Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.
In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.
About Antoinette
I deliver two types of lessons: private lessons and group classes. If you are interested in group classes, please inquire for more information. Finding a trained violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the yea

I'm a dedicated teacher and spend extra time outside of lessons thinking about how to best approach the following lesson. I find the style of teaching that works best for the student. I write plans after lessons and email or give them in person summarizing the lesson's key points to help make practicing at home easier and more organized in order to make lesson time as effective overall as possible.

Lessons are tailored to fit each individual student's ability and goals. I believe in challenging students while maintaining a supportive and encouraging environment. Lessons will cover music theory, technique, and solo pieces. The goal is to develop in each student the specific skills needed to play a string instrument as well as to nurture an understanding and love for music.

First and foremost, it is so important for me to get to know you and your musical interests (favorite songs, artists or bands). Once I know a little bit more about you and where your musical interests are, I help you build goals based on what you’d like to accomplish...that could be anything from “just wanting to learn something new and to have fun” to “playing my sister’s favorite song at her wedding in 3 months” or “to join an orchestra and make it my professional goal”. My style of teaching over the last 25 years incorporates technique, reading music, ear training, and improvisation. In addition to the violin, I teach viola, cello and piano/keyboard. The genres I love to teach are classical, rock, pop, jazz, film/tv music, and fiddle!

She not only got him playing, but instilled a love of music and of composition. Nancy was also incredibly supportive and encouraging as my son transitioned and has a special place in our hearts
She creates new and different classes - group , and mash up with different musicians and instruments.
She seems to get the best from all her students.

When I had questions or problems that we were not able to figure out between the two of us he went to his instructor to ask. He was not afraid to admit that he didn't know. He respected me as a scientist who had challenging questions.
Overall, I highly recommend Chris as an instructor for viola.

Exceptional Violist, Masterful Teacher
Helen McDermott is an exceptionally talented violist who is also a masterful, empathetic teacher. She brings a truly unique combination of technical virtuosity, pedagogical professionalism, and psychological insight into the music studio. I know this from personal experience because I have greatly benefited from being one of her viola students.
Her vast experience as a professional violist gives her a wealth of technical knowledge, not only about how to play the viola but, more importantly, how to play beautiful music with this instrument. She has studied, and continues to study, different teaching methods, drawing from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. She also connects empathetically with her students, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect that alleviates anxiety, thereby allowing genuine learning to take place.
In short, her breadth and depth of expertise, in both musicianship and pedagogy, make her an ideal viola teacher who guides students on their path to realizing their full potential as a violist and as a complete musician."

Elisa taught my daughter viola for almost two years before she moved West. My daughter start viola when she was six. Elisa was very good with a young novice player - She explained musical concepts at an age appropriate level (but never dumbed things down). We were also pleased that she had high standards in her weekly expectations but always kept things fun and loose so as not to cause stress. Had she not moved we would still be employing her. Elisa is a great teacher."
