you, motivate you, and leave you feeling proud of what you accomplished. I learned more in the two years I worked with Kevin than I did in all of my years of singing. Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

Hello and welcome all! My name is Cory Jacobs, I'm a Brooklyn born guitarist, educator, and composer, and I'm thrilled that you are reading this, because that means you're interested in pursuing music. *** Lesson Details ***
I teach musical fundamentals and basic technique to all of beginner students, as well as discuss practice methodology, listening practice, and musical style. We will be delving into rudiments quite a bit, but using riffs, melodies, and applicable chord progressions to learn. Learning to read musical notation is not necessary for many musical goals, but we can pursue that route if desired, and it is highly encouraged for a comprehensive musical understanding.

For intermediate students will likely want or need to work on specific things, ie technique, learning specific songs, music theory, learning the ins and outs of specific genres, composition, improvisation. My specialties include pop, rock, metal, funk, jazz, and classical guitar.

I am very open to regular communication with my students to answer questions, share recommended listening or reading, and of course, be on top of scheduling and logistics. I try my best to make our time together a rewarding and fun experience, and to pass forward the great fortune of learning music.

REALLY...

He has been unreliable from the start. He was out of town then when he got back, I had to keep emailing to get an appointment even set up. So far only one lesson in over a month.
My reason was to learn to sing one song and music performance... NOT music theory. I knew going in I had bad pitch but since I am not looking to be a professional singer just learn to perform one song the best to my ability... more jazzy.

Well, He is stuck in his ways and will only be my teach if I am willing to stick to the basic until he thinks I am ready. He also though me wanting to learn how to perform the song that I picked because... I like the style and think it will help me with acting, as if I wanted him to be an acting coach. Really...

Now I have already paid for lessons with him so I hope things can turn around. Teaching is a gift that is more then just technical knowledge.

I guess if your interest is musical theater you might do better with him....

My daughter has had only two lessons with Simona but the benefit is easy to see. There is a passion for excellence that is being instilled but keeping the lessons fun. This is hard to accomplish but Simona is doing it. She has been very cooperative and helpful in scheduling lessons. It has been a pleasure so far and I look forward to great reviews in the future. I highly recommend this teacher!

My approach to music education is one that puts musical expression first and then applies technique as appropriate to an individual's virtues. Oboe in particular is an instrument whose complexity lends itself to dogmatic approaches that can stifle individual growth. This is because the oboe is an instrument that requires constant fine tuning and adjustment, both of the instrument itself and the reeds that one plays. In this way, oboe is very much a craft, more than just a consumable product. As an expert in instrument adjustment and reed making, I can help students overcome the fundamental difficulties of playing oboe and focus on the most important aspect, which is making music.

Greetings, future students. I've been teaching piano for 30 years. I'm a professional pianist working mostly in Manhattan's major hotels. I play all styles of music and so I can teach all styles. Classical (I was accepted to the Juilliard Preparatory School at age 12), pop, jazz, blues, Broadway etc. I believe that learning to play the piano should be an enjoyable experience. Tereza Lee, at the time a graduate piano student at the Manhattan School of Music, was Josh’s primary piano teacher and mentor, and helped him prepare for college, university and conservatory auditions. At age 18, after playing the piano for only two years, Josh received offers of admission from six conservatory programs to study piano performance, most notably from the Manhattan School of Music and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Josh chose to attend Carnegie Mellon, where in 2009 he was one of only three piano students to gain admission to the University’s School of Music. That same year, Josh became a Hadar Scholar,
receiving financial support from the Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation to pursue his undergraduate music studies.

Josh graduated from Carnegie Mellon with University and College Honors. He also received a merit scholarship to study with pianist Sandra Shen at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C., where he studied for three summers, and performed solo and collaborative piano repertoire. While there, he studied further with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professor, pianist Norman Krieger. Josh’s teachers at Carnegie Mellon were Sergey Schepkin and Ralph Zitterbart.

Josh is currently on the faculty of Church Street School for Music and Art in Manhattan, where he teaches piano, and Dan’s Music Studio in West Orange, N.J, where, in addition to piano, he uses music as therapy to help students with disabilities.

Josh also offers private piano lessons. Josh reaches students in New York City, and Essex and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.

We have found Josh to be very thoughtful and patient. He spends time to build the concepts rather than rushing through lessons. We are quite satisfied and would recommend his classes.

Josh is a great instructor for our daughter. He puts a tremendous amount of thought into presenting his lessons in a way she can learn and absorb them.

We have seen how learning music has had such a positive impact on her life, beyond the technical skills of playing the piano and we attribute that to Josh's patience and flexibility.
