For the past seven years, my performance career has primarily focused on Cuban Timba. In addition to my real-world experience with the genre, I have held multiple lectures and seminars on the style at universities across New York State as well as online. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to participate in this wonderful genre in such an extensive way, something few outsiders have been able to do. For that reason I am especially passionate about sharing the knowledge I've acquired with others.
I also specialize in jazz improvisation and other styles of "world music" including Afro-Peruvian, Venezuelan and even some styles from southeastern Europe.
As a teacher I emphasize technique, reading, rhythm and creating an organized practice routine. I'm also a strong advocate of transcription, especially of repertoire, which key when studying any style of music.
I also hope to inspire my students to become independent in following there own musical curiosity, regardless of what ...

Along with being incredibly knowledgeable, Alex has the patience and communication skills that really make him excel as a teacher. As a complete beginner to the upright bass (and music in general), I find Alex breaks concepts down in a clear, step-by-step fashion, so that it is not overwhelming. He also gives useful tips on how to be a better learner when tackling challenges, which helps make my personal practice even more effective. Alex is approachable and eager to answer questions even in between classes - I highly recommend him as teacher!"

broad range of experience. As a teacher myself (English), I really appreciate those qualities. Her experience across multiple instruments and music genres is especially appealing to me, as I play several instruments and am interested in many types of music. She gives me hope that I can develop some facility on

Kyle was able to take me from sounding like a lower octave version of Jack Benny (a mid-20th century comedian famous for his howlingly horrid violin playing) to a level where I know how to hold the instrument and the bow, the fingerings, bowing technique, and how to get a very respectable sound from the instrument.
He also installed the strings when I received the new instrument, found a manufacturing flaw in the bridge height that the manufacturer subsequently paid to repair, and diagnosed a resonance issue with the instrument that was corrected with a balance weight on the string below the bridge."
