I specialize with beginner, intermediate and adult learners. I currently hold a degree in music education from LaGuardia Community College, pursuing my master's and bachelor's at Montclair State University this fall for music education and performance for the viola. I'm not afraid of travelling (in fact, I enjoy it!) and am easily reachable and approachable. I understand the world of music, let alone classical music, can be intimidating and challenging; in response to this, I develop an individual basis teaching method as everyone's needs are different and make the experience as fun and engaging as possible.

About Ashley

I am currently a junior at Ramapo College studying music education but I am no foreigner to teaching. I have been teaching for some years now with general ages ranging between 3 to 25, in the violin, viola and cello. I have also taught music theory from a beginner's standpoint to a college sophom

My lesson with Ashley was wonderful. She is very patient and great at explaining things to an adult beginner like me, and clearly very passionate about violin music and teaching. She was very easy to get in touch with after I set up the lessons. Thanks!

Ashley was very helpful to me. I was floundering. I am a brand new 'musician', still learning to read music. I would still be working with her, but I had to move suddenly. She was very encouraging and I hope to be able to continue lessons again with someone in my new location.

In our first lesson, you will learn about the parts of your instrument, how to care for it, and how to hold it. You will even learn some notes and begin reading music! By the end of your first package of lessons, you will be able to play with lovely tone, using the bow as well as plucking, and will have a handful of simple songs under your belt.

Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. My two daughters, 13 and 16, have been taking lessons from Rachel for about a year now. They were beginning and intermediate levels. Both of them have enjoyed working with Rachel. She has kept lessons fun and engaging and we have seen a lot of progress. My daughters love celtic fiddle songs and Rachel has helped them play more on pitch and taught them some neat techniques. Rachel has also been very patient with our scheduling changes and is a great communicator.

Rachel is a terrific and inspiring fiddle teacher. Lessons were focused on achieving my goals (which I did) but lots of fun too. Rachel is great at suggesting a number of approaches to improving your skills and also suggested some great new fiddle tunes! I highly recommend Rachel for fiddle lessons.

"Helen McDermott is an absolute gift of a viola teacher and wonderful mentor. I highly recommend her!

My daughter studied viola with Helen for 8 consecutive years in Helen's private Suzuki viola studio. My daughter started with Helen when she was 6 years old and continued through her 8th grade year, which was winter/spring 2020.

Helen provides high quality and outstanding music instruction including, but not limited to: foundational to advanced music theory, technique (bow hold, etc...), and music history. She also supplements her private lessons with small-group lessons as well as regular opportunities for recitals.

Helen makes learning rich and fun! She's fabulous with creating music games for students during the lessons and to keep at-home practice time stimulating and meaningful. Helen is outstanding with giving her students structure as well as ways to learn how to stay organized.

As a Suzuki parent, I sat in on Helen's lessons for my daughter (per Suzuki philosophy) all through my daughter's elementary school years. I learned so much, myself, and was enriched by seeing my daughter blossom and grow musically. Helen has given the gift of music to my daughter not only with private lessons, but also through recommending excellent opportunities to participate in Suzuki enrichment like summer music camps and chamber music groups. Helen supported and coached my daughter to be prepared for several auditions over the years.

Because of Helen's outstanding viola instruction and mentorship, my daughter has earned and received numerous invaluable musical opportunities as well as truly meaningful compliments from other music teachers in the community.

Our family is incredibly fortunate to have Helen McDermott in our lives! She's a consummate professional musician and she is utterly passionate about sharing her talents and gifts of music."

"Kendra had my 13 year old for about a year and a half as a complete beginner, and we'd still be with her for sure were it not for an easier alternative at a new school this Fall. Kendra has an amazing understanding of the younger student and what incentivizes them to learn and grow fast. My child practiced once a day for at least 30 minutes and in the above time is already making a lot of beautiful music. If you/yours is motivated, Special K is the way! Thnx, Kendra"

"My son has taken viola from Miss Calvino for several years now. She has made it fun for him. He has learned a lot and has even begun playing in church some now. He plays multiple instruments and the viola has been most difficult. Having Miss Calvino as a teacher has helped take the pressure off because she wants him to enjoy it, not just perfect it. She is very encouraging to him, which makes him want to keep working to improve."
