Learning to play the piano was a lifelong dream of mine. I’ve been taking lessons from Janet now for five years. As an “adult” student starting from scratch, I was concerned that I would never really be able to understand music or become truly competent. When I look back to where I started from and how far I’ve come, I’m amazed. Janet is truly a genius at teaching. She makes difficult concepts easy to understand. And she truly understands the challenges of the adult learner. But learning is always enjoyable, never stressful. I look forward to my lessons and even my at-home practicing sessions. It’s become a kind of therapy for me! I would recommend Janet and the Fine Arts Music School to any who is serious about learning to play the piano.

I am an adult who learned piano for 2 years when I was little before quitting. I wanted to regain my skills and Janet has been helping me do that. She’s fantastic, kind, flexible and encouraging! She reminded me to enjoy the music while at the same time challenging me to improve my skills to the next level I couldn’t be more excited !!

About Jerry
I've been playing and loving music for well more than half a century, now. I got started in second grade when my grandpa brought home a little violin one day, and I've been at it ever since. I was fortunate to take lessons for more than ten years with Carita Page, a teacher who was very warm, encouraging, and caring. I do my best to pass that on to my students in addition to the technique of playing and the theory of music, fascinating as those are.

I feel that playing in groups is very valuable experience for students and gives you a side of music that private lessons alone cannot. I encourage students to look for opportunities to do that. To help provide those opportunities I organized the Cranbury Scout Band, one of very few continuously-operating Scout bands in the country, which I have directed for more that ten years now.
I've also been on the staff of several Jamboree Scout bands.

*** Lesson Details ***
Every student is a different individual and learns in different ways. I try to make lessons as interesting and as useful to each student as I can, and include different things based on your interests and capabilities. Most students find duets are fun, so I include them often - both duets with the same instrument you are studying and duets with other instruments as well so you can learn the sound of such combinations. I encourage you to "play with your ears" as well as your fingers, to become a critical listener to your own performance and to decide whether you sound the way you want to sound.

I encourage students to try different things to become a more rounded musician. This might be something closely related - a flutist trying the piccolo or a clarinetist trying the bass clarinet. Or, it might be further afield - a flutist trying the guitar or a violinist learning movable Do and solfeggio singing. Every aspect of music is good to know.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My music studio is in a separate building - actually a renovated barn about two centuries old. The studio contains a piano and all the other instruments that I teach, and is roomy enough not only for private lessons but for musical groups up to about ten. I have many other resources there as well, including files of music, a small music library, and a computer that we can use for many purposes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need their instruments, music, and stands.
I bring my own instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Classical,
Marching Band,
Ethnic (such as Jewish, Irish)

Perhaps the best teacher I’ve ever had—in any discipline, at any age. When I first began two years ago, I couldn’t read a note of music and had never played any instrument. Since then, thanks to Moran’s patience and guidance, I can play with confidence at a level I never imagined. Wonderful, kind, yet demanding teacher who enjoys teaching and takes great pride in the progress of her students

Ivan is an exceptional teacher. His instruction goes far beyond the technical foundation required for all musicians - he integrates teachings that help one tap into the emotional connection to music and how that impacts playing. His disciplined approach helped me break out of some habits that developed as a self-taught guitarist and his patience was an asset for someone like me, who is very impatient.

From Ivan you will establish a foundation that is build on theory and technique. With Ivan there are no shortcuts - practice, be diligent and you'll achieve consistency. He works you hard but it's worth the effort because with these pillars, even I, an uneducated musician, have seen growth in my skills.

Geography is no issue so no matter where in the world you live, I highly recommend Ivan as a teacher and mentor.

About Nicholas
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and was introduced to jazz music by my father from a very young age. While a student at U.C. Berkeley, I played saxophone in the university wind and jazz ensembles, and, during my third year of college, I studied in Lyon, France, where I would sing in jazz clubs and play sax on the Rhone river. I've composed music for many different genres from jazz to rock to pop to classical and more. I even wrote and produced my own musical that had a month-long run in San Francisco in 2013. I'm also the lead singer/song-writer and guitarist of an indie pop band based in Brooklyn, NY. We're called Little Person and have recorded and released two EPs that have received considerable press and glowing reviews. I also release live music videos every Friday with my twin brother, Max. We usually cover oldies tunes or
jazz standards. Check em out online!

Throughout all these endeavors, I've continued to play saxophone, guitar, and piano, sing, write, record, and teach music. I offer lessons that are molded to the student's interests and skill level. Depending on the kind of music the student enjoys will determine how I lead the lesson. I also enjoy introducing my students to different genres of music and artists that they may have not heard in the past. Overall, I'm pretty down-to-earth. Depending on your experience, with my lessons, you'll learn to read music, train your ear, sight read, and properly play the instrument and we'll eventually delve into a deeper understanding of music theory. I try not to be too earnest and strict because I think it's important for the student to have fun. I take a youthful approach to teaching: I attempt to find common ground with the student and relate to them on some level that might not even have to do with music (although relating on a musical level is obviously preferred). Under my guidance, students often actively pursue their desire to further their musical studies. And, more importantly, they have fun doing so. Playing and writing music is fun, and it should be taught and learned that way.
