I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. My music students include children, working professionals, performing artists, and seniors. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and with private instructors focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e.Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk). Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) and practices from Linklater, Alexander, Williamson movement, and Art of Practicing techniques are incorporated into my music instruction.

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. About Adam
Hello! My name is Adam, and I'm excited to be a part of the Take Lessons team. I am an Actor, Singer, Voice-Over Artist, and Teacher in New York City. Originally from the St. Louis area, I moved to NYC in 2004 to pursue a career in theatre. Along the way, I discovered a love for teaching. I have taught private lessons and classes in a variety of areas, including Acting, Voice, Singing, Musical theatre, Dialects, Shakespeare, and more. As a working professional actor, I am very familiar with the demands of the industry and the dedication it takes to have a career in the performing arts. One of my goals as a teacher is to instill a sense of dedication in my students. And of course, as I understand the personal nature of acting & performance, my main goal is to help each student find and strengthen his/her unique & personal talents.


I have been taught & inspired by many gifted teachers/performers over the years, and I always hope that I can pass along what I have learned to other students. I received my MFA in Acting from the Actors Studio/New School (NYC), and I received my BA in Theatre & Vocal Performance from McKendree University. I also have training from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC and the Old Vic Theatre in London.

Because I have been taught a variety of techniques and styles, my teaching style combines all of those techniques. There are many ways to approach the art of performing, whether it be acting, singing, etc. And it is most effective for me as a teacher to provide you with as many techniques as I can.

*** Lesson Details ***
First and foremost, I believe in working with you to create a relaxed environment where you can learn and grow as a student and performer. Performing (acting, singing, etc.) is about taking risks and looking inside yourself to create something bigger than yourself. Because of that, I always begin each lesson with some sort of relaxation or technique to get you focused.

I ask a lot of questions during lessons---some of the questions may not have one definitive answer. But I ask you these questions to get you to consider various things, think, ponder, explore, and hopefully, DISCOVER.

Because all students learn in different ways, and we all have our strengths as learners and performers, my lessons are different for each individual student.

But you can always count on:
-Learning a variety of techniques to help you with your craft.
-Beginning with relaxation and other exercises to get you released, focused, etc.
-Each lesson being a building block: We build upon what we learned in the previous lesson.
-Combining technical exercises (which I promise are always FUN!) with practical performance pieces (songs, monologues, etc.)

Our goal together will be to unlock YOUR OWN, PERSONAL TALENTS. And then, we will work to fine-tune those talents.

It is my hope that you will continue your desire to perform and share your talents with others. Also, I hope that you will develop a desire for life-long learning and that you'll eventually want to pass along your knowledge and training to others.

I am a firm believer in Method Acting Techniques, including sense memory---the result of these techniques is to bring more of the performer's persona into the performance itself. Therefore, I use exercises to enhance these techniques. I believe that the final performance should be creative and expressive, yet realistic.

In music theory lessons, we will focus on theory that is relevant to the your musical interests while building a solid foundation in understanding universal music theory concepts.

We will relate these concepts to a variety of genres, whether that may be jazz, classical, pop, rock, or folk through analysis and musical examples.

We will also cover arrangement and composition techniques, harmonic and melodic analysis, ear training, and practical application.

I am passionate about sharing musical knowledge with others and believe that the most important aspect of teaching music is creating an environment that is encouraging, fun, and individualized for each student. I have over 8 years of experience teaching piano, theory, and guitar to students of all ages and musical backgrounds.

Above all, our lessons will be about learning what you want to learn, no matter the genre. Curriculum for our lessons will draw from variety of methods. These include theory, ear training, sight-reading exercises, body mapping, technique, improvisation skills, composition, and songbooks.

Summer was a well organized instructor, highly skilled at adapting a lesson to the level of the student, which in my case was very low. She was thorough in her instructions, and provided detailed explanations as well as suggestions to increase the ability to grasp and retain the material. The material she crafted to leave behind for practice seems appropriate to build skills and confidence. Overall, an excellent instructor.

About Kira
I graduated from Mannes College of Music with a BS in violin performance and a minor in psychology. While at Mannes, I was a student of Sally Thomas (Julliard School), and other primary teachers include Yi-Wen Jiang (Shanghai String Quartet), Claudia Schaer, Amy Barlowe and Oscar Ravina. I have performed at every major concert hall in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. My performance schedule has led me to perform in concert with pop superstar Sarah Mclachlan and to solo performances with the Rockland Summer Institute orchestra.

My past chamber music coaches include Ann Setzer, Peter Prosser, Chin Kim, Gena Raps, and members of both the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and NY Philharmonic. I have also participated in masterclasses with Cho-Liang Lin, Pamela Frank, and Ida Kavafian.
I am also a alumna of the Meadowmount School of Music.

