I then went on to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where I earned my Masters degree in Piano Performance in 1987. My name is Victoria. I'm originally from beautiful San Diego, California, but I am now a full time professional musician based out of Philadelphia. I've instructed students (of varying ages and backgrounds) from all over the country on bass, guitar, live performance, and song writing. This includes one-on-one instruction and group lessons. I received a certification in live performance, studio work, and songwriting through The Contemporary Music Center, now located in Nashville, TN. And I I Finished my Bachelor's degree at Eastern University

I've toured all over the country with acts such as Talain Rayne and played bass on his album "Attic Lights." I also completed an internship in Nashville, TN with hit songwriter, Kate York.
For the past five years, I've played with the band Element K (under Shore Bets booking agency) as the lead
singer and guitarist. I've played shows all over the Northeast including (but not limited to) Xfinity Live, Wells Fargo Center, Hard Rock Cafe, The Tin Angel, Borgata AC, Ballys, Tropicana, and Seacrets in OCMD.

I like lessons to be, first and foremost, an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. I try to create a laid back and comfortable learning environment for all my students. Music is fun, and I guarantee that there will be plenty of good times while taking lessons!
Now, let me also clarify that my positive attitude and laid back demeanor are not excuses for students to be undisciplined and uncommitted. I promise to work hard toward your development as a musician to make you the best you can be, and I appreciate the same commitment from all of my students.
Music should be enjoyable, but also rewarding and enriching to your life! I don’t want to sell that short!

Below is a basic rundown of what a student can expect to learn while under my instruction. I would first like to preface this information by saying that I fully recognize that every student is different; therefore, I tailor lessons to fit an individual’s needs and goals. Because of this, the priority of certain skills tends to vary from one student to another, as does the order in which this skills are taught. I also want to note that I tend to use some self-made resources (charts, explanations, etc) in addition to published books. Taking into consideration the aforementioned variables, here is the basic rundown of the material I try to cover with students, in the general order it is taught:

-Understanding of guitar parts (anatomy of the instrument) and basic terms (ie note, chord, etc).
-Names of strings (E-string, B-string, etc.) and corresponding numbers for strings (1-6), and which fingers are given what numbers.
-Tuning of the instrument
-Basic technique (how to finger a fret board, hold guitar, hold pick, etc).
-How to find notes on the fret board/chromatic
-Basic rhythm concepts and counting (whole notes, quarter notes, time signatures, etc)—usually involves clapping exercise, single note playing exercises, reading rhythm charts, and learning what different note values look like.
-Basic concepts of “keys”
-Basic major and minor scales (especially for “warming up”)
-Chords (mostly basic open chords)
-Strumming
-Learning songs to put concepts together
For more advanced students, we will likely get into the following:
-Power chords, bar chords, and complex chords beyond majors and minors.
-Scales beyond basic majors and minors
-Music theory (chord construction, modes, etc).
-Knowledge of gear (for those guitarist who wish to branch out to electric guitar)—bass players will already have to know some of this before moving to more advanced work since they already require an amp.
-How to play with other musicians and instruments (collaboration, listening, understanding each instrument’s part, etc).

[To give students a basic timeline for these skills, one can expect to be playing open chords within three months and probably their favorite songs within 6 months]

SONGWRITING TEACHING METHODS:
-Review slides about basic song structure and anatomy of songs (verse, hook, etc)
-lyric and vocal phrasing
-finding your voice as a writer
-exploring environments and conditions that foster one’s creativity for writing songs (preference for outdoors, quite secluded spaces, etc).

LIVE PERFORMANCE:
-Breathing/relaxation exercises
-Movement/watching footage of self
-Watching footage of others
-Acting/stage exercises to get out of your head and into your body
-learning common problems with live performances and becoming comfortable with fast, on-the-spot trouble shooting (and how to avoid some problems before they begin).
-Finding your stage voice, both in singing and speaking.
-Developing your stage persona

David is a very skilled drummer and a very enthusiastic teacher. In lessons, he seems to like to split time between practicing rudiments and learning to play different rhythms on the set. He is also exceptionally patient and supportive with my 9-year-old, highly distractible daughter. David is very positive, pointing out things that are going well and interesting rhythms that they discover. I am really glad we found David--he is an excellent teacher and I love watching my daughter learn so much about music!

