What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. I'm a producer, instructor, singer songwriter, sound engineer, and composer residing in Brooklyn, New York. I'm currently working on a Master's Degree in Music Production and Sound Design at The Academy of Art University, freelancing as a pianist/vocalist, and I'm working on and recording a second album.

I started singing, playing piano, and composing music when I was seven years old. Throughout my musical career, I have performed and collaborated with various rock bands, classical trios, vocal ensembles, churches, and theater groups.

In 3 or 6 months you will have a basic understanding of music theory and a solid foundation of piano, voice, or guitar techniques. Our first piano lesson with Tamara was really pleasant. She was very welcoming and attentive the whole time. I can tell my son was really enjoying the lesson. The details with the progress sheet and flash cards she provided was a plus for me. Her studio space also made the experience really great!

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.

This way a student has a multi-faceted approach to music they are learning, and once they have learned it, they are continually adding to their repertoire. I work this way because many students are overwhelmed at the beginning of the learning stage. Examining the theory behind the composition helps them understand it, and approach it with less apprehension. Also, having pieces they can play from memory every week reminds them of the finished product of their labor and encourages them towards the new work.

Jennifer is great with my high-energy seven-year-old. She's very patient and she is able to make him engage. She also takes the skills he's learned in his music class in school, and builds his skills lessons around his abilities. Finally, she gives homework in a notebook that is clear and measurable, so he knows exactly what to do on his own throughout the week.

Hi, I'm Wankun, a college student at CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I've many diverse interests, from music to science. I believe that everybody can do both with a balance, and so far, I'm loving it.

Music was always part of my life. I started to play piano when I was 6 and I've advanced it when I was in high school. Still, there are always room for improvement so I'm still practicing to this day. After I moved to the US I start learning other instruments too. In high school I played oboe in wind ensemble and flute in marching band. I always loved hanging out with our school band, just enjoying music in a friendly, cooperative environment. I love music so much, that I listen to songs every day, and I'm planning to do a music minor.

Math and science is another part of my life that I enjoy. As a kid, I was always intereste
d in science documentaries. In school I was the top students in math and science. I learn really quickly so I got ahead of the subjects. I passed the AP text for Chemistry in my sophomore year and the Calculus AB text in my junior year. Currently, I'm studying for Forensic Science at my College.

I don't have a lot of teaching experience, but I believe my ability to share my knowledge with others. I love helping people and I understand that learning can sometimes be overwhelming and boring. So I always love to teach with some twists, we can both enjoy the session and also complete our goal: to advance your knowledge.

I am new to taking lessons with Wankun. I took lessons about a decade ago but had to curtail them. So, I was nervous about starting up again. She calmed my fears with her very professional and fun way of teaching. She is prompt, patient, and effective. I highly recommend her.

Aleksander helped my son prepare for Regents Exams in Math (Algebra, Geometry and Trig.), English and SAT. The results were spectacular. He graduated high school with 98% average in Math and English. He scored above 1500 on the SAT and was accepted into a school of his choice with a scholarship. Alex helped me with my College English/Writing and Accounting courses. His lessons were vigorous, but fun and very engaging. Thanks to him my grade went from C to A.

Saad is a composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and electroacoustic music who achieves a “remarkable fusion of idioms” (New York Times), most notably in his work exploring the disparate qualities inherent in Western art music and Middle Eastern musical tradition. His music delves into that relationship by transferring the performance techniques of traditional Arab instruments to Western symphonic instruments, while extending their capabilities through the advancement of technology.

I started with Saad at a music camp upstate I was attending and of which he was composition faculty. Having taken plenty of music theory in the past but no formal composition, I didn’t know what to expect. First off, Saad’s manner couldn’t have been more calming or inviting from the very beginning, and that really built a great rapport between us and allowed me to do my best work. Secondly, based on my accounts of my past training, it took little time for Saad to identify what were my strengths and what we needed to study in order to ensure my best compositional outputs. We studied invertible counterpoint, a complex subject fundamental to nearly all forms of advanced classical counterpoint. Saad made the subject really approachable through intricate but understandable explanations of different concepts and provided really illustrative examples of each concept. Even a year after those several weeks of study, in which I have hardly written nearly the number of contrapuntal exercises as I did in the weeks during and after Saad’s tutelage, I still find canon and fugue writing to be doable and even fun, testament to how I was able to hold on to Saad’s teachings even long after working with him. I couldn’t recommend Saad’s abilities and qualities higher to anyone wishing to take composition lessons, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that he is an accomplished, experienced, fascinating, and highly-sought-after composer in his own right. Even after working with dozens of different teachers in different musical disciplines, I have found my studies with Saad to be among the absolute most rewarding.

Saad was able to guide me into directions in my compositions I wouldn’t have thought would be possible otherwise. I recommend him highly as he pushed me to work as hard as I could on my pieces, while at the same time highlighting pertinent contemporary repertoire in our lessons.

As a current student enrolled at the Touro College of Education, I have taken a strong interest in pursuing a full-time teaching career.

For as long as I can recall, my curiosity to learn more propelled me to do my own research, so that I became informed enough to discuss such topics with my teachers throughout middle school, high school, and eventually college. Being able to speak candidly and intellectually with my teacher(s) brought me a feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction, and, of course, the desire to keep doing more. Keep doing more research. Keep bringing these lessons to light. Keep expressing my views. 

At an old enough age, I became responsible enough to supervise young children giving up my Sunday mornings to being a Hebrew school teacher’s assistant, or madrich, for five years taught me what it is like to work with child
ren in a classroom setting. 

In addition, I would spend my four summers at sleepaway camp as a bunk counselor supervising 10-15 campers at a time, to coaching lacrosse for boys and girls ages 7-17. Furthermore, these concepts of responsibility, leadership, and lesson planning have helped shape me into becoming the educator that I aspire to be.

As a young professional, pursuing my passion for education has become paramount. Since graduating from high school, I have taken advantage of every opportunity to hone such skills. My drive and determination to pursue my passion for education are steadfast. To have the ability to shape young minds through meaningful yet exciting lessons in my very own classroom space is a responsibility and a privilege I will never take lightly.
