Students who show an interest in music but only prefer to play piano for part of the lesson study music theory. We use a Workbook for theory homework in lieu of practicing piano from a Lesson Book at home. Students enjoy playing music theory instructional games during the lesson and at home.
With a Master of Arts in Music Theory, I enjoy teaching theory students of all levels.

I'm a patient, friendly, enthusiastic, highly experienced teacher. A classically-trained pianist, I started playing keyboard "by ear" from around age 2, and started piano lessons at age 6. In college, I studied piano, music theory/history, and psychology in addition to fieldwork in music therapy (which prepared me to teach students with special needs). In grad school, I specialized in classical piano and theory/ composition.
Lessons with me are personalized. However. proper technique is taught to all students. Overall, I want the love of music to be the reason my students want to practice and attend lessons. Trina approached my daughter very gracefully. My daughter has zero experience and she is very young. She still struggle with counting and some of fine motory skills, e.g. right fingers on the right keys. Trina customized the experience and kept her on the task, even my daughter was a bit stressed-out by the new experience. There is a lot of work ahead of us and with Trina's experience and patience, we hope to make slow, but solid progress.

I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

My system of guitar training includes:

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

Besides being an opera singer, I have been teaching piano and voice for 11 years. I would like to share my skills and experience with you. I just signed up with Asuka a few weeks ago while she was traveling internationally for her performance. Because she was away, we did online lessons. At first I was skeptical because of the time difference and the quality etc. but she has very much experience not only teaching, but with online lessons. My son has an international singing competition coming up and Asuka is not only preparing him for the competition, but also for what expect from judges and how to mentally perceive the performance. Although she travels and maintains her successful career, she is able to put everyone ounce of her expertise into helping my son from where ever she is. When she came back to NYC she also worked personally with him as well. She is the best teacher and vocal coach we have had to date.

Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. One day, I decided to learn ukulele by myself but I became quickly stuck. I found Carolyn on this website and then went to her place to take my first lesson. Carolyn is super sweet; very welcoming, smiling, fun to work with. She is very positive and gives great feedbacks all the time! I learnt a lot during our session!! At some point, we sat at her piano to talk about notes and keys: it was very interesting to switch to another instrument. In addition, her place has very harmonious vibes: when I left I felt so much better!!! I definitely recommend Carolyn for music lessons! And I look forward to our next ukulele lesson!

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great jazz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I became a freelance musician and played guitar for
The Drifters, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Crystals, Chuck Berry, Leslie Gore and believe it or not Tiny Tim. I played guitar, harmonica, mandolin and banjo in productions of: Hair, Tommy, Big River, Fiddler On The Roof and Grease. I composed my own music and performed and co-wrote with others who also wrote their own music. I have always taught private guitar lessons as far back as I can remember. One notable student was Stevie Wonder's son Keita who I taught for 2 years at Stevie's home in northern New Jersey as well as CBS News Anchor Charles Osgood's daughter Annie. Currently I teach 20 private guitar students a week.. From 1994 to 2000, I was the guitarist for The Royal Scam (a Steely Dan Tribute) and during that period I was hired by Hal Leonard Music Corp. to write a guitar transcription book called "The Best of Steely Dan". I was also hired by Brother International Corp. to compose and record a national radio jingle called "P-Touch", with Corey Glover from the rock band Living Colour doing the vocal tracks.
In 1996 I went to William Paterson University to obtain my teacher certification in music education. After the 9/11 attacks, I co-wrote and arranged "America Home Of The Free". The song was used to raise thousands of dollars for the victims of The World Trade Center attacks. Presently I divide my time between teaching, which I enjoy as much as performing and playing guitar with a jazz quartet called ....and All That Jazz, whose 2005 CD "Reflections" was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home based 24 track recording studio in northern NJ. I am also involved in a mandolin / classical guitar project called Music Of The Ages and perform with a 10 piece band called Epic Soul.
As a teacher I am very patient with students and enjoy helping them reach their own musical goals. I emphasize knowing the basics and encourage students to study music theory and basic reading of standard notation. I always ask my students to bring in songs they want to learn as a way to motivate them to practice more.

*** Lesson Details ***
GUITAR: I expect my students to practice at least 5 days a week for at least a 1/2 hour per day. I use the Suzuki method for young students ages 8 to10. We continue learning basic folk songs by ear and then start reading standard notation and basic theory within 6 to 8 months along with classical guitar duets. For older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method. After 3 months of lessons students can expect to know the basic open position chords and strum patterns to some basic songs as well as some famous guitar riffs and also be able to read some basic melodies in standard notation. After 6 months students will be able to play a 12 bar blues and improvise with the pentatonic and blues scales as well as learn moveable scales and chords and apply these to songs.

PIANO: I also start young piano students with the Suzuki method so they can play some five finger familiar melodies in a short time period. Then we progress to reading notation and eventually adding chord accompaniment to melodies. I use the Faber piano method for reading standard notation.