I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in West Philadelphia. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at the age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected to perform as the “jazz tru
mpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school, I moved to the city of Chicago proper. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Consprirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

I love teaching. I go into every lesson with the belief that the student is there to learn; if they weren't interested in learning, they wouldn't be there. Because I have always had diverse musical interests, I create a stress-free atmosphere for my students by allowing them to pursue whatever avenues of music interest them. My degrees may be in Jazz Studies and Performance, but I have extensive experience with Classical and Popular music; I provide a unique perspective and enthusiasm to every student.

Composer and saxophonist Brandon has emerged in the music scene as a pioneering jazz and classical musician. His unique style of jazz composition and publications in the field of quarter tone music set him apart from the crowd.

Brandon is well-known for his advancements in the field of quarter tone music. His book, Quarter Tone Technique for Saxophone, is the first of its kind. This book explorers the possibilities of this music and its application on saxophone farther than anyone else in the past has. His unique compositions use this extended technique to create new sound atmospheres which were previously unexplored.

Brandon, along with Evan Smith, co-leads Ghost House, a six-member modern jazz group known for its original compositions. His compositions for this group explore his own modern composition ideas, while remaining true
to the rich tradition of jazz music.

Brandon is a member of The Dirty Bohemians. This is a funk/hard rock group led by Zach Birnbaum. This group is well-known in New Jersey as a tight group with high-calibre original compositions.

Brandon is also a member of The Third Arrangement, a fusion/rock group led by Nate MacAdams. This group performs originals and well-known rock/fusion songs.

Brandon performs in a variety of venues, including Chris’s Jazz Cafe, the Washington Banquet and Catering, Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro, Shanghai Jazz, and the Tuckahoe Inn, as well as Rowan University, NJMEA Convention, and the University of Maryland. He is based in South Jersey, where he primarily performs, but he also occasionally travels out-of-state.

Brandon began studying saxophone as a teenager, both as a classical and as a jazz musician. He attended Rowan University for a performance degree in Jazz Studies, where he also studied classical saxophone technique, as well as music composition, where he studied with Timothy Powell, Denis DiBlasio, Carl Cox, and Roberto Pace. During the early years of his career, he performed regularly in his home state of New Jersey.

In 2014, Brandon received the Bill Walters NJJS Jazz Scholarship through the New Jersey Jazz Society, where he was invited to perform at the Shanghai Jazz restaurant with a group from the William Paterson University. He also performed at the 2014 NJMEA Convention with the New Jersey Intercollegiate Jazz Band. In 2016, Brandon was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honors society.

I have known Brandon since 2012. We entered Rowan together to major in music. Brandon has always been the "go-to" saxophonist at the music department. He is widely knowledgeable not only in music but also in several academic aspects. Definitely a fun person to work with, and to talk to. I am completely sure that if you take lessons with Brandon, you will not only grow as a musician but also as a person.
Without having finished at Rowan, Brandon has already written and published a book. This speaks not only of his self-motivation, but also about the seriousness with which he takes his career as a musician. Students who chose to study with him will surely be influenced by all of his positive aspects.
Definitely recommended!

I have worked with Brandon since 2014 in several diifrrent music settings, and have taken a several lessons with him on saxophone (I'm a keyboard player). He is a consumate professional to play with and learn from.

When teaching, he is very good at explaining what you need to change, and how to do it in an easy to understand way. He is also very nice and encouraging, and inspired me to do better in my playing. He is punctual and will work with you to make things work for all involved, and has a fair rate for lessons.

I wholly reccomend Brandon as a teacher.

