About Ashlyn
Hi! I have been teaching private violin lessons for the past 8 years to beginners and adults! I am currently a freelancer in New York City, as well as working for an artist management company.

I began teaching privately after working with the Boston Youth Symphony’s Intensive Community Program. This program provides free instruction to underrepresented communities and work with the program was required of my pedagogy course at Boston University. This was my first experience teaching and I loved it! I continued to work with the program after my class ended, helping students who needed some extra time with their instruments or training in music reading and theory. I have been teaching private lessons ever since, maintaining small studios while at was at school in Chicago and Boston.

To enhance my teaching, I took the Every Child Can,
Book 1 and Book 2 courses offered through the Suzuki Association of America. These classes provided valuable new ideas and approaches to teaching that I use every day. At Belvoir Terrace I was a violin and viola teacher as well as a full time counselor, living with the students and being totally integrated into their camp lives. Additionally, I was the chairperson of the Instrumental Department, learning how to more carefully organize tasks, foster innovation, and build relationships between departments.

I am passionate about all areas of music education. This summer, I accepted an internship in the production department of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. I had the most wonderful summer of my life, enjoying every moment of being backstage, driving artists to and from Ravinia, and working with talented young artists about to step into their careers. That summer helped me develop my skills in education and production, and my passion for changing children’s lives through music education has only grown. I have continued to see how the arts unite communities and how arts education and outreach change lives.

***Education***
I received my Master's Degree in Violin Performance from DePaul Univeristy in 2014 and a Certificate in Performance in 2016. I graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance. If you are looking for a young, exciting teacher, I might be the perfect fit!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages and experience levels. Depending on the student, I use a Suzuki based method of teaching. This means that I use the Suzuki books and like to have the parent be more involved in the learning process, but I also feel it is very important to supplement the books by adding scales, etudes, and other solo repertoire. When possible, I like to have my students interact in chamber music, which is so often missing from most lessons.

I expect students to have a music stand. I bring music and a tuner and metronome.

I have been taking lessons with Ashlyn for about 7 months now and she has truly been the best violin teacher I could have hoped for! She is not only good at teaching and helping me improve my playing, but she is also a really nice person and we get along very well. I look forward to every lesson and always learn a lot and have fun. Unfortunately, I leave for college soon so I will no longer be able to take lessons with Ashlyn, I will miss her a lot.

Ashlyn is my violin teacher,she is amazing!!!She has been my teacher for about 3 months.She is very good at what she does,patient,great communication,reliable and extremely talented..I was reluctant to take a class at my age,I was scared that my teacher would not be patient with me,however I 'm so glad I did.When I met Ashlyn she made it easier for me to continue and not give up my dream of learning how to play the violin!!

I graduated from Mannes College of Music with a BS in violin performance and a minor in psychology. While at Mannes, I was a student of Sally Thomas (Julliard School), and other primary teachers include Yi-Wen Jiang (Shanghai String Quartet), Claudia Schaer, Amy Barlowe and Oscar Ravina. I have performed at every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. My performance schedule has led me to perform in concert with pop superstar Sarah Mclachlan and to solo performances with the Rockland Summer Institute orchestra.

My past chamber music coaches include Ann Setzer, Peter Prosser, Chin Kim, Gena Raps, and members of both the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and NY Philharmonic. I have also participated in masterclasses with Cho-Liang Lin, Pamela Frank, and Ida Kavafian.
I am also a alumna of the Meadowmount School of Music.

Currently, I am a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of America and have completed Suzuki teacher training for books 1 - 8 at NYC's School for Strings, where I trained with Ekaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb. *** Lesson Details ***
I generally try to tailor my teaching approach based on a student's individual goals with a strong emphasis on proper violin technique. I have the most experience teaching using the Suzuki method, but also utilize more traditional approaches in order to address the developmental level of my pupil. I expect my students to come in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.

With students 7 years of age and younger, I strongly recommend that a parent take lessons for 6 weeks prior to their child beginning instruction. I also insist that parents sit in on their child's lessons and take notes. This enables parents to properly supervise their child's practice, which ultimately leads to speedier progress and a better grasp of the material being taught.

Separate dedicated violin studio in apartment with piano.

I do own three cats (Spork, Pancakes, and Brienne), so please let me know if this is a problem!

I ask that my students please speak to me prior to purchasing or renting an instrument.

Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

While I studied with Jascha Heifetz protege Erick Friedman to get my BM and MM from Manhattan School of Music,, Charlie Castleman at The Quartet Program and Chris Lee, concertmaster of NJ Symphony, my teaching is based on what I learned as a performing musician in NYC. Gregor was terrific to work with! He has had so much experience and teaches in a very personal and dynamic manner. He can really address the root of many issues in playing and take personal differences in consideration. I was very happy he had so much experience using the Alexander Method and adapting it to violin playing. This is what you need to set yourself up for a lifetime of playing! While I studied primarily classical music, he also has lots of experience in many other genres as well.

I briefly studied with Gregor when I lived in the NYC Metro area. He is one of the best teachers I've had the privilege of studying with over the years. My lessons were tailored to my goals, and Gregor was committed to helping me learn as much as possible, while being incredibly down to earth. He is simply a world-class teacher, and someone I was very fortunate to meet. It was a pleasure and privilege taking lessons from him, and I cannot recommend him enough to aspiring violinists and violists.

I am a patient teacher, and passionate about teaching music. There are many aspects on learning how to play the violin. I focus on the sound a lot, so it will be a very short or almost to none screeching time when they play. To produce good sound, posture is number one thing. I like to build a student from a solid ground, so correct posture, right hand, left hand position, violin holding, and the whole body posture are all little pieces can make big differences in violin playing. By doing so, can make playing much easier, sounding beautiful, and make hard passages easier! And the correct posture will also help prevent the possibility from getting playing related injuries. I believe having inspiration is important too, listening to different music and great players can develop the ears, and also is a hugh inspiration to practice.

Pedagogy is always been my greatest passion. My students are my first priority and my goal is to instill a deep passion for music, I want them to learn moved from the desire of making music.
As a teacher I work to provide my students all the knowledge that i had acquired from my teachers and my personal experience.
I strive to provide them the best technique that they need, i teach them how to bee creative, how to learn and how to become teachers of them self.
My first concern, is to communicate and reach out every student, to understand their learning process in order to find a specific method for each one of them, as everyone is unique and have a different approach to music.

Emanuele Valle started to play the violin at the age of 5, at 12 he won first price at several youth competitions like Stresa and Serravalle Sesia international competitions. In the same years he was also the youngest member of the chamber orchestra “Archinsieme” which provide him an invaluable performing experience for his young age.
At the age of 14 he attended the Conservatory of Novara and Bologna.
Emanuele earned his Bachelor from the Conservatory of Ferrara with Alessandro Perpich and his Graduate Performance Diploma from the Boston Conservatory with Markus Placci.
Further more, he studied with Anton Berovski, Marco Fornaciari, and Mela Tenenbaum.
He has a long teaching experience.
His main educational principle is to provide his students an invaluable foundation of technique and musical aesthetic that can serve them throughout th
eir musical journey. Emanuele strives to instill in each student a deep passion for music in a way that they can learn through the desire of making music
Through a personalized approach during their training, he helps his students to create a professional identity in an increasingly competitive world, with an emphasis on technique, relaxation, efficient practice skills.
He combines and carries the fundamentals of the Russian and Franco-Belgian traditions he inherited from his teachers, that he displays with all his passion to all his students.
