Originally from Massachusetts, I have been teaching children and adults flute for over 20 years. I teach from the very beginner student to the very advanced and I have additional training in the Suzuki Method which is especially helpful for beginning young children. I am primarily a classical flute teacher with extensive experience playing in various classical music settings.

My approach is friendly and patient. As I get to know my students, I can better guide them to accomplish the goal of learning flute but, in the process, I never lose sight o the person whom I am teaching. It has to be a pleasant experience as well as challenging. I have learned throughout the years when to relax my expectations of perfection and when to intensify them. I am looking for a good attitude in my students. My students come to me trying their best during
the lesson time and also making time in their schedules to practice. Every student is different and has different goals. I consider the differences while I am teaching them. My younger students don't usually know how serious they are about the instrument. For them especially, it has to be fun and interesting. I make every effort to combine my students in small chamber music groups for recitals. Nearly all of my students participate in regular studio recitals with a pianist provided to accompany them.

Our son attended a neighborhood concert and was struck with the idea that he’d like to learn to play the flute. We knew absolutely nothing about flutes at that time, but we consider ourselves so, so fortunate that Frannie came to us by recommendation.

Frannie is fun and has a great sense of humor. She is endlessly patient and relaxed, but also firm when she needs to be. She always keeps the music interesting for him – for example, after a period of working hard on the pieces in the Suzuki Method repertoire, she encourages him to mix it up and play some things just for fun, like the popular themes to Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Our son, now 9, has been studying with Frannie for almost a year now, and I cannot believe how much he has grown and improved in such a short amount of time. Frannie inspires him to play his very best; he works hard to emulate her gorgeous tone. He absolutely loves his weekly lessons, he looks forward to her student recitals, and he is motivated to practice every day.

It is a beautiful thing to watch your child fall in love with making music, and we credit this to Frannie. She has our highest recommendation.

I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.

I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough.

My daughter Coco studied with Frances for a number of years. Without question Francis was the best music teacher Coco ever had, and she's had quite a few.
Francis is generous, creative, and inspiring to work with, she has the perfect balance of qualities that a music student needs. She's highly motivating and makes demands of her students which stretch them to achieve their full potential, yet she never pushes past their limits; Coco never felt stressed by her practice but always wanted to fulfill the expectation of excellence which Francis instilled in her. In the beginning, I focus on the basics - with the flute stance, breathing, tonguing, hand position, and rhythm. For the guitar, relaxed fret grip, relaxed hand positions, strumming and picking techniques, and rhythm.

As we progress, I build upon these basics - Scales, Triads, Songs or Song Shells, more involved techniques - various tonguing abiltiies, further development of strumming and picking techniques - use of the capo.

Finally, I believe in the ability to demonstrate your knowledge, wherever it develops, so encourage students to participate in an arts celebration two times a year (not mandatory, just a recommendation). Here we will cover performance etiquette and playing through nerves and so on.

Personable, reliable and relates well to my seven-year-old daughter who is just starting piano lessons. Strikes a good balance between teaching then reinforcing fundamentals (such as hand position and posture) and keeping the sessions low stress and engaging. Lesson rate at the upper end of the price range, but we are willing to continue with Janelle because she seems to fit our and our daughter's needs nicely. Would strongly recommend her.

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. *** Lesson Details ***
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. Therefore, it is my job as the instructor to inspire them to practice and benefit from each and every lesson. Whether it be vocal or piano instruction, each lesson consists of fun warm-ups, interesting technical exercises, and repertoire of all sorts. What the student learns in 3-6 months depends upon the motivation of the student as well as my ability to teach what the student needs to know in order to achieve their goals as a pianist and/or vocalist. Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle C method for players of all levels. Those who are more advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play music that they enjoy.

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

Though my time as a student with Dr. Dan was short, it was very valuable. Even though the lessons were about singing, it helped me gain a general confidence in myself regarding posture, and using a loud voice. He has given a number of exercises to develop my breathing, vibrato, tone, and lower registers to use on my own. Dr. Dan is a great teacher who makes the atomsphere of the lessons very friendly and I would highly recommend him!

Celeste is an amazing teacher. She's extremely knowledgeable in singing and in teaching singing as well. She makes me feel really comfortable (singing is not my strong suit) and knows exactly what to do to help me improv. Celeste listens to what it is I am hoping to achieve and pushes me to do so. Celeste is an amazing voice instructor! She truly makes you feel comfortable the minute you meet her and she has so much knowledge about vocal technique and is very helpful in building your performance and audition materials!

She is also extremely patient with her students. She is very eager for her students to succeed and will take all the time in the world until you are comfortable and understand what she is trying to explain. A recent transplant to the Park Slope area, I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to receiving my master's degree in composition from Mannes (The New School), I was the lead guitarist in the indie rock band Annuals. One of my main goals is to foster a sense of musical understanding with every student so that they may learn to combine technical, theoretical, and aural skills into a unified whole.

Most students want to learn to play songs they know and love. To that end, I get students playing the music they want to play right from the beginning, often through personally crafted arrangements of songs/pieces of the student's choosing, specifically tailored to their current skill level. This way, technical and theoretical skills are learned through direct experience with actual music, and only very rarely through rote exercise.

For more advanced players, I offer an array of strategies designed to take your playing to the next level. I find that the most common shortcomings of advanced players are conceptual. The technical skills are there but the level of conceptual and theoretical understanding has hit a wall. Many players find themselves playing the same chord shapes, melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions over and over again. I've had much success over the years in getting advanced students out of this rut and helping open up new pathways for exploration in both improvisation and composition.

I've been playing off and on for 15 years and am mostly self taught. I knew what I wanted to learn but was having trouble figuring it out on my own. In the first lesson Ken was able to zero in on what I want to learn and the best way to go about it. In three lessons I feel that I understand the guitar so much more than I have in the past 15 years of playing. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also in a "feel" sense. On my own I could learn all the scales, chords, and songs I wanted, but Ken has helped me to make sense of everything and use these skills to become a better player all around.

Ken is an incredibly talented musician and teacher and I would recommend him to anyone. He tailors his lessons to meet the individual goals of his students. If I wasn't understanding something, he knew how to explain it in a different way until I understood. He also taught me some techniques for figuring out songs on my own which I really appreciate since I am about move out of NYC. However, if I wasn't leaving I would still be taking lessons with him!

I took from Kenny when I was in middle school/early high school and he truly is the one who made me want to start writing songs. He's beyond talented, inspirational, and has a great smile to boot!