24 track recording studio, room for parents to sit 14' x 21'...completely furnished studio with guitars, amps, piano, drum machine, synthesizer, microphones...the works.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a good quality and proper size guitar (for very young students) a music stand (for their home use) a foot stool, a metronome and books I assign along with an 8 1/2" X 11" blank manuscript book and a folder with side pockets to hold handout sheets. Piano students need their own instrument and the above materials minus the foot stool.

For the past twenty years, Dimitry has been teaching students of all ages to play the clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, and recorder.

Students will learn proper techniques, posture, breathing, phrasing, articulation, tone, rhythm, sight reading, solfeggio, music theory, and music history. They will also learn to play solos (with and without accompaniment), as well as duets (along with the instructor).

Private lessons are customized to meet each student's goals, such as preparation for regional and state band auditions, concerts, and other music competitions.

Our 12-year old son has been learning clarinet from Mr. Dimitry for about a year now and we highly recommend him to prospective students for his deep music knowledge, rich clarinet performance experience and above all, just being a great clarinet teacher.

In a year's time with Mr. Dimitry, our son's progress has been very impressive. After our son started lessons with Mr. Dimitry, it quickly became apparent that Mr. Dimitry is a very experienced teacher for young musicians. He engages our son effectively to keep him interested in music and clarinet while at the same time sets high expectations for him. Our son always looks forward to clarinet lessons and also is motivated to practice pieces at home.

Mr. Dimitry not only teaches sound clarinet skills, but also emphasizes the importance of playing music the right way, that is to tell stories and express feelings through music rather than to play music like a technician. Although it is difficult for a young musician to fully appreciate this concept, it does go a long way in preparing him to become a really good musician in the long run.

My 7 year old son has been taking recorder lessons from Dimitry for almost 1 year now. Dimitry is very patient, encouraging, and enganging - considering that my son is on the younger side. Dimitry provides music instruction that is appropriate age and level wise, so my son feels accomplished and challenged at the same time.
We plan to continue with Dimitry and hopefully advance to the clarinet once his fingers can cover the clarinet holes and he has learned more music theory. My son looks forward to his music lessons. We are very pleased with his musical instruction.

Incredibly amiable, professional, and talented as a teacher.

As a senior in high school now graduating and transferring into college, I started my lessons with Dimitry in December last year and had to end this summer at the end of the music school's program. Even though my time learning the saxophone was short, Dimitry used my past musical experience to help guide me through the instrument. His lessons did not feel long in any sense of the word, and in fact some two-hour lessons I took to make up missed weeks blew by, as I was constantly engaged by his teachings. During my studies with him I found myself in the presence of a true musician, and this was only further driven home when I saw him play in the Hanover Wind Symphony at the Morristown Community Theater with Stanley Drucker. I would highly recommend Dimitry as an instructor for a student at any level.

Justin has been an in demand musician for well over a decade. He received his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from New Jersey City University. During his time in school, he studied with Bud Burridge (Currently playing on Broadway in the production of "If/Then with Idina Menzel), Saturday Night Live's Earl Gardner, Vincent Penzarella (Former NY Philharmonic Member),Joe Magnarelli, Richard Vitale, Grammy Nominee Pete McGuinness and Jazz Historian Bill Kirchner. Prior to studying music in college, Justin attended the Manhattan School of Music Prep Division, where he studied classical/jazz trumpet, theory, improvisation and ensemble performance. He had the opportunity to work with people such as Jeremy Manasia, Nathan Warner and Jacob Manricks. He has received numerous scholarships and played in the All-State Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble
several times. Justin was also a part of the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band, playing lead and the solo chair. He has performed nationwide and has had the opportunity to perform in clubs such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blue Note, Birdland, Smoke, FatCat, Cleopatras Needle, Starland Ballroom, Highline Ballroom and Symphony Space. Justin has also toured with the International Vans Warped Tour all over the country and in parts of Canada. Justin showed my 10 year old son how to play the trumpet and did a great job. He was patient, made my son feel comfortable and was able to help him get a better sound by the end of the very first lesson. Jalen does not give high praise easily so we were impressed that he enjoyed learning from him. My mother listened in on some of the lessons and she also said Justin did a great job - friendly personality and great tips on how to play. We highly recommend him.

Hi, I am a native New Yorker and a guitar player since age 13. I played in blues/rock bands throughout my teens, getting to play the legendary clubs of my Greenwich Village neighborhood. My discovery of Spanish classical guitar music occurred in college at UC Berkeley, and I graduated with a BA in Music, then spent two years playing in Europe, before returning home and forming the band Not Heaven; we played the club circuit, Danceteria to CBGB.

I also began teaching at the American Institute of Guitar in NYC, and writing guitar instruction books (still in print!). Along the way I did a Master’s in Guitar Performance at Stony Brook, and have continued to publish, perform and teach the music which inspires me.

Classical and Flamenco music are my primary involvement, as a teacher, performer and composer.