I am a professional cellist, skilled in all solo, chamber, and orchestra settings. My playing has invited me into the top ranking music festivals in the world including Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and many others. These opportunities have led me to perform with the New York Philharmonic.

Growing up, I studied with a Philadelphia orchestra cellist who prepared me for conservatory auditions. After being accepted into all 7 universities and conservatories I applied to including the Juilliard School, I decided to go to the Cleveland Institute of Music where I got my Bachelors of Music in cello performance. I studied with the former principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and also with one of the best Suzuki pedagogues in the country. I, then, got a Masters in Music in cello performance
from Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. There, I studied with one of the most internationally renowned cello professors in the world who has shaped me into the musician I am today. In addition, I got my Suzuki Certification in all 10 levels of cello books after completing a 2 year year rigorous Suzuki pedagogy program.

In my second year at Northwestern, I won a fellowship, covering my full tuition and acceptance into The Civic Orchestra of Chicago. This is the apprentice orchestra under the Chicago Symphony. We worked with all the conductors that came in to play with the symphony. Yo Yo Ma, the most famous cellist of all time, is the creative consultant for the Civic Orchestra and we got to work with him 4 or 5 times a year.

I have traveled and performed with my string quartet ATLYS representing Lincoln Center in New York City. We have traveled around the world playing crossover music, where we play arrangements of pop, jazz, folk, traditional, rock, indie, alternative, rap, but always return to the forever-beautiful classical quartets, as well.

Because of this, I have learned to play extended techniques on the cello and learned different styles of playing, like Celtic gigs and reels and cool jazzy bass lines. I think this is a fun unique quality that I can add to a student's cello development when studying with me.

I arrange music for string quartet, too. I think it's important for my students to also learn some basic music theory as it can develop a student's understanding of music at a much deeper level. This can make a student appreciate how a piece is created and where a phrase needs tension or where it needs to be released. It's very important for their musicality.

Genevieve taught me the most I’ve ever learned about the cello in a mere two months. Through her I was able to move through an entire Suzuki book while also learning every scale (including chromatic) without using open strings. The techniques she taught me helped further my music that I still use today. Before studying with her I was fourth stand in my high school’s orchestra. By the end of the Summer I was able to achieve first chair and all of the offered solos.

I began the trumpet at the age of 8 while in elementary school in Monroe, CT. I learned to read music at the age of 6 while playing the Tin Whistle. Irish music was offered at the Gaelic American Club my family was apart of. While in CT, I played with several groups: Litmus, an experimental jazz group, The Prognostic Mutation Orchestra, a free jazz large ensemble, and Arlido Desouza, a Brazilian guitar player who played many of the Brazilian standards. I was also apart of the Ska scene in the mid 90’s. My first Ska band was The Snappers who recorded Trick Noisemakers which was released independently.

After meeting Terell Stafford at the Litchfield Jazz Camp as my ensemble coach in 1999, I became aware of Temple University highly acclaimed jazz program. Two years later at 23, I attended Temple University and went on to receive my degree.
While at Temple University under Terell Stafford, I was afforded the opportunity to perform with Jon Faddis with the Big Band at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

Once I reached Philadelphia, I found a large amount of music that varied from hard-bop, singer/songwriters, free jazz, swing bands, Balkan brass bands, gypsy music, Big Bands, and experimental rock groups to play with. I performed with The Wildness (a Louie Prima tribute group), OudBlues, Naja, Bobby Zankel and the Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, and many other local Philly bands. For the last 10 years I have been performing in the West Philadelphia Orchestra, a traditional Balkan style 14-piece brass band with an original twist.

By the end of college I met Melody Gardot and began performing with her, touring world wide. We had the opportunity to record at Abbey Road, appear on various late night performances, and attend a number of jazz festivals around the world.

Next was releasing my debut album "Herevibe" in 2009, with one vocal track described as "a neo-soul meets Chet Baker tune". The music blends the cool and aggressive parts of jazz and, "Soulful relaxed trumpet backed by Philly-based jazz musicians with a few twists from traditional bop".