Currently, I am a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of America and have completed Suzuki teacher training for books 1 - 8 at NYC's School for Strings, where I trained with Ekaterina Gerson and Allen Lieb. I have also completed additional violin and viola pedagogy studies with Ann Setzer of the Julliard School. My students have been accepted to performing arts high schools such as Laguardia Highschool School for the Performing Arts and now perform with ensembles such as Chicago University's Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, I completed both Music Mind Games Units 1 & 2 teacher training with Michiko Yurko in 2012. I incorporate this fun way of learning how to read and understand music theory into all of my lessons.

I have been teaching privately for over 10 years, and look forward to continuing to enrich other peoples' lives through music for years to come.

*** Lesson Details ***
I generally try to tailor my teaching approach based on a student's individual goals with a strong emphasis on proper violin technique. I have the most experience teaching using the Suzuki method, but also utilize more traditional approaches in order to address the developmental level of my pupil. I expect my students to come in with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.

With students 7 years of age and younger, I strongly recommend that a parent take lessons for 6 weeks prior to their child beginning instruction. I also insist that parents sit in on their child's lessons and take notes. This enables parents to properly supervise their child's practice, which ultimately leads to speedier progress and a better grasp of the material being taught.

Separate dedicated violin studio in apartment with piano.

I do own three cats (Spork, Pancakes, and Brienne), so please let me know if this is a problem!

I ask that my students please speak to me prior to purchasing or renting an instrument.

Following the first violin lesson, I expect my student to provide their instrument (I can provide a list of resources and rental companies for instruments), a notebook, any music books assigned, a music stand, and a metronome.

I specialize in classical playing and prefer teaching using the Suzuki method. I am currently registered with the Suzuki Association of America. I am also flexible enough to assist a student seeking to branch out, and for those not interested in Suzuki, I am also able to teach via more traditional methods. I began studying piano and music theory when I was 5. My father was an accomplished musician (classical and folklore) who played great role in my accomplishment as a pianist and teacher

Before taking lessons with Adam, I had no knowledge about playing guitar and fundamentals of music theory.

So,at the beginning, Adam patiently taught me music theory and the technique to play guitar. During the lessons, I have asked him basic questions about music theory time and again, and he patiently explained the concepts to me. Also, sometimes, I asked him to explain me the song composition (chord structure , melody , bass and etc) of some random songs, and he quickly broke it down in the class and showed me how the song is constructed.

One thing I like about the class structure is that Adam gives you the freedom to choose the lesson content. And, then he slowly nudges you on the right path. In terms of scheduling a lesson, Adam is very accommodating, and he accommodated my every request to change the schedule.

Another thing I would like to mention is Adam's depth of knowledge in terms of music history. Adam always explained me the music concepts by telling me how they got introduced into the music culture.

I will recommend Adam to anyone who wants to learn music.

I am picking up the guitar again after a long hiatus and Adam has been incredibly helpful. He's extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and his lessons have challenged me to learn the fundamentals I had been ignoring. REALLY...

He has been unreliable from the start. He was out of town then when he got back, I had to keep emailing to get an appointment even set up. So far only one lesson in over a month.
My reason was to learn to sing one song and music performance... NOT music theory. I knew going in I had bad pitch but since I am not looking to be a professional singer just learn to perform one song the best to my ability... more jazzy.

Well, He is stuck in his ways and will only be my teach if I am willing to stick to the basic until he thinks I am ready. He also though me wanting to learn how to perform the song that I picked because... I like the style and think it will help me with acting, as if I wanted him to be an acting coach. Really...

Now I have already paid for lessons with him so I hope things can turn around. Teaching is a gift that is more then just technical knowledge.

I guess if your interest is musical theater you might do better with him....

I am a musician of 16 years. I went to Salem State University for music, where I studied guitar, piano, violin and sitar. I am primarily a jazz guitarist, but I love all kinds of music. I am happy to teach all styles. I teach guitar, bass, ukulele and piano. I can also teach you things like ear training, music theory, how to read etc.

I have been teaching privately for 6 years. I have had students as young as 6 and as old as 75. Whether you are looking to learn some of your favorite songs, or trying to gain a deeper understanding of music, I can help.

At age 71, my fist lesson with Steve was August 6, 2015. His instructional style, skillful listening, knowledge and passion for music inspired me to practice and practice and write and write. To those ends, Steve encouraged me to attend an Open Mic Night or two after 7 guitar lessons. Though I was shaking like a box of pills at my first OMN, I eventually overcame my fear and played and sang several blues tunes I'd written. My journey continues. Sometimes I feel like I'm six years old, yet I'm learning how to play better under Steve's guidance. His influence on me has been, and continues to be, profound. Steve's integrity is unimpeachable. My name is Billy Duffy and I am a trombonist/guitarist currently living in New York City. I am studying Jazz Trombone at the New School For Jazz and Contemporary Music in Greenwhich Village. I have a lot performing and teaching experience, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall), Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, Smoke Jazz Club, and many other venues around the city. I have had several students for both trombone and guitar, and teach music theory, composition, and ear training as well. I have experience in a variety of different styles of music. I really enjoy sharing my love for music with my students and main priority is making sure that my students' learning experiences are as effective and enjoyable as possible.
