Learn to play both classical favorites and obscure gems by improving your technique, sightreading, and music theory skills!

Includes technique, sight-reading, musicality, repertoire selection, music theory, etc., with a focus on classical piano repertoire, according to the student's experience and needs.

About Barbee
Welcome to my teacher profile! My name is Barbee and I am an active professional singer with over ten years of piano and voice teaching experience. I enjoy teaching both children and adults. Check out my specialities and see if you think we'd be a good fit! Then, feel free to click "Ask Barbee a Question" if you'd like more information from me!

Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

I also specialize in helping p
repare singers for auditions for college, performing arts schools, choirs, musicals, and competitions. As an active performer myself I have auditioned many, MANY times for different organizations. I have also been on "the other side of the table" and I know what qualities audition panels are looking for. Several of my current and former students have been accepted to college music programs, performing arts magnet schools, audition-only choirs, and theater programs to continue their studies. Let me help you show your best qualities at your audition!

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!

I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

In-home lesson equipment requirements:
Voice: Piano (preferred) or keyboard; music stand(s); full-length mirror (preferred).

I will break down the nuances of learning the piano in a friendly, clear, and articulate manner. We will discuss various concepts of the acoustic guitar in the styles and songs you enjoy most.

About Adam
A graduate of the University of Rochester with a B.A. in Music and Psychology and trained at renowned National Guitar Workshop, Adam is an experienced teacher and performer on the guitar, piano, ukulele, and bass in a variety of styles, including rock, pop, jazz, classical, and folk. Adam loves to share his passion for music with others, and ever since his first student, an autistic child, Adam has sought to make learning music fun, regardless of age, style, and ability.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching music is strictly an individualized one, catering to the specific interests and goals of each student. I believe that if learning music is truly enjoyable and fun, students will develop a sincere love for their instrument. In teaching children, my emphasis is on instilling in them a love of music. While progressing in mus
ic obviously requires preparation outside of lessons, I consciously avoid asking students to practice. Instead, I incorporate the music and styles that appeal most to the student and use them as vehicles for teaching concepts.

I strive to make learning music fun, regardless of age, style, and ability. I organize an annual recital to showcase my students' talents and hard work.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide all music and instructional materials, and ask that students provide a clean, quiet area to hold our lesson, ideally with a music stand. I also ask that a student provide their own instrument. If providing an instrument is not possible, I ask that the student notify me so I can provide an instrument for them in the interim.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in a wide range of styles on the acoustic and electric guitar, piano, ukulele, and bass.

I explain music theory in a fun, clear, and articulate manner and show its benefits and application in song writing, learning music, and playing by ear. My extensive background in rock, classical, pop, folk, and jazz allows for a truly cater my instruction to my student's tastes.

I make it my mission to structure my lessons on my student's goals and interests and avoid imposing concepts that don't interest my students.

Adam does a great job of adjusting to the student's level of experience. I'm a beginner with some minimal uke experience, and he adjusted the pace of the lesson accordingly. I especially like his emphasis on contemporary music; he seems to have fun with music which, as someone who endured years of strict classical piano training as a kid, I find very refreshing.

My 6 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Catherine for about 7 months now, and we couldn't be happier. After begging me for lessons, of course my child already hates practicing. But Catherine couldn't be more patient, encouraging my daughter so that she enjoys playing by the end of each lesson. Catherine also seems very flexible in her approach to teaching. While she does follow standard curricula for the beginner, she is also extremely open to allowing my daughter play the music she wants to play. Catherine has really tailored my daughter's learning to suit her taste and ability, which engages my daughter and encourages her to want to learn.

He took me through the first steps - as basic as holding the violin - really carefully and not at all condescendingly, even though I'm an adult who never even learned to read music. Experienced teacher, musical director, composer, and accompanist (currently working at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts New Studio on Broadway). I believe that a slow detailed approach to learning anything is vital to its success. Many people will tell you that they can have you playing your favorite song in one lesson but what I offer instead of a "one hit wonder" is a foundation in technique, theory, and musicianship that allows my students to excel and surpass the "one hit wonder." All ages are welcome! I specialize in the beginner and intermediate student. Can't wait to begin this musical journey with you.

About Andrew
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska I have played the piano since the age of 4. My parents used to tell me that I could stop and start whatever activities I wanted to whether that be playing baseball or participating in karate. The only thing I was not allowed to quit was playing the piano. At first I was not very good, I was not some musical prodigy, in fact some might say I was bad. I didn't like to practice, I just wanted to be able to play. Unfortunately that's not how learning an instrument works. It was not until middle school that I began to appreciate that my parents had made me play the piano because after 6 years I started to improve. This of course was because I started to enjoy what I was doing, and I started practicing more and more.

Eventually I made my way to becoming a singer and a composer but that's a whole other stor
y. I graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Musical Theater. While there I was exposed to all different genres and became a respected vocal coach amongst my peers and alumni. I also successfully music directed several shows both at NYU and a children's theater in upstate New York. It is a gift like no other to be able to play any instrument and I am overjoyed to share that gift with all of my students past, present, and future.

I've been playing the piano for a very long time. (Almost 27 years, to be exact!) I feel that the piano is an incredibly powerful instrument. Because the piano is a chordal instrument, you can literally use it to play any piece of music ever written, classical, jazz, pop, or anything else you can think of.
It is also one of the most relaxingly mindful and emotionally cathartic experiences to be able to play the piano!
You can play many different rhythms at the same time (since you have two hands, and ten fingers). Or you can play the most beautiful melody with one hand while the other hand keeps the beat. You can sit down and compose a piece, or you can accompany yourself while you sing. Or if you want to learn about music theory, the piano keys are a better visual representation of this than any other instrument. It's the easiest instrument with which you can learn to play by ear. The possibilities are truly endless.
For these reasons and many more, piano lessons should be ...

About Rebecca
I was trained at the Eastman School of Music in classical piano and voice, but have always had a love for pop music. After I was done with school, I moved back to NYC, joined an indie rock band called Ravens & Chimes, started writing and producing pop songs under the name Krystalmath (over 400,000 plays on Spotify), and began my teaching career. I usually start students in a classical style because it provides more structure, but also emphasize from early on pop and jazz-style improvisation and playing by ear.
