Do you have two left arms and two left feet (or two rights of each if you're left-handed), and have no idea how to coordinate behind your drumset?

Do you want to be able to accurately listen to a song and "play it" on your steering wheel as you drive?

Do you constantly have trouble maintaining speed, slowing down or speeding up for no reason?

How about wanting to go all-out and learning those crazy double-bass parts and snare rolls popular in today's extreme metal?

I require a practice pad for lessons to learn rudiments and coordination techniques, even if it's just a mouse pad taped to a heavy book to start with. If you continue taking lessons, I can recommend the best practice pad for you.

I typically will teach and write drums using a combination of tablature and standard sheet music. Tablature a simple set of lines and X marks that are much easier to read, and once learned will instantly give you access to thousands of songs.

You'll learn how to keep time with ...

I've attended a number of masterclasses and group lessons with Andy in the past, and every learning experience has been enriching and engaging! He delves into the topic at hand with an all around approach, discussing history, pedagogical style, musical understanding, and of course, deliberate execution. When I'm working on my own, I often think back to many of the concepts he taught me, especially in regards to technique and mindfulness. As a music student, I'm grateful to be able to learn from him and am looking forward to arranging one-on-one lessons in the future!
Alex
Andy is a thoughtful, encouraging, and insightful instructor who is well versed in his studies of classical, world, orchestral, and chamber music amongst others. In his time filling in at Lawrence University while my primary instructor was on sabbatical, he gave me tips on how to internalize the "feel" of my repertoire, make my playing more efficient, increase my dynamic control on both mallet and battery instruments, and introduced me to the Afro-Colombian style of drumming. Andy's ability to cater to each student's individual needs and lesson curriculum is extremely impressive and inspiring.
Jonathan
As a percussionist studying in college, Andy is anything a student could ever ask for in terms of percussion expertise. Around UW Milwaukee, he gives excellent master classes and is able to lead full class sessions that delve into a LARGE array of topics. This may already be a selling point, but one on one lessons with Andy are outstanding. Mastery of many styles and instruments make it easy for Andy to give lessons on almost anything, including drumset, classical percussion, congas, etc. Great instructor!!

"Michael has been very patient and flexible with my inconsistent schedule as a working adult. He brings a positive energy with a lot of praise and positive reinforcement that makes me look forward to my weekly lesson. If learning how to play drums is on your new years resolution/bucket list, Michael makes that commitment a fun experience! I've tried a few drum teachers but I especially noticed a huge improvement in my drum skills since I started lessons with Michael. I've played songs that I wouldn't have imagined playing a year ago. He is of course very knowledgable with the drums, published his own drum lesson book, but he doesn't just go through rudiments or textbook material. He gives various resources that are useful in drumming and never makes the learning experience dull. Very professional and easy-to-approach guy, I would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn drums, especially if you're an adult wanting to try something new!"

"Returning to drums after several years, I found that the "Drum Control" book Perry created and wrote really cleaned up my technique and got me going again with the essential tools I needed. I can't believe how easy it was with this great book. The combination of his teaching and book got me rockin' in no time! Perry is a real pro and knows what he's doing. I am learning from the best! Thanks Perry!"

"I know a bit about drums myself, but wanted to find a professional instructor to teach my son. I've met a lot of teachers in San Diego who advertise that they teach a lot of different instruments and found that most of them know very little about drums and percussion (usually just basic rhythms that they learned from other instruments, and a few rudiments). Garrett on the other hand is exactly what my wife and I were looking for for our son. He specializes in drum set and percussion, is professional and very mature for his age, and an excellent teacher (I've learned a lot from the lessons as well). He gets along great with my son as well, and inspires him to practice hard throughout the week. We'll be sticking with Garrett for a very long time."

"Working with Garrett has been a wonderful experience. I was nervous to take drum lessons at first, but the environment at Garrett's studio is really comfortable, and he is very easy to talk to. As far as the lessons go, Garrett is great at breaking complicated topics down, and he pays a lot of attention to the fine details. Whenever I have trouble with something, he always has other ways of explaining the concept and fines a way to make it click with me. Garrett is also just as good with jazz as he is with rock and pop. We started with a lot of rock grooves and technique, and now we're working on my reading, jazz comping, and soloing. I learn something new at every lesson and always have a good time doing so--I'd highly recommend Garrett to anyone!"
