For all the advanced knowledge I have and years of teaching students of all kinds, my favorite is teaching beginners. I love seeing someone come in with no knowledge of music, and taking them from milestone to milestone. I love watching new musicians blossom.
I play, teach, and perform most frequently in classical, rock, blues, and pop genres.

I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught guitar multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA.
My students learn to have fun with music. Students can work on rhythms, melodies, improvisation, song writing, getting into and/or hanging on in a jam session, etc.

I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

Hi, my name is Chris I have been teaching guitar for over 20 years and have been playing guitar since I was 7 years old. I am an enthusiastic teacher and I love teaching for so many reasons. The way I teach is simple, I teach my students how to play correctly while having fun. He has a great disposition and we couldn't be more thrilled. Thanks Chris!!!

one of the kindest, most knowledgeable, accommodating, and encouraging instructors I have ever had
the privilege of studying with.
Instruction: Chris works at the level of his student. He doesn’t assume you have mastery in any skill and
works with you each week to build up a core set of basic skills. From an early point, Chris was able to
adapt to my level and show me fundamental skill building exercises.
Lesson Variety: Chris would teach different aspects to learning the guitar with each lesson. He would
supply any instrument or tool needed and would take the time to explain what each object does. At the
end of each lesson, I would feel confident in the material that was being taught, and felt that each
lesson was new and important. I’ve learned various rhythms, notes, styles of playing, and more.
Flexibility: Chris was very accommodating to my schedule. He was consistent and timely for each lesson,
and understanding when life circumstances would interfere. He works well at adapting to how you want
to learn, a key ingredient to being an effective instructor.
In summary, Chris was an excellent instructor, I learned a lot from his weekly lessons, and he is
just a straight-up nice guy. I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the guitar or
improve one’s skills.

I was a weekly student for Chris, and I have to say that our lessons together we're always a great time for the both of us. I practiced with Chris for about two years, and in that time I never once felt like I was under some sort of pressure to get prepared for the next lesson. The reason for that is because Chris is the kind of teacher that makes you want to get better. Every time he left me an assignment of some sort, whether it be practicing blues progressions to recording a solo part to a rythym track, I could never help myself from getting to work the second he stepped out my front door. Chris truly created an atmosphere for me that made it easy to learn, and I'm the kind of person who has a hard time learning. I seriously recommend Chris not only because he is a great teacher but a great friend as well!
I've been teaching and playing professionally in many countries as well as the US. I know how to see what the student needs to advance their playing. I offer expertise in several types of guitar playing from folk finger picking to blues, country and city styles as well as soul and funky grooves and how to practically apply what you learn both with bands and solo. I am passionate about music and love to convey that enthusiasm to my students as learning should be first and foremost fun and a joyful experience. Besides live lessons I also give 30,45 online lessons.

I took lessons previously and was OK with them, but found myself wandering and lacking a sense of ‘commitment’ to the teacher and to my studies. Dry.
I’m not a kid anymore and was looking for a teacher who could work with my adult enthusiasm, excitement, and I didn't want to be rooted to teaching me the pentatonic scales in all keys before we could get to some playing and having some fun, too... I was hoping for a teacher who could personalize his teaching skills, and for me, Jonathan came through with flying colors. He’s so much more than a “One Size Fits All” teacher; he’s a real person – reachable, able to identify my needs, my strengths and weaknesses, and takes this into full consideration during our lessons. He’s an experienced, talented teacher. Simple.
He’s a person that really knows his stuff from musical theory to the many styles of playing, i.e., blues, jazz, folk, country and even rock; he can play and more importantly – he can teach um all! I’m an aspiring singer/songwriter and in addition to helping me define those strange chords I’m playing, he inspires me to ‘grow on.’
Oh, and one more thing: If your lesson is an hour long and there’s something important happening, he won’t cut you off - he’ll take the extra time needed to get you to the end of ‘the measure,’ comfortably." Feb 2017 Rachel I.

Whether you are looking for a teacher on guitar, piano, bass, harmonica or drums, I highly recommend Jonathan Kalb as your teacher.
For over five years, I have been teaching guitar lessons. I have a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from the Crane School of Music. Whatever a student's goal may be, I will always help them achieve it.
Even if you have never held a guitar before, I will have you jamming by the end of our first lesson. I don't use note names, but instead teach you to improvise in every key using memorable, movable patterns on the fretboard. I’ll show you how to find the key of any given song so that you can begin playing along with your favorites in your free time using the patterns I’ve shown you. Getting better at guitar is all about spending time with the instrument; what you will learn in our lessons will provide you with ample material to practice by giving you the tools to make an infinite amount of great sounding music, even after just one lesson! After your fretting hand has become accustom to the neck of the guitar and your picking/strumming hand has developed the necessary coordination, we will build your chord vocabulary and begin experimenting with different rhythms.
I have a great deal of experience teaching complete beginners of all ages and find it extremely fulfilling to bring ...
Learning theory can be a turn off for some people in the early stages of guitar playing, but as soon as you express interest in understanding why and how the chords in your classic tunes sound so good together, I’m great at explaining to people with all different learning styles. Visual learners, especially, will greatly benefit from the fact that I am a left-handed player. When one righty tries to show another righty something on guitar, the student has to take the extra step of inverting the finger positions being shown to him/her by the teacher. With me, however, our guitars will align in a mirror image. The second you see me play something, it will be much easier to process what I am doing than if you had to flip it.
I have a great deal of experience teaching complete beginners of all ages and find it extremely fulfilling to bring someone who has never held a guitar before the incredible joy and liberation that comes with learning how to play along. Study with me, and you will connect on a much deeper level with the music that you have been listening to your whole life.

I have been composing, performing and teaching for over 20 years. In that time I have learned that each student learns in their own way and as such my lessons are designed for each particular student.
Whether they are young or old my students always get a personalized experience that is both educational and fun.
Many of my current students have been with me for years and I truly enjoy seeing how each of them has grown in that time.
My passion for music started when I was 10 years old and began taking lessons at that age and I haven't stopped since.
I have been a professional musician and songwriter for over 20 years and began teaching private students in Eastern Queens and Nassau County in 1996.
I also worked at Catalano Music from 1996-2017 where I gave lessons as well as handled NYSSMA related music and issues and am well experienced in guiding students who participate in NYSSMA to success.
All of my lessons are geared toward the needs and wants of the individual students and many of my students have been with me for years.
I look forward to the opportunity of helping my students achieve their goals and dreams.

I tried other teachers and yeah they taught me a few chords or a few songs and that’s great but I wanted to actually learn not only how to play but WHAT to play and WHY.
Of course he can teach songs and it’s always fun but his knowledge of theory and scales and all the different variances is what helped take my playing to a whole other level.
